I think it sounds like "were." But http://www.elviscotello.info disagrees with me. So I submit.

I often think when he sings " Put " , it sounds like " Pooed "

There's a couple I've noticed, but the only one I can think of at the minute is...

EC is kind of affecting an American accent which makes me suspect that if he were singing 'were' there would be a far more obvious 'w' sound; I hear 'are'. The Rhino notes also say 'are'.
