What are you listening to right now?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

I've been loving Canvey Island from the highly praised new British Sea Power help Do You Like Rock? Now I'm checking out Waving Flags on Hype Machine. A celebration of the influx of Eastern Europeans into Britain. check out the aforementioned Canvey Island on this link too. Took me a few plays to really get it into my head, but it's a fantastic piece.

Tom Waits. The Heart of Saturday Night and Real Gone. It's an interesting study in the changes. It's almost like two different artists. But yes. Waitsy mood lately.
Why don't you write about it in your blag?

Harry Nillson - Pussycats, specifically 'Don't Forget Me'. I'd love to hear Ryan Adams tear into this song.

Which do you prefer? I've always felt he's got more interesting with time, but found Real Gone real hard to enjoy. Some of it's great, much of it feels like hard work. THOSN is a great record - some great songs. Was playing Rain Dogs the other day. Still my fave by some distance.

I just listened to Heart Attack and Vine, the last of his 'old school' albums before he launched the clanky, abstract second half of his fabulous career. 'Ruby's Arms' can still reduce me to tears for no apparent reason.

Well, I'm not too familiar with either of them yet; haven't had the chance to really sit down and give all the attention I need to for it. My fav is still Swordfishtrombones, probably because I'm the most familiar with it. There's a lot to be said for songs like New Coat of Paint, but also a lot for Hoist That Rag or Shake It. That's a toughie. I think it's like apples and oranges. Right now, Real Gone. Tomorrow, maybe, Heart of Saturday Night. But I only have four, remember...those three and Heart Attack and Vine, which is difficult to get a real good listen to because I only have it on vinyl, so I have to sit in my room to listen to it.

StrictTime - do yourself a favour and get Rain Dogs next. Definitely Waits' best.

And follows on perfectly from Rain Dogs. Your comment about sitting in your room is an amusing marker of changing times - when I was a teen that was the only place I listened to music. I spent a hell of a lot of time in my room.

My experience with music as well Otis. In my early teens I loved lots of types of music, but mostly hard rock, punk, and metal. In a well-intentioned effort to 'understand' the music I listened to, my folks invited to me to play a Song of the Evening on the stereo upstairs in the living room. For the first session, I chose one I knew they'd like: Don Henley's 'Johnny Can't Read' which was on the very, very light end of my spectrum. Sure enough they loved it, dancing around the living room to my astonishment. With that great beginning, I decided the next night that they might enjoy 'Tyrant' by Judas Priest. That was the last Song of the Evening.

As always, thanks for the advice. I was wondering what to do next. I smell a collection coming on.

Great story Pophead - can't say I blame your parents! That was a pretty cool thing of them to do. That would never have happened in my house. More typical was the memory of wanting to see something Elvis Presley-related on the telly in my early teens, and my dad objecting to 'this racket', so I ran upstairs to play Rebel, Rebel at wall-shaking volume instead.

It had been a while since I'd listened to this all-the-way through.

It was the album that got me into Wilco, and it still stands up pretty well. It's remarkable how different the band sounds at this point, though.

Yeah, but she ripped the title off East Anglia's answer to alt country, The Broken Family Band, who I had the pleasure of seeing live again recently, and their penultimate and pretty decent LP:

Well, she's touring the UK soon. Feel free to confront her about that.

This morning, it's Amy's Back to Black B sides, and I can't find a photo. Monkey Man?

Newcastle, Sheffield, London and Glasgow. I guess I won't be confronting her. She could have done a double-headliner with the Cambridge boys where they both played Balls in their respective entireties and called it A Great Pair of Balls.

Current tuneage is a playlist called Good Stuff, featuring Mr. Brightside, Rich Girl, Too Many Teardrops, etc. Obviously MY definition of good stuff.
