Running Out Of Angels

Post by Branst »

Is there a studio version of this song available anywhere? Not the demo from This Year's Model bonus tracks.

Probably somewhere in Elvis' vaults. It'll show up on the 15th reissue (which we'll all still be buying!).

Personally it's a track I'm happy to skip. Even Elvis isn't keen on it. He said somewhere along the line that it sounded like it was being made up as he went along and probably was.

i have heard a number of versions of 'running out of angels'.
i like the one where he's got to start over.

also, i liked the one on the king of americana, if i am not mistaken.

i find the whole song lyrics intriguing in a number of different ways. it is one of the few songs that actually changes meaning for me. i think it's cos i am pig headed.

and the chorus as he leads out of the song is so... so....
oh, i useta be disgusted
now i try to be amused

Damn, I feel embarrased for not catching that one!

I think he's refering to "Running Out Of Fools" which is featured as a piano demo on King Of Americana and it's also on Blood & Chocolate and Kojak Variety.

The only one I've ever heard is on TYM reissues. I happen to think it's a smashing song, and I wish there was a studio version out there with Steve, Pete, and Bruce. The middle section is fantastic.

"All the lies upon the tongues of all the girls upon the rails, would ruin any man who moved too soon. All excpet the one who seems to know more than she tells. You know she looks just like an angel but she sings so out of tune."
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

That part you are referring to noise is especially "smashing". I really can't understand why, even though he might not have thought that the song succeeded as a whole, he didn't at least rip that part out for use in another song. That melody could pretty much stand on it's own as the bedrock for a great song. Oh well.

You don't have to be lucky

This song belongs on the "How HE sings" thread. There's an urgency to it that almost sounds like he's struggling to put the words together as he sings them. That's why the recording "error" works so well on this track.

I like the song, too, and I think it would be cool if Elvis revisited it.

It sounds as if it can go on and on and still be interesting, but it sounds like something familiar... some tune on an old tv show or something (strangely reminds me of up Up Up And Away) ... just can't place it.
