lyrics we LOVE

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

lyrics we LOVE

Post by girl out of time »

ok...we could think of lots of lyrics we like but the 1 rule for this topic is to pick only one........so think hard!!!!!!!
(you can highlight your favourite verses if you want)

my choice.....springsteen´s jungleland

The rangers had a homecoming in Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine over the Jersey state line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The Rat pulls into town rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance and disappear down Flamingo Lane

Well the Maximum Lawman run down Flamingo chasing the Rat and the barefoot
girl
And the kids round here look just live like shadows always quiet, holding hands
From the churches to the jails tonight all is silence in the world
As we take our stand down in Jungleland

The midnight gang's assembled and picked a rendezvous for the night
They'll meet `neath that giant Exxon sign that brings this fair city light
Man there's an opera out on the Turnpike
There's a ballet being fought out in the alley
Until the local cops, Cherry Tops, rips this holy night
The street's alive as secret debts are paid
Contacts made, they vanished unseen
Kids flash guitars just like switch-blades hustling for the record machine
The hungry and the hunted explode into rock'n'roll bands
That face off against each other out in the street down in Jungleland

In the parking lot the visionaries dress in the latest rage
Inside the backstreet girls are dancing to the records that the D.J. plays
Lonely-hearted lovers struggle in dark corners
Desperate as the night moves on, just a look and a whisper, and they're gone

Beneath the city two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender in a bedroom locked
In whispers of soft refusal and then surrender in the tunnels uptown
The Rat's own dream guns him down as shots echo down them hallways in the
night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light

Outside the street's on fire in a real death waltz
Between flesh and what's fantasy and the poets down here
Don't write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of a knife they reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand but they wind up wounded, not even dead
Tonight in Jungleland

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

.......just poetry
...the promise of indulgence in my confidential voice approached inmortal danger but you´ll never know how close....

this is where i'm at tonight

leonard cohen-hallelujah (this is the version john cale sings, i'm really not too clear about wether he rewrote parts or wether cohen wrote it like this for him.)

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Baby I've been here before, I know this room
I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the Marble Arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
I remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above, all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who out drew you
And it's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
-it takes a long time but god dies too/but not before he sticks it to you-

When you're back in your old neighborhood
The cigarettes taste so good
But you're so misunderstood
You're so misunderstood

There's something there that you can't find
Honest when you're tellin' a lie
You hurt her but you don't know why
You love her but you don't know why

Short on long term goals
There's a party there that we oughtta go to
Do you still love rock and roll?
Do you still love rock and roll?

It's only a quarter to three
Reflecting off your C.D.
You're looking at a picture of me
You're staring at a picture of me

Take the guitar player for a ride
He ain't never been satisfied
He thinks he owes some kind of debt
Be years before he gets over it

There's a fortune inside your head
All you touch turns to lead
You think you might just crawl back in bed
The fortune inside your head

You know you're just a mama's boy
Positively unemployed
So misunderstood
So misunderstood

I know you gotta God shaped hole
Leanin' out your soul
So misunderstood
So misunderstood
So misunderstood
So misunderstood

I'd like to thank you all for nothin'
I'd like to thank you all for nothin' at all
I'd like to thank you all for nothin'
Nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' at all
Nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' at all

Silver shone the rooftops, I heard the words 'You will',
And realized that in your eyes, the force of love could kill.
So go and get your wages, get what you deserve,
When hope held out of its hands today, you laughed and turned and fled.

Chorus:
Release, 'cos I wanted the world, and all I could get to
Was a gun or a girl.
Release, now I've thrown them away
I'm here and I'm hungry and I hope I can stay.

The loch is overflowing, the sun has shed its light
And all that's left to warm your breast's the wine we stole tonight.
Bottle merchants both of us, overdosed on Keats, we smashed them all
And watched them fall like magic in the streets.

Standing in our new boots, we've lost the urge to hide,
We left it with the souvenirs that forced us to decide.
How we'd storm the palace, meet me at the gates,
There's plenty bread and water here for anyone who waits.

But you can't remember where you squandered your hope
A fistful of dollars and a fistful of dope,
With your hands in your hair and your hair in your face,
You'd better summon your soul because we're leaving this place,
With a red, red flag for a souvenir.
"But they can't hold a candle to the reciprical war crimes which have plagued our policy of foriegn affairs."

Jackson was being elusive there, and if you're wondering, that was teenage wunderkind Roddy Fram in the Aztec Camera days, written when still a teenager. I think the song was Release, but not even sure. I had it on tape from a BBC session. I guess it was on the first LP, which I never bought.

Love this thread cos it's already exhibiting classics. I think Hallelujah is just a masterpiece.

I'm in a Morrissey mood (got 'Your Arsenal' today, any fans of that out there?), and though it's a bit maudlin for a day of sunny celebration, I have to post this, cos the keyboard at the end of 'Tomorrow' that closes the above is a direct ref back to it, and it's such a great song:

Asleep (by The Smiths)

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go
There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Bye bye.

C-punk, I love that song, but didn't know who wrote it. only version I've heard is on that Shrek soundtrack I keep referring to...Rufus Wainwright sings it on that.
Like me, the "g" is silent.

Mood...gotta love the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah as well (or at least I do).
A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. Do you think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a fuckin' cross? It's kind of like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on.

this is one of my faves--I hope you've all heard it.

everything is cool
everything's okay
why just before last christmas
my baby went away
across the sea to an island
while the bridges brightly burn
so far away from my land
the valley of the unconcerned
I was walking down the road, man
just looking at my shoes
when God sent me an angel
just to chase away my blues
I saw a hundred thousand blackbirds
just flying thru the sky
and they seemed to form a teardrop
from a black haired angel's eye
that tear fell all around me
and it washed my sins away
now everything is cool
everything's okay

everything is cool
everything's okay
why just before last christmas
my baby went away
and I find it real surprising
for myself to hear me say
that everything is cool
everything's okay.

John Prine, Everything is Cool
Like me, the "g" is silent.

I keep meaning to post something here, cause it's a great thread. ANd as I listened to this Aimee Mann song, IT'S NOT SAFE, I thought it'd be a good one to share. Good for those self-indulgently sad moods, not that I'd know anything about THAT...

********

It is not safe
All you want to do is something good
So get ready to be ridiculed and misunderstood
'Cause don't you know that you're a fucking freak in this world
In which everybody's willing to choose swine over pearls
And maybe everything is all for nothing
Still you'd better keep it to yourself
'Cause God knows it's not safe with anybody else
You can take your own advice and try again
But a thousand compromises don't add up to a win
And they'd be happy if you'd only cover your tracks
But the trail of crumbs you've left won't help you find your way back
So maybe everything is all for nothing
Still you'd better keep it to yourself
'Cause God knows it's not safe with anybody else
God knows it's not safe with anybody else
You can play along, but you'll just end up wrong somehow, won't you
But you're the idiot who keeps believing in luck
And you just can't get it through your head that no one else gives a fuck
So maybe everything is all for nothing
Still you'd better keep it to yourself
'Cause God knows it's not safe with anybody else
God knows it's not safe with anybody else
God knows it's not safe with anybody else
It's not safe with anybody else
God knows it's not safe with anybody els

Okay, I'm cheating, but here's another good Aimee Mann one, from THE MOTH (props to Virginia Woolf)...

The moth don't care when he sees the flame
he might get burned but he's in the game
and once he's in he can't go back, and
beat his wings 'til he burns them black
no the moth don't care when he sees the flame
no the moth don't care when he sees the flame

the moth don't care if the flame is real
cuz flame and moth got a sweetheart deal
and nothing fuels a good flirtation
like need and anger and desperation
no the moth don't care if the flame is real
no the moth don't care if the flame is real

My current favorite from the new Frank Black CD to be released in September -

MASSIF CENTRAL

I've no number if you want to call Massif Central
there's an ivy crawling on my gate, I stay up late
sleep in gardens where I play my loop where I lay my loop
Now the clock is stopping faithfully - she's taking me

