the first LP i bought was The Beatles - Rarities. Why Rarities? it was new? it was on sale? probably for the german language versions on it, so i could take it to German class and impress the teacher. I became a Beatlemaniac, that lasted thruout high school. I mean, I still love the Fab Four, but i can no longer tell you what was the flip of any random single release.
i had a small stack of 45's, starting when i was 5 or 6. I expect I got them from the parents, i was the only one who played them.
i used to rock out (at age 6 or so) to The Who Who Song by Jackie Wilson. I think the A-side was Higher & Higher, but the B-side is the one i really cared about.
I grew up listening to country music. My folks didn't 'do' rock & roll. don't know where the Jackie Wilson came from.

My mum gave me a record player for my 6th birthday in 72. She also gave me a box of vinyl which would be worth a fortune if I still had it. i loved all that 50s/60s British R&R - espe Billy Fury.
The first recordd I bought were Give a Little Love by the Bay City Rollers and Daydreamer by David Cassidy.

I don't know for certain if this is the first record I ever bought with my own money, but I think it was Prince Around the World In A Day. It was on cassette. But I don't remember how I got the money, whether it was allowance money or what. I don't remember buying it, only having it. And my parents would never have bought me a Prince record. So I'm not sure.
The first record I remember going into as store to buy was The Beatles Rubber Soul. Iwas in high school and had just gotten a job. I was a huge Beatles fan, having heard their records in my brother's room for years. I got a check every week for about $30, and I walked two shops down to the record store as soon as I cashed my paycheck every week and bought 3 albums. I bought every Beatles release on vinyl in the course of that summer, along with Spike, A Paul Kelly & the Messengers album and Peter Gabriel Passion.

Goody2Shoes, NO WAY!Goody2Shoes wrote: 45: Elton John 'Benny and The Jets', I think. My mom commenced a first-class rant when she thought the line was "She's got electric boobs", started yelling about the dissolution of civilized society, and that a 10-year-old could get hold of such pornography portended the end of the world. She snatched the record off the player, and broke it in half in very dramatic fashion. She's very emotional, my mom.
MY MOTHER DID THAT EXACT SAME THING!! Only it was Elton John/ The Bitch Is Back. That is so funny!
She also managed to destroy Hair of the Dog/Nazareth. (I believe the chorus was "...now you're messing with a son of a bitch...")
Needless to say, my parents didn't appreciate my taste in music.
I'm not angry anymore....

I'd listen to my brother's heavy metal records when I was about 12 -- Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest... it was fascinating stuff at the time.
The first one I bought for myself was ZZ Top - Eliminator.
Sweet Pear, I think you mean Aerosmith's self-titled debut, which featured Dream On. That's a great record, almost as good as Get Your Wings.

First single: Brown Sauce "I Just Wanna Be A Winner"
...anyone remember this? There's a prize for anyone who can remember the members of Brown Sauce.
First Proper Album: Billy Joel, "An Innocent Man", although I had got the Mary Poppins soundtrack and one or two gammy hit compilations beforehand.

My first single was "Smokin' In The Boys Room" - Brownsville Station
two others around the same time were "Rock On" by David Essex and "Clap For The Wolfman" by the Guess Who
First album I bought was also the "American Graffiti" soundtrack. I had to pull a ton of weeds in the yard to earn the $8 for the double LP at K-Mart or the Gov-Mart Bizzare (anyone from Tacoma?)

Oh you are taking me back. I had the BIGGEST crush on David Essex!Boy With A Problem wrote:My first single was "Smokin' In The Boys Room" - Brownsville Station

To quote a phrase from my son....he was new hottness.
I'm not angry anymore....
My Mom says my first word was 'siccy!', meaning music, but she has a better imagination than memory sometimes. I do know I requested a record of John Phillips Sousa marches on an annoyingly regular basis as a toddler, and would march around the living room. Good little facist!!
I can't for the life of me recall my first single; I'm sure it was something appalling. Mostly I was a radio freak, and didn't go anywhere without my littl Panasonic transistor radio and single earphone.
I had two older sibs, and a pretty cool Dad (into the Beatles and so on, not bad for a 40-yr-old in 1964) so there was a lot of stuff around, a totally weird mix of show music, classical, odd bits of mainstream jazz and pop. I got a few Monkees records as presents from my parents-- HEADQUARTERS, and THE BIRDS, THE BEES AND THE MONKEES (and my sister had the others). But I think the first LP I bought with my own money, which would've been a few yeas later, was Elton's GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD.
Can you tell I'm procrastinating...?

Boy With a Problem, I also had "Smokin' in The Boys' Room"!
It was a freebie that came with a kids' record player that I was given for Christmas or a birthday. I don't know how that escaped my mom's radar. She would NEVER had let me have it had she heard it. It also came with a copy of "Basketball Jones". I think that's Cheech and Chong, no?
Living a parallel childhood with Boy With A Problem.... You're not the middle of five children, are you?!

The song my mother wouldn't let us listen to was "Squeeze Box" by the Who.I can't understand why, it's about a neighborhood mom who plays the accoridan, right?
