You want to introduce Costello songs to someone.

Pretty self-explanatory

I would find compiling a 12 song tape too hard. I introduced my sister-in-law with a 70 track triple CD compilation last year but unfortunately I don't think she is fully converted yet. In fact I don't think I've ever introduced Elvis to anyone who's gone on to be a big fan. Anyone out there had more success? If so, how did you do it?

Really, the only way to do it (and this is not foolproof) is to do a Pavlovian sort of thing with sex.

It would also depend on the person you are trying to influence.

I tried to do just that for a friend of mine. In my case, it was a friend who only likes "the old stuff" (i.e., MAIT, TYM, and AF). I wanted to introduce him to songs he wouldn't otherwise have heard, but would like. This pretty much eliminated anything from Juliet Letters, Painted from Memory, and North, as I fugured he wouldn't like that anyway. I found that I ended up with a watered down version of Girls, Girls, Girls.

For someone else, you may want to include the softer stuff, like Still Have That Other Girl and Still.

If you didn't have the 12 song limit, I'd say give him (or her) a copy of Girls x 3, which is what sent me from an EC dabbler to an EC fanatic!

I'd play em:

Broken
Playboy to a Man
Big Nothing
Stalin Malone
Walking on Thin Ice
Soul For Hire
For the Stars (in it's entirety)
Kojak Variety (roll the dice)
Goon Squad
The John Wesley Harding Anthology

If they're still speaking to me after this, I consider it a win!

Uncomplicated (dramatic opening)

Oliver's Army (pop rush)

Pump It Up (stompin' dance)

Beyond Belief (unique, unclassifiable classic)

Head To Toe (light, up-beat relief after turbulence of Beyond Belief)

Doll Revolution (trippy dance)

Impatience (Latin feel - shows variety - and dancability)

Other End Of Telescope (gorgeous vocal, piano showcase)

London's Brill (warm vocal, gorgeous melody)

Chelsea (just in case you're getting too cosy by this point)

Man Out Of Time (epic closer)

World's Great Optimist (hopeful, simple coda after desolation of Man Out Of Time)

It's a great song, with great lyrics, great vocal melody, great vocal delivery... and even my mom likes it.

It's a very accessible song, especially for the spoken "Good Squad".
