not just another old-geezer-meets-mortality record. this is fun! any record with Keith Richards AND George Jones has got to be good.

I had to look up the word 'polemical'. Who says this board isn't educational?

Buckinghams new solo record, and its just magic. Its on permanent rotation at the moment, and will probably stay there for a while. More acoustic than his others, and he has really developed and honed his own style to something truly unique. His guitar playing is just miraculous and the whole thing is drenched in Beach Boy harmonies, and beautiful subtle production. Sheer fucking brilliance that will no doubt be completely overlooked.

Two words or one? Is this a Bragg masterpiece you're encouraging me to check out? I'll see if I can find the motivation!

Otis - I must admit that I just assumed you were a fan of Billy Bragg.

Personally I think he has written some of the finest love songs I have ever heard (even though he does not have the right voice to carry them off). Songs such as Valentine's Day Is Over and Must I Paint You A Picture? (both from Worker's Playtime) are just glorious in my view.

I think part of the Billy Bragg experience is seeing him live. He's great fun and tells great anecdotes. I would highly recommend seeing him live. If you don't like him I'll give you your money back (you'll have to come to the London meet up after December to get it though!).

This tour is really still promoting the box sets so he's been playing loads of old classic stuff (although I know you'll like it if he starts singing "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" on the end of one of his songs as he did last time!).

I'm currently listening to We Are The Pipettes - The Pipettes which is really jolly. It's hard to get past the opening track.

It's a fun album and great for the car!

How is it? Can the new album live up to expectations? Actually, I just foundd it. Well he's still with Lisa (supposedly she'd grown to hate him, but maybe that was idle gossip). Sounds very unsingleish, but typically intense. V interested to hear LP, though.

How does new Decemberists compare to first? First had some great songs, even if if his voice grates on my nerves.

VG: intend to see Billy live to have a Damascene conversion.

Me? I'm mainly only listening to Antidepressant right now, the most undepressing record imaginable cos it's so damn good. I'm at the stage, familiar from all Lloyd records, where it's now all worked its way into my head such that you can't imagine existing without it.

The Crane Wife is actually their fourth album, Otis.

Wow! I thought I'd read the last was the first. The first to come to attention in the UK, I guess. I love We Both Go Down Together, although that's him putting on a cod-English accent at its worst. I don't think you agreed with me there, MBA, but he is strangling his vowels even more than Loyd Grossman (weird thought, do you even know Loyd Grossman, Blue, and if so, from the UK or from home?). Much mocked in the 90s due to hiss vowels, now much on the supermarket shelves with his cooking sauces. I think he used to write for Rolling Stone or something. Anyway, if Colin Melloy ever needs a stand-in, Loyd's the man.

I can see I'm going to have (even more) difficulty going to bed now I've come across Hype Machine. I couldn't leave it without checking out what they had for Sufjan. In NY he mentioned, before playing That Was The Worst Christmas Ever, recording songs for a Christmas album, including my favourite carol (not quite the right word), O Come, O Come Emmanuel. haunting and poetic. Hype has it:

Lovely.

They also did several EPs, including Five Songs and The Tain. They're a fairly divisive band -- loved by many, despised by others. I've spoken to a couple of people who originally thought their music was a bite mannered and pretentious, but gave their them a second chance and have since become fans. A few others I know don't want to have anything to do with them.

Yeah, who the hell is this Loyd Grossman character?

I like what Colin Meloy does to vowels. I can always get past the unconventional voice, if it's singing a great lyric.

I love Sexuality and am very fond of his albums. I rate Taxman as one of the best british albums ever.

The best Pretenders album, in its new 2 record remastered incarnation. And if the original brilliance of the record isnt enough the mostly Live 2nd CD is a great selection of songs played ragged but right. Honeyman Scott was a great guitarist.
