Unloved Songs - Volumes 1 & 2
I've had the pleasure of hearing this bootleg recently.
It is a 2 disc affair and has three completely unreleased songs on it.
The first disc is, my guess would be, recorded around 1978. It features the Attractions except the solo tracks (obviously!) and the track listing is
Really Mystified (version 1)
The Price Of Love
I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (version 1)
I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (version 2)
Stranger In The House (version 1)
Call On Me (Unreleased - it has the tune for Moods For Moderns but also has some lyrics of what became Lipstick Vogue) (solo)
I Hear A Melody (Unreleased) (solo)
Blue Minute (Unreleased) (solo)
Chelsea
Radio Radio
Lipstick Vogue
Pump It Up
Stranger In The House (version 2)
I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (version 3)
Really Mystified (version 2)
It sounds to me that the last 3 songs were used for the BBC Session (which they also recorded Danger Zone for).
The second disc again features the Attractions but has All This Useless Beauty outtakes followed by Brutal Youth outtakes. The track listing is
Forgive Her Anything
God Give Me Strength
Little Atoms (version 1)
All This Useless Beauty
Why Can't A Man Stand Alone?
Shallow Grave (version 1)
Shallow Grave (version 2)
It's Starting To Come To Me
Other End Of The Telescope (with the original 'Til Tuesday lyrics)
Poor Fractured Atlas (with Elvis laughing on the first time he says the title)
You Bowed Down
Distorted Angel (version 1)
Distorted Angel (version 2)
Distorted Angel (version 3) (faster version)
London's Brilliant Parade
Pony Street
Clown Strike (solo)
Just About Glad
Still Too Soon To Know (solo)
Little Atoms (version 2)
Almost Ideal Eyes
Punishing Kiss
Does anyone have any information about this set?
And before you ask, I haven't got a copy. I'm not sure if it's going to come into circulation. I hope it does.

I'd love to hear a brutal youth take on God give me strength...NOT!
but it sounds fun anyway. Why elvis would want to record this, however, I do not know.

What - you'd like Elvis & The Attractions to have played it before Elvis wrote itExtreme Honey wrote:I'd love to hear a brutal youth take on God give me strength...NOT!

These tracks will probably show up on the next This Year's Model, Brutal Youth and All This Useless Beauty reissues. We all know it's going to happen.

To strangerinthehouse: Punishing Kiss is the title track of an Ute Lemper album where she also slaughters Couldn't You Keep That To Yourself? and the otherwise great Passionate Fight, as well as songs by the likes of Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. Now I have superior versions of these songs on EC boots, which renders that CD close to redundant, but I remember being excited by the surprising merry-go-round-sounding bridge on Punishing Kiss that sort of fit Ute's teutonic delivery but must have been too much for Annie Ross, as it's cut from her Short Cuts take. Now, if the Attractions cut it with the vibe of Almost Ideal Eyes still in them, it must sound great.
What this world needs is more silly men.

From listerv -
'Unloved Songs Vol 1' has been knocking about for quite a while,
although it
doesn't seem to have had that wide a circulation. It was one of those
nudge-nudge, I'm-not-supposed-to-copy-this-for-anyone-but... jobs. My
suspicion is that it was put together by somebody with access (legal or
otherwise) to the mock-ups of potential bonus material circulating
around
Rhino HQ.
Track listing according to some notes I found lurking on my PC:
01 REALLY MYSTIFIED
02 THE PRICE OF LOVE
03 I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF
04 I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF
05 STRANGER IN THE HOUSE
06 CALL ON ME
07 I HEAR A MELODY
08 BLUE MINUTE
09 CHELSEA
10 RADIO RADIO
11 LIPSTICK VOGUE
12 PUMP IT UP
13 STRANGER IN THE HOUSE
14 I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF
15 REALLY MYSTIFIED
My best guesses as to sources:
01-05 BBC Peel session outtakes
06-08 Pathway Studios demo recordings pre-MAIT
09-11 Alternate studio recordings
12 Recorded for TV?
13-15 BBC Peel session broadcast tracks (inferior quality)
As far as I recall, Volume 2 consisted of around 20 or so 'All This
Useless
Beauty' & 'Brutal Youth' demos/outtakes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll dig out my copy of Vol. 2 later and post details .

Thanks, as ever, John.
I wonder how many volumes of this type are around but not being shared. It's not for me to say but I also wonder how many fans are very precious about rarities and have their own little "superior" cliques.
Sorry, but I was brought up to share.
I'll ask my mate if he knows if this is in general circulation and if it is I'll get a copy. Form an orderly queue.
As I do not have copying facilities I am sure there will be someone out there who'll be able to do copies for board members for me.

#1, "Forgive Her Anything," is the same version as on Rhino's Blood & Chocolate, although it does include a count-in missing from the official release. It's from 1986, not 1995.
I have a hunch #14, "Distorted Angel," is from the Brutal Youth sessions (1993), but I don't know for sure.
#22 is "Punishing Kiss."
I believe 15-22 are all from 1993 or earlier.

I'm not sure if anyone has a copy of this - certainly if they have then they've kept quiet since I first reviewed it.wardo68 wrote:Anyway, perhaps this is well-covered territory amongst the old-timers, but has a tape/CD tree been considered or undertaken via this forum?
As I said earlier, my mate said it was not for trading so I haven't got a copy of it. If it is generally available I'll get a copy and sort out some sort of distribution through the board members.

I was more talking about a tape/CD tree in general; the Trading Post has been great resource, but for those who don't have broadband or burning capabilities a tree might help them out. I've got a few things in my meager stash that might be of interest. I'll study on it some.verbal gymnastics wrote: As I said earlier, my mate said it was not for trading so I haven't got a copy of it.
