Mine just came from Amazon. Just $9.99 USD. I'm opening it now!!!
Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
Elvis is now no 3 on Amazon's US chart, no 4 in Canada and... 40 in the UK.
Elvis on top of Diana in Canada shock! It won't last long.

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
I love Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane. But, i wish Elvis had included the wonderful 3 tracks left off of the album.
I have included them in my own version, with the following track listing:
1 Down Among the Wines and Spirits
2 Complicated Shadows
3 I Felt the Chill Before the Winter Came
4 My All Time Doll
5 Hidden Shame
6 She Handed Me a Mirror
7 I Dreamed of My Old Lover
8 How Deep Is the Red
9 Dirty Rotten Shame
10 She Was No Good
11 Sulphur to Sugarcane
12 Femme Fatale
13 Red Cotton
14 What Lewis Did Last
15 The Crooked Line
16 Changing Partners

I'm not yet at 100% sold on the music for Changing Partners, although I do like it quite a lot. Sounds very old school countryish. The lyrics, however, I could just die for. How lovely.
Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
What's up with the song credited to Lou Reed on the new album, Femme Fetale? I don't see it anywhere on the new album and yet there's a credit to it in the acknowledgements.

"Femme Fatale" is on the vinyl version of Secret, Profane & Sugarcane along with the EC original composition "What Lewis Did Last."shendley wrote:What's up with the song credited to Lou Reed on the new album, Femme Fetale? "Dirty Rotten Shame" is the b-side of the limited-edition 7" single of the new "Complicated Shadows."
I've had you so many times but somehow I want more.
Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
I can imagine that's a frustrating typo for the casual listener who just owns the CD and thinks they're somehow missing one of the tracks!
Or maybe it just reads like trivia: "Did you know that the song 'Femme Fatale' was written by Lou Reed?"
FYI, if you wanna hear it, iTunes has it for a dollar. It sounds basically like the version he performed on Spectacle, which you can see on YouTube:

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
Thanks for the info about Femme fetale. I'm surprised, though, that he was able to get three more songs on a vinyl record. The CD is already about 50 minutes long and most of my vinyl records come in at about 25 or so minutes a side (though I've got a couple of Miles Davis records clocking in close to 30 minutes a side).
Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
Oh, one more thing. I found What Lewis did Last on the mp3 version of the album on Amazon for $.99.

Hi
I'm loving Secret etc , but grieving for the loss of those missing tracks on the CD
I enquired at HMV and was advised that they would import the LP for £35 which seemed a bit steep in these cash strapped credit crunching times.
The (world famous) Probe Records in Liverpool - vinyl specialists - said that they'd be able to undercut HMV but couldn't say by how much or when they'd have a copy in the store! The don't stock the CD 'cos they can't compete with the chains...
So HMV got my £9.99 on Monday. 3 days in and the sleeve is already showing signs of falling apart.
Wonderful sound on Femme Fatale from Spectacle, apart from Steve who was playing in the band? Are these the Sugarcanes ?
Keep smilin'

If this information proves correct and the album enters the Billboard chart inside the top 20 it will be Elvis' highest US chart position since Get Happy in 1980.

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
Has anyone actually gotten their hands on a copy of the LP yet? I looked in a few shops here in NYC, but no sign of it yet...
I have to say that the more I listen to this album, the more I love it. Even songs that I was just so-so on initially, like "Down Among The Wines and Spirits", are songs I'm wanting to listen to over and over. I actually find that particular song sort of sneaks up on you-- it's really catchy, I can't get it out of my head!
"The Crooked Line" is another one-- when I first heard it, I thought "oh, that's nice-- but I don't love it." Now, it's really, really growing on me. I like the way it kind of musically quotes "Ring Of Fire" at the beginning. Wasn't this one written for the movie Walk The Line? Thematically, it's really appropriate for that movie...
Jim Lauderdale is a real MVP on this record. I need to go out and get some of his records. His harmonies on "I Dreamed Of My Old Lover Last Night" really complete that song.

Go with iTunes, no? Or some illegal download source. £35 is 'avin' a larf.Top balcony wrote:I'm loving Secret etc , but grieving for the loss of those missing tracks on the CD
I totally love the sound of the record, beautifully played and recorded, thick with warmth and soul, but the songs so far ain't grabbing me hugely. Maybe a few listens will change that. I like the first three a lot. And 'Crooked Line' is yummy. Suspect it will be more favoured than Momofuku (can't remember when I last felt like listening to that), but probably less than The Delivery Man. Still seems like a good choice of project to have gone for, though. He should do more things with his brother.

