Elvis sings on soundtrack "The Invention of Lying"

Elvis sings a song on the soundtrack of the new Ricky Gervais movie "The Invention of Lying".

(...)
SOUNDS: The tone of the film seems to lament the idea of lying, so the score is loaded with dinky piano plucking or sappy strings that are far too sentimental. The film’s soundtrack loses its chance to be great, (what a great opportunity to hear “Honesty” by Billy Joel!), despite showing promise with a song performed by Elvis Costello and “Mr. Blue Sky” by Electric Light Orchestra, which seems to be heard in every other modern movie.
Score: 6

Just saw this last night. Good fun, even if it doesn't live up to the brilliance of The Office or Extras. Some great cameo appearances from John Hodgman, Stephen Merchant, Shaun Williamson, Ed Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman, among others.

Elvis indeed appears on the soundtrack, covering Cat Stevens' "Sitting" during a pivotal moment early in the film where the main character Mark Bellison tells the world's first lie.
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Speaking of Ricky Gervais.....Did anyone else see him on Jimmy Kimmel? I'm looking forward to the animated series he is doing with Stephen and Karl P.

I just watched it today and was surprised by EC's contribution to the soundtrack, it took me a few seconds to figure out that it was him. I liked the song, haven't heard the Cat Stevens version.

The movie was ok. The heartfelt moments tend to get a little too sappy but the part where Gervais' character makes up religion is priceless.

October 1972

Oh i'm on my way, i know i am, somewhere not so far
From here
All i know is all i feel right now, i feel the power growing
In my hair
Sitting on my own not by myself, everybody's here with me
I don't need to touch your face to know, and i don't need to
Use my eyes to see
I keep on wondering if i sleep too long, will i always wake
Up the same (or so)?
And keep on wondering if i sleep too long, will i even wake up
Again or something
Oh i'm on my way i know i am, but times there were when
I thought not
Bleeding half my soul in bad company, i thank the moon i
Had the strength to stop
I'm not making love to anyone's wishes, only for that light i see
'cause when i'm dead and lowered low in my grave, that's gonna
Be the only thing that's left of me
And if i make it to the waterside, will i even find me a boat
(or so)?
And if i make it to the waterside, i'll be sure to write you
Not or something
Oh i'm on my way, i know i am, somewhere not so far
From here
All i know is all i feel right now, i feel the power growing
In my hair
Oh life is like a maze of doors and they all open from the
Side you're on
Just keep on pushing hard boy, try as you may
You're going to wind up where you started from
You're going to wind up where you started from

I was hoping that the soundtrack would be on iTunes so I could buy the Costello track, but it's not there, and there doesn't seem to be any information about a planned CD release. I wonder why they would have Elvis record a song that would only be available in a montage in the film and not available anywhere else...

...bit like Bob Dylan doing a bit of 'Amazing Grace' in 'Masked And Anonymous' film ... (otherwise unavailable, even on film soundtrack CD).

So we will buy the re-release of the related album later of course

From Anthony Lane's rather scathing review in the current New Yorker...

..."The movie is no easier on the eye, or the ear, than its whining hero. Even the non-office scenes have a strip-lit look—an unconscious homage, you might say, to the scene of Gervais’s first triumph—and, as for the soundtrack, it’s like being haunted by the ghost of Easy Listening Past. Supertramp and the Electric Light Orchestra are one thing, but Donovan: there’s no excuse. And what really galls is not the songs themselves but the greasy way in which they are wrapped around crucial passages of action, to muffle any awkward transitions; thus, once Mark has armed himself with white lies, he strolls off to reassure all the other miserable folk we have encountered so far—old-timers, bums on the street, a bickering couple—with a smile and a word in their ears. But what word? We can’t tell, because Elvis Costello is busy belting out “Sitting” by the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens."

From listserv-

Here's a low-fi mp3 pulled from the film. The first 20 seconds
includes a bit of dialog, an elevator door closing and various street
noises.

This version fades in after the dialogue:
