Elvis plays Deni Blues & Roots Fest, Easter 2014, Australia

Post by Jeremy Dylan »

As part of the organising team behind this festival, I'm very pleased to let you guys know that Elvis, Steve, Davey and Pete will be making their Deniliquin debut next Easter weekend.

For those of you who don't know, Deni is technically in NSW, but much closer to Melbourne (about a 3 hour drive). This will be the second Deni Blues and Roots Festival, held on the gorgeous plains on Conargo Rd. We are announcing Elvis and the Imposters today, joining a lineup that includes John Mayer, Dr John, the Doobie Brothers, Steve Earle, Gary Clark Jr, Grace Potter, Boz Scaggs, Michael Franti, Edward Sharpe, Russell Morris, The Wailers, the Soul Rebels and a whole bunch of others.

I would encourage any Melbournites to make the trek down as not only is it going to be a thoroughly enjoyable weekend, with gorgeous weather, but also because Elvis isn't doing a Melbourne gig on this trip, so it will be your best opportunity to see him.

Tickets are already on sale and you can grab yours here: http://denibluesfestival.com/

Here is the press release for today's announcement:

Deni Blues & Roots Festival Full line up for 2014 announced!
Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Boz Scaggs, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Steve Earle & The Dukes, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Wailers, Soul Rebels, Neil Murray, Harry Hookey and more!
John Mayer, Dr John & The Nite Trippers, The Doobie Brothers, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Gary Clark Jr, Russell Morris, Jasmine Rae and
Cash Savage and the Last Drinks already announced!

TWO DAYS OF NON‐STOP MUSIC, ONSITE CAMPING, TWO STAGES ONLY 3 HOURS FROM MELBOURNE - TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

For release: Friday, 8 November, 2013: After an Award winning first year and 2014 Early Bird Ticket sales going through the proverbial roof, Deni Blues and Roots Festival announce the 2nd and final artist announcement for Festival’s sophomore event over the Easter Weekend of 2014 - Saturday 19 April and Sunday 20 April - in Deniliquin in southern New South Wales.

The second round of artists announced for the 2014 Festival are Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Boz Scaggs, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Steve Earle & The Dukes, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Wailers, Soul Rebels, Neil Murray, Harry Hookey, Peter McWhirter, Jackson Firebird, Owen Campbell, Shaun Kirk, Joel Sulman, Michael Gorham and Frank Macias.

The two day Deni Blues & Roots Festival is unique for southern NSW and provides a great festival for music fans in the Southern States utilising the massive Deni Ute Muster site which is just 3 hours from Melb, 4 hours from Canberra and less than 5 hours by road from Adelaide. The purpose built site has had millions of dollars of permanent staging and lighting infrastructure, toilets and showers and bar facilities installed in recent years. Both events have been underpinned by overwhelming community support with an army of volunteers, contributions from many local businesses and great vision from the steering committee that established and built the site at Deniliquin. The inaugural Deni Blues & Roots Festival in 2013 also took out the Best Festival Award at the Inland Tourism Awards earlier this year.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said, “The NSW Government is pleased to support the Deni Blues & Roots Festival, which last year attracted many visitors to the region, and contributed more than $1 million to the local economy.

"Testament to the calibre of the event, the inaugural Deni Blues & Roots Festival was winner of the Festival & Events Category at the 2013 Inland Tourism Awards.”
Member for Murray-Darling, John Williams, said, “I’m delighted that the NSW Government’s investment in Regional tourism has increased and remains a firm commitment, last year delivering around 73 million nights of accommodation and $9.3 billion in tourism expenditure.

“This year, the Deni Blues & Roots Festival continues to showcase world-class entertainment, which will attract heightened tourism into our community and help boost the local economy.”
The artists announced today join John Mayer, Dr John & The Nite Trippers, The Doobie Brothers, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Gary Clark Jr, Russell Morris, Jasmine Rae and Cash Savage and the Last Drinks for the Festival’s return in 2014.

Co-promoter, Michael Chugg from Chugg Entertainment said, “It’s a thrill to make our 2nd line up announcement for the Deni Blues & Roots festival including Boz Scaggs, Michael Franti and Spearhead and Steve Earle and the Dukes. It’s a huge coup to have Elvis Costello and The Imposters in Deni especially as they’re not appearing in Melbourne. Along with John Mayer and The Doobie Brothers, it’s going to be a great Easter Weekend!”

Harold Clapham, Chairman of Deni Play on the Plains Festivals, said today “We thought that last year was amazing and now we are blown away by this year’s line-up. To see and hear and get close to John Mayer and Elvis Costello at the best outdoor music venue in regional Australia will be something not to be missed.”