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
Have had the chance to listen to this album pretty much completely over the last three days-picked it up for the nice price of $9.98. I cannot say I share your growing enthusiasm for the material. It is professionally played, the vibrato is tamed, but it is strangely soulless. It is almost a genre album for the sake of doing a genre album. "Oh! Americana or Roots albums are selling today-let's do one." I do like the re working of " Complicated Shadows", the conceit of "Hidden Shame" and, for what it is, the simple pleasure of his statement of love to his spouse in "Changing Partners", but over all I really am underwhelmed by this album. I will take it out on occasion and give it a spin but it will not get the play that " King of America" or "Almost Blue" continuously get on my play list.

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
I like the album (CD only at mo - mine arrived only yesterday). I - like a few others - forgot to check out the Martian version extra tracks in advance - silly us.
I see that in UK one - as mentioned elsewhere (not on new free official Costello site) - can buy another version of 'Femme fatale' from iTunes, whereas in USA one can buy another version of 'What Lewis did last' from amazon.com (can't buy it in UK).
CD is a tight fit in cardboard sleeve, so mine lives in plastic wallet when not in Naim CDP.
Even though most of us have heard versions of most of these 13-15 songs before, I like the album and agree that I am well more likely to play it over the years than Momo....
It also sounds nice on Spotify.

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
It's a good album, but I can't help but feel that it's a side project/indulgence, like North or Painted From Memory; something Elvis has wanted to do for a while, and is now getting to do.
Having known of 11 of the 13 songs, the ones I feel the most enthusiasm over are the newer ones: 'Wine & Spirits', 'I Felt The Chill', 'The Crooked Line', and 'Sulphur to Sugarcane', especially the last two. In fact, if 'Crooked Line' had been promoted as the lead single, it would have gotten no complaints from me; 'Complicated Shadows' has not moved me in the same way as the Attractions' version did, because it's just taken too quickly and all of the menace is gone from it.
Of the Secret songs, 'She Was No Good' is the standout, and 'I Dreamed Of My Old Lover' (not a Secret song, I know) is another beauty, but having been somewhat familiar with the other songs already, they don't really do anything for me. 'She Handed Me A Mirror', in particular, seems labored.
It's beautifully performed and produced, and the musicians are unobtrusive (though Jim Lauderdale's "harmony" vocals are very strange to hear for the first time; I liked how John Foyle put it, that it sounds like someone singing along at a concert, but only on particular lines). I can't help but feel that the version of 'Femme Fatale' might be the most enjoyable performance here, though, because the band really sound like they're having a blast; elsewhere on SP&SC, they're just kinda ... there.
I like the album, but it hasn't instantly hit me the way Momofuku did, and I do like bluegrass music. (Spent a whole week listening to some on Pandora, and A Mighty Wind is one of my favorite movies/soundtracks!) I like the idea that this is a "back porch album" (another description from someone elsewhere on the site), something you can listen to in the background, but that's not really how I like my EC. I think what would have been interesting would have been to see how the Imposters would have handled this album, and it might have been given a little bit more of an edge; or even if it had been a Coward Brothers album. As it is, it's pleasant and I like it well enough, but I don't love it.

Re: EC to release Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
I've listened to it 3 or 4 times and it's growing on me, but I can't see it being an album in years to come I'll think I must listen to that. Certainly not as immediate as Momofuku was. It does remind me of North in the fact that it all sounds very similar at first listen and took a lot of getting used to.
I find a couple of the songs seem a bit too long and others just seem to end when you don't expect it.
I could be wrong of course and in a couple of weeks I find it's a masterpiece.
But that's the glory of elvis if you dont like this one there will be an another around soon you might like.
Great to see it looks like it's doing well in the US perhaps it can raise the profile back here in blighty cant say I've heard it getting an airplay over here.

I have listened a couple time through now. Not the impact of Momofuku for sure. First reactions are underwhelming. It is a very pretty record. After hearing Hidden Shame and Complicated Shadows a couple hundred times each, these versions don't do much for me.
She Handed Me A Mirror sounds like EC is trying to invent new notes, between sharps, flats and naturals.
...Wines and Spirits and I Dreamed... are growers. I like the continued story line of Geraldine from The Delivery man.
All in all not bad. I want to know how it will translate during the tour, and look forward to upcoming setlists.

"She Handed Me a Mirror" is "Broken" bad. Tuneless. Sounds like a sketch. Should have cut this one from the album.
"I Felt the Chill" my favorite so far.
I don't suspect I'll be returning to side 2 often to revisit its charms.

I'm liking it okay, but it's no KOA. It's not nearly diverse enough to be KOA. Or long enough. But I don't hate it.
