Elvis Costello in East Troy on September 3, 1989

Post by SoulForHire »

I hope this is not an inappropriate use of a post.

I was looking at the Costello gigography and notice that there was no information relating to his show with the Rude 5 at Alpine Valley (East Troy, WI) on September 3, 1989. This was a notable show for me, so I thought I would give some details of what I can recall.

My recollection is that this was to be show that was co-headlined by Elvis and Lou Reed. I think Reed was touring to support his LP New York. I have heard some say that Reed was actually to be the headliner and Elvis was the final opening act, but I really believe it was a co-headlining deal. The other acts on the bill were to be the Cowboy Junkies and Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians.

Anyways, in the days leading up to the show, Reed broke his leg. So at the last minute, the Violent Femmes (who are from Wisconsin) stepped in a replaced Reed. So the Violent Femmes played second to last and Costello closed the show.

If I recall anything more about the show, I will post. But anyway, I thought someone may want to add some of this information (like the other acts that played and had been scheduled to play but didn't) to the Wiki's gigography for the show. I don't know how to do the Wiki thing.

I was at the show as well and your recollections are pretty spot on. Cowboy Junkies opened, followed by Edie Brickell and New Bohemians. I was excited to see Lou Reed as I loved his just released "New York" album, but he did in fact break his leg shortly before the show, so the Violent Femmes stepped in for him. I do remember the first 3 or 4 songs they played were the opening tracks off of "New York," so that was pretty cool.

Here is the Elvis set. I got a tape of the show shortly after, so it must have been a pretty low generation. I've converted it to CD and mp3. It far from perfect, but definitely listenable with no real audience noise...

I knew I could not be the only on this forum who was there (it was a pretty big crowd). The Femmes' set was awesome and set the bar quite high for Costello, which I think he met.

Anyway, do you think you can mediafire or torrent your recording of that show? The wiki does not indicate a known recording.

Sorry this took so long. I've been trying to upload to MediaFire for the past week and I've had nothing but problems. But I think everything is good to go now:

Eventually. I'm in the long process of moving and have most of my stuff in storage. I'll do it, but certainly not in the foreseeable future...