Co-promoter Rob Potts, CEO, Rob Potts Entertainment said “We now have another sensational international and local line-up headed to Deniliquin at Easter for two days of the best live music you could hope for. With the weather at its best for the year over Easter, it all adds up to a music lover’s paradise – two massive stages, great camping facilities, plenty of grass and room to spread out and only three hours from Melbourne. We’re really excited to be back for year number two of the Deni Blues and Roots Festival.”

The second round of artists confirmed to appear at the Deni Blues & Roots Festival in 2014:

Elvis Costello & The Imposters

It's pretty much impossible to corral the musical curiosity of a luminous career spanning 4 decades, in which Elvis Costello has carved out his own special place in the pantheon of rock history. A swag of nominations and awards litter that historic trail - evidence of the respect and awe this performer commands from his peers. Such diversity and credibility over that number of years tells its own story of legend. Many fans will have gold plated memories of his performances with The Attractions, The Imposters and for concert appearances with pianist Steve Nieve. Note that this will be the only opportunity for Victorian fans to see this musical legend outside of his appearances in Sydney and Byron Bay.

Many others will remember the wide range of Elvis Costello songs delivered by artists as varied as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Robert Wyatt, and the gospel vocal group The Fairfield Four. More recently he gate crashed his own horizons by 'collaborpartying' with The Roots, producing Wise Up Ghost, one of 2013's finest musical offerings and Deni Blues & Roots Festival are thrilled to have Elvis Costello & The Imposters grace our stage in 2014.

Great news Jeremy!

Can you share any of the background details of getting Elvis on this bill? Did your people go to his people or the other way around? Did they specify that Elvis 'n co. had to be headliners or close to? I hardly expect you to be specific re fees but was it a lot more (or less!) than others on the bill? Any back stage requirements - oxygen tents, M 'n Ms without the blue ones etc? Was your work with Jim Lauderdale a help in getting Elvis' peoples attention?

As you may expect John, a lot of that speaks to confidential contractual provisions which would be unethical, or at least impolite, for me to disclose publicly.

I can say that my work with Jim had zero to do with securing Elvis for the festival, it is just a happy coincidence. Our co-promoters Chugg Entertainment have toured him many times before, so there is a long established relationship there. We made the approach for the festival, and Elvis's people were immediately receptive, as Australia has long been a strong touring market for Elvis and we had an excellent first year at the festival, which included Status Quo, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Cliff, Jason Mraz, Chris Isaak, Tony Joe White, Santana, Steve Miller Band and Zac Brown Band performing.

Elvis billing and playing time (which we haven't released yet) is mutually agreed upon between us and Elvis's management (as it is with all the artists), based upon a number of factors.

I just hope Elvis and the Doobie Brothers are scheduled in a way that allows John McFee to make a guest appearance during Elvis' set.

They could duet on a pair of Allen Toussaint songs they've both recorded: "What Do You Want the Girl to Do?" and Freedom For The Stallion."

Boz was performing "What Do You Want the Girl to Do?" as recently as 2006. Coincidentally, all of EC's performances were in 2006 too.

The “Time to Pay” option can only be ordered via internet bookings made through the Deni Blues & Roots Festival website. For further information on the “Time to Pay” option, please visit (www.denibluesfestival.com.au).

The inaugural Deni Blues & Roots Festival held earlier this year has taken out three major Tourism Awards including Best Festival Award at the Inland Tourism Awards as well as the Best Festival & Event and the Bronze Award in the New Tourism Development category at last week’s NSW Tourism Awards.

Speaking at last week’s NSW Tourism Awards, sponsored through the Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, The Hon. George Souris MP, Minister for Tourism and Major Events, highlighted the importance of tourism to NSW’s economy, the State, which leads the nation in international and domestic tourism.

“Tourism now contributes more than $50,000 every minute to the NSW economy – that is more than $3 million per hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This is an increase of more than six per cent since 2011,” Mr Souris said.

“Tourism is the lifeblood of many of the State’s towns and we are committed to promoting tourism in the regions as well as supporting events like the Deni Blues & Roots Festival, which all create local jobs, providing a boost to regional economies even further.”

Some general notes on the show

- Elvis was in teriffic voice. Particularly with the rapid fire delivery in Chelsea, he shot the lyrics out with swagger and precision. The Imposters were incredibly tight, in that great mid-tour groove a band gets to after a few shows.

- There was a group of 20-something girls head banging through the funkier parts of the set and really digging it. If they weren't fans already, EC cast his spell over the younger end of our crowd on Saturday night.

- The WUG songs sounded teriffic in their Imposters clothes. Sugar Won't Work was one of the highlights of the set for me, with some nice shredding from Elvis on the guitar.
