My co-worker was telling me today how her sister and brother-in-law liked to watch "Law & Order" with their two-year-old in the room, because they figured she wasn't picking up on any of it. Then last night, as the theme music started to play, their daughter looked up and said, "Someone died." Kids are awesome. I can't wait to have some. I miss my nephew!
For a long time I thought I didn't want kids, but now I'd like to have maybe one or two.

So how about we have some?

You're once, twice, three times a lay-dee
And I lo-hu-hu-hu-ve yoooouuuuu
I lo-hu-hu-hu-ve yoooooouuuuuu

I thank you for your muted applause

I've just received a cheque from the Inland Revenue for £86 for overpayment of National Insurance contributions for two years ago. And I've just sent them the information for last year.

Why do I feel that they'll give with one hand and take back more with the other?

Here's your award - a Lionel Richie clay head, from quite possibly the dumbest video ever.

I thought I'd erased that Hello video from my mind.

It is cringing!

If you're into "designing trainers, writing music, collecting records, sassy dresses and Sunday roasts" AND have a few spare quid, Lily Allen is waiting for you on the couch.

I only realised I was approaching the big 3-0 (00) this morning.

Three (thousand) is a magic number

Surely I've missed something, but when did Judy Blume become so controversial? Banned? Really? What'd she do, go all communist or satan-worshipping or something? Too much talk about tampons and training bras?

OK, but we'll have to guide them towards not being too needy, but then that's what I'd be inclined to do in any case. How else shall we mold them? For one thing, I think they should have the chance to learn instruments eventually.

They should have the chance, but not be forced! It's very disheartening to play the violin for six years and never get any better!

One year ago today, I was stepping off a plane in Buenos Aires and having a minor panic attack.

Exactly. Simple enough to say. Hard as hell to live, but one of the key secrets to building a trusting and honest relationship with your kids... early. We exposed both of my kids to an almost ridiculous (and expensive)array of activities, sports, events. In the case of both of my children, only a few stuck, but they were the things that WE would not have picked for them, and they have excelled beyond our wildest treams in these areas.

Sure, we all want to vicariously live through our kids, but to a great degree that behaviour is one of the biggest downfalls of parenting. There is no formula. Exposure and support.

 I know what you mean Blue.

I visited my mother yesterday who asked what I would like for Christmas and then I went to see my nephews who had put some pictures from a toy catalogue onto a big piece of card with a message to Father Christmas, bless them.

We have been talking at work about suggestions for our Christmas party and Mrs VG told me that one of the local stores has its Christmas display out already

It seems like only yesterday that I was falling about in the pub wishing everyone a happy new year.

Actually, it was only yesterday

Most random and surreal thing that's ever happened to me: some dude stopped me om the Walmart parking lot to ask if I was from JERSEY .

It was the Metrostars t-shirt.

Talking of Jersey, it struck me as odd as I stood on the deck of a swanky dining boat sailing down the Hudson and looking over to Joisey city that I couldn't answer why I, son (from age 5) of the humble (if obsecenely rich) island of Jersey, 15 miles off the French coast and all that, didn't know why New Jersey became named thus. I asked a native of NJ, rather well versed in local history, it seemed, and she had no clue. I said there was probably someone like the Malet de Carteret family that went there and named it thus, but she made no response. People seemed to disbelieve me that it was named in honour of the motherisle, but why else call it that? Funny thing is, it's not, in my awareness from 13 years of living there, common knowledge in our Jersey, as in the new variety, that it was in fact George Carteret who named it thus. So I was half right.

In response to other randomness:

1. I had a good chuckle when I learned this weekend that Where's Wally? here is called Where's Waldo? there. Sounds bizarre to this ear.

2. Kids and activities: indeed. Save some cash, suggest the odd thing, but make sure they have lots of evenings in the week, and time at the weekend, where they aren't doing much. I'm surrounded by hot-housing idiots here and they don't quite get that letting kids sort out interests and passions for themselves up to a point is healthy, as is working out how to occupy themselves, etc. That's my take, and yes, 3 is a great number.

A very pretty girl smiled and winked at me (either that or she's got a twitch  ) as I walked in the office this morning.

I looked in a mirror and there was nothing hanging out of my nose, no overnight dribble that I'd forgotten to wash off and I'd shaved both sides of my face. Indeed there was nothing wrong with me that I could see (well, nothing worse than usual).

It was a nice start to my day. :D
