What's a touring librarian?
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?

it must be the person who is in charge of the tour library.verbal gymnastics wrote:What's a touring librarian?

Jocelyn Morlock tells me , via a Twitter private message ,
In short it's an orchestral librarian (orch shows only) and copyist - I prepare scores/parts, liase with orchestra, keep music organized.
I've been listening to & enjoying Jocelyn's 'Cobalt' album after hearing it on John Kelly's radio show on Lyric FM. When he first played it he mentioned that she had worked with Elvis, suggesting he was sent either through Elvis or on his suggestion. Jocelyn also did string arrangements on the Wendy Bird album that Elvis played on.

Black Francis: soundtrack of my life
The Pixies frontman on listening to Elvis Costello until his head hurt, relaxing to Bill Evans – and why Elton John is more than Candle in the Wind
Interview by Killian Fox
The Observer, Sunday 29 June 2014
(extract)
THE ONE I LISTENED TO UNTIL MY HEAD HURT
This Year's Model, Elvis Costello and the Attractions (1978)
Before I dropped out to start the Pixies, I was in university in Massachusetts. [Future Pixies guitarist] Joey Santiago and I rented a house in the second year. I took the dark windowless room because it had a stereo and I would just sit in the dark and listen to Iggy Pop and XTC records for hours and hours. The one I listened to the most, though, was This Year's Model. They had it on cassette tape at the music library in college, which I remember had these horrible hard plastic headphones, like something you might find in the Soviet Union in 1959. Instead of studying I'd go in there and listen to Elvis Costello over and over until my ears hurt and my head couldn't take it anymore.

A U.K. music fan has a site where a humorous letter is sent to a songwriter regarding a literal interpretation of a song. Bruce Thomas has replied to one about Oliver's Army.

A latter day 'Columbus' Ohio incident laughingly remembered by EC and a NY Time's columnist following the recent Carnegie Hall shows-three years on and in today's NY Times Metropolitan section:

Elvis provides the following quote on Larkin Poe's your flyer:
"Already gifted as instrumentalists, they have a head start on the rest of us with the unique power & beauty of sibling harmony".
Their (fantastic) new album, Kin, also credits thanks to "E.C.".

How interesting. I've just found out that this 1984 drawing , from In Dublin magazine, is by Arthur Matthews , who went on to be co-creator of the Fr Ted tv series.
It is, of course, based on this David Bailey photo from 1983.
Arthur tells me , via Twitter, that he has a colour, original version of this & he'll send me a photo of it when he finds it!

From the Record Collector Weekly News
The building RC's offices are located in, The Perfume Factory, used to be where Elizabeth Arden made cosmetics. Elvis Costello worked for them on the premises and refers to it as "the vanity factory" in I'm Not Angry. The owners of the building have put a large monument to Elvis outside and, last Friday, Elvis popped in to see it. Here is the legend pictured with the lovely Monika, the building's receptionist.

A countdown of the 100 best songs about Memphis includes:
http://www.commercialappeal.com/go-memp ... o-and-more84. “Worthless Thing” — Elvis Costello (1984): The other Elvis — Costello, that is — wrote one of the best, most scathing songs about the pitfalls of fame and the culture of “Dead Elvis” — the economic exploitation and spiritual necrophilia of the late, lamented King. "Do you know his mother's last name/Do you think that he's divine?," asks Costello. "You've seen the film/You've read the book/You're drinking vintage Elvis Presley wine." The song, however, is also deeply autobiographical — filled with passing references to the trials and temptations Costello faced along his own path to stardom. A complex and multilayered view of the Presley phenomenon, fittingly, by the man who took his name. -- Mehr

Josh McClorey of The Strypes Discusses Elvis Costello's 'My Aim Is True' — The Record That Changed My Life

I chose this record not so much for the guitar playing—well, a little bit for the guitar playing—but just for the songwriting, and how you can really write punk rock and roll tunes while still being intelligent about it.
Costello just hit me like a ton of bricks when I got into him. His lyrics blew my mind when I first heard them. And that record is so great because it’s so raw; it’s like a real snapshot of where he was at the time.
There’s not a bad tune on there, not even a mediocre one. They’re very catchy tunes, but very punky and just really angry, but also with really intelligent lyrics.
My Aim Is True was a huge influence on our first record. We all really love rhythm and blues and the immediacy of it—that sort of ballsy thing—but I also really love melodies; I’m a huge fan of Scott Walker and all those big-sounding Sixties records with beautiful melodies. Costello seemed to just get it right in the middle.

Here's Nils on EC in Rolling Stone:

Of the testimonials in the package, which ones surprised you the most?
I had no idea Elvis Costello was familiar with Grin that early on, from the very first record. I remember seeing him with the Attractions in Santa Monica and I thought, "Wow, a great band" — punk or whatever they called it. So that was surprising.

Bill Nershi’s Saturday Solo Set
After much-needed hydration and rest, many began their hot and sunny Saturday afternoon with Bill Nershi (The String Cheese Incident) and his solo set. Billy is a fantastic guitar player with a sound of his own, and it’s rare to get to see him play alone. Nershi opened with “Two Dollar Bill”, also known as “Long Journey Home”, written by Elvis Costello. Per usual, Billy was given a two-dollar bill at the end of the song by a member of the audience. Jillian Nershi, Billy’s wife, joined him near the beginning of the set for a much-loved Colorado duo. About halfway through the “solo” set, guitarist Tyler Grant of Grant Farm was graciously welcomed on stage for a timely and feel-good 8-minute “Colorado Bluebird Sky.” Billy’s positive and special energy was felt and appreciated by all at YarmonyGrass this year.

TENNESSEE THOMAS IS OPENING A POP-UP SHOP/COOL KID CLUBHOUSE
by Emma Orlow
AUGUST 6, 2013
Where does the name for the store come from?
Well, we've thrown ourselves straight into the deep end! My dad [Pete Thomas, drummer for Elvis Costello's band] had a thing called "The Deep End Club" when he was crazy in his band. If somebody called a Deep End Club meeting, everyone had to jump in the pool fully clothed regardless of what was in their pockets. It seemed appropriate. I also like that it's a club with a clubhouse.

Elvis Costello on the radio, 1994
Published on 14 Jun 2014
While converting my old cassettes to digital, I came across this. It's Costello on Simon Mayo's BBC Radio 1 mid-morning show, publicising his Brutal Youth tour and new single, London's Brilliant Parade. On these snippets, he sings Indoor Fireworks and New Amsterdam and talks, among other things, about reuniting with the Attractions, writing a song with Paul McCartney called I Don't Want to Confess, and helping to kill the career of Transvision Vamp's Wendy James. The internet tells me that this was on 10 November, and that I don't have all of it - it seems he also sang Rocking Horse Road later on. Maybe I had to go out or something..