Monsieur's at nine, that is my promise, have some wine
please don't go away
Madame's at nine, baby honest, have some wine
please don't turn away

I thought I'd take a chance and forget about the States
yeah, I thought I'd gravitate to the hills of Central France
so I left the world below and into the rocks I climbed
now I'm living in the cold, but I'm looking for the sign

That's the sign of her love behavior
that's the sign that I'm looking for

And I've seen you at the movies, and I've seen you at the store
and if I stare a little more, well that's because you move me
And I can see it in your eyes and I can hear it when you talk
darling, when I see you walk, you seem so very nice

That's the sign of her love behavior
Yeah, that's the sign that I'm looking for

It sure is cold here in the summer and I haven't got her number
but the sky is very bright and the sun is very clear
and I can smell it in the wind and I guess that it's the time
and I saw the way you grinned, yeah you were giving me the sign

That's the sign of your love behavior,
that's the sign that I'm looking for

But, Tallulah, how can you be quoting the lyrics from an LP that ain't out for 2 months? That's cheating. Frank is playing in Cambridge (the Englissh version) in October, you know.

I was standing next to a guy in HMV the other day who was buying an FB CD, and the guy on the till was saying he couldn't wait to see him live here - proof that everyone loves Frank these days.

Where are those Aimee songs from, oh Mug? Am still learning.

i love aimee's older stuff. having a hard time getting into Lost In Space. must try putting it on with headphones.

right now i'm listening to Cherry Marmalade by Kay Hanley. still boppy with a little bit of fire and vinegar. i have hopes for seeing her tonight (@ The Harp, near North Station, Boston), but might have to bail for the lure of home.

I can post not yet released lyrics cause I am a cheater, Otis. And he has played that song live a few times (I have seen it once - ha!) so it is not really CHEATING. :D Yes, I did hear about Cambridge. Today a lovely thistle gal got me a ticket to the London FB show (10/15).

The Aimee Mann lyrics are IT'S NOT SAFE from I'm With Stupid
and THE MOTH from Lost in Space, if I can deem to answer for Ms. Mug.

Thank you, dear Tallulah Chicken. You can always be my spokesposter.

(It's really she who got me into Ms. Mann. And I who got her into FB-- though she has FAR surpassed me in expertise of that particular genius!)

WHATEVER is actually my least favorite Aimee Mann. What made you get that one??

Here's another good song by her off of LOST IN SPACE that I love -

INVISIBLE INK
There comes a time when you swim or sink
So I jumped in the drink
'Cause I couldn't make myself clear
Maybe I wrote in invisible ink
Oh I've tried to think
How I could've made it appear

But another illustration
Is wasted cuz the results are the same
I feel like a ghost who's trying
To move your hands over some Ouija board
In the hopes I can spell out my name

But some take from magic at first glance
Is just sleight of hand
Depending how much you believe
Something gets lost when you translate
It's hard to keep straight
Perspective is everything

And I know now which is which
And what angle I oughta look at it from
I suppose I should be happy to be misread
Better be that than some of the other things I have become

But nobody wants to hear this tale
The plot is cliche - the jokes are stale
And baby we've all heard it all before
Oh I could get specific but
Nobody needs a catalog.
With details of love I can't sell anymore

And aside from that,
This chain of reaction, baby, is losing a link
Thought I'd hope you'd know what I tried to tell you
and if you don't
I could draw you a picture in invisible ink

But nobody wants to hear this tale
The plot is cliche - the jokes are stale
And baby we've all heard it all before
Oh I could get specific but
Nobody needs a catalog.
With details of love I can't sell anymore

£5 in the ongoing HMV sale! Great that it's your least favourite, cos I can't wait to hear the rest! Which is your fave, though? Bachelor No. 2? That's the one I really want to get, but it's more fun to start with the lesser, enjoy that and move onto the greater. I love the songs off Magnolia too. How about a ranking of all her LPs? Lost In Space seems less favoured among the Aimee fans, where would that figure?
