Thanks all for the birthday greetings (on-time or otherwise) and apologies for my late response.
The company I work for managed to ensure I had a memorable birthday by handing me a retrenchment notice on Friday... thank you ACI, in Omaha!! Nice to know that 9 years of solid work was so greatly appreciated - got to love that corporate culture!
Anyway, I will hold belated celebrations when we (the family) make it to Japan at the end of next week. Three years since my wife has seen her family as well as our youngest Liam's birthday the day after we arrive... plenty of cause to celebrate and put all of the bad memories behind us - at least until we have to revisit reality in a month's time.
PS. Anyone after a technical writer?

That is really unconscionable--don't they know that the First Law of Birthdays is that nothing bad happens to you on your birthday? I once had a boyfriend wait two weeks to rip my heart into a million pieces and make me incapable of ever really loving anyone again out of respect for the First Law of Birthdays. And believe me, I appreciated that. But I know you'll get on your feet and get a BETTER job. You'll show them!
