Painting a Bridge

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Why paint it if it's just going to get painted over again?

Paint it some colour that is not harsh to look at but pleasing to the eye for a bridge - like cobalt blue or dark olive green -- and paint on red and black warning signs at each end that say:

Unauthorized painters will be prosecuted
to the full extent of the law.
By order of the Lord Mayor.

Maximum penalty: $10 000.

"Have you seen the bridge? Where's the confounded bridge?"

Painting a bridge smacks of effort... I don't get it.

I vote for the Being There plug. Or perhaps ELVIS IS KING, with a little picture so people know which one you mean..... 8)

Or perhaps a tribute to TMBG:

"When I was driving once I saw this painted on a bridge:
I don’t want the world, I just want your half"

What you need is a stencil. If you're handy with photoshop (I'm not very) you could convert a simple image like the Trust cover or the MAIT stance and convert it to half-tone, and then trace it onto cradboard, et voila, nice Elvis stencil.

my all-time favorite underpass graffiti -

Bill Is Gay

I don't know whether someone was trying to insult Bill - or if Bill was making a declaration. It struck me as funny.

"Jesus Saves...he shoots, he scores!"

Here's an oldie but a goodie for those with long memories and from cities with good size Jewish populations....

"Save Soviet Jewry...win valuable prizes!"

From the first issue of "Howard the Duck": "Free the New York 8 Million!"

And, for West Los Angeles people only "Free Bob Avakian!" (an utterly, I'm sure justly, obscure Maoist who was a graffitti star in L.A. back in the day....I heard name-checked for the first time in years on my local Pacifica station recently, reminding me of the reason I rarely listen to Pacifica....)

Or it could be Free George Davis for the Brits who might remember that campaign?

I'm not sure how obscure he is...somebody is advertising a DVD of his speeches all over the place (okay, The Nation) lately. Why someone would pay good money to buy speeches, and then spend good time watching them on DVD, is beyond me, but apparently they are. Anyway, that might be why he was name-checked on Pacifica, bobster.

Overpassed

Seen somewhere out in the middle of nowhere:

"Donna is a hore"

(Thanks for the heads-up, dude!)

Written on the back of a filthy 18-wheeler:

"Jesus died for you, asshole!"

(I know, man, and I try to put in a good word for him when I can...)

Seen in toilet stall in distant interstate highway rest area:

"Wed, Thur night, 10 pm meet here. Bring penis"

(I never leave home without it!)

Ever hear Robbie Robertson's song about Peltier off his Contact From The Underworld of Redboy album? It's pretty chilling as it features Peltier describing over the phone what happened to him and talking about his life in prison.

We had that too...but that's a bit of a horse of a different color. "Free Mumia" on the other hand...well, I might start a five way shootin' war with that name check...(Personally, I more of a "retry Mumia, then probably find him guilty again, or not, but can't we all find someone's who's not a big ol' psychotic idiot to free?")
