Spike interview

Post by Otis Westinghouse »

Just reading this interesting Sean O'Hagan interview with EC at the time of Spike from the NME:

http://www.elviscostello.info/articles/ ... 0218a.html

Don't quite get why listening to Michael Blair's percussion made him think about Spike Jones.

Like the suggestion of 'Spike: The Beloved Entertainer' with Spike as verb.

Cait pregnant? Have I missed something? Did she lose it? Had she been attacking the cream buns too much at the time?

I remember that there were many rumors, at the time, that Cait was pregnant and lost the baby. It was denied on all fronts so who knows if there was any truth to it.

Hard to believe that was 17 years ago!!!

I had heard (and read) that years ago. I've always felt that Couldn't Call It Unexpected has something to say about it, but it is just a feeling....

I agree about Couldn't Call It Unexpected. Definite reference to a real tragedy and the ghost of a child. Cait's pregnancy is mentioned in the book Complicated Shadows..... seems Bebe Buell lost some of EC's potential progeny too.

Real bad luck.

On a less grave note...

Ah, for the days when a new EC record was an EVENT to be anxiously covered by the music press, and analyzed and probed by critics as something of major importance to pop. Somewhere around 'The Juliet Letters' EC lost that kind of currency. Oh, well.

Just stumbled across this long interview. Not sure if it has been posted elsewhere.

Either my memory is getting worse or I wasn't aware of the Rubén Blades collaborations. They're on Spotify so will check out.

Long interview! Great stuff. Elvis being very earnest. Slightly absurd questions.
