Maybe cause his voice wasn't as he would like he declined to have it archived.

That was painful viewing. Elvis' voice is shot. It was supposed to be solo but I reckon he changed it to the full band show to compensate - there's no way he would have got through it on his own.

I actually have heard EC really bad and this was still very enjoyable and fun set.

Maybe I'm just too much of a fan, but I was not that bothered by EC's voice. Wasn't as bad as his voice during the Chicago show, was it?

My WFUV-FM over-the-air capture (lossless) sounds awful. Full of static and distortion. My WFUV-FM internet stream capture (lossy) sounds great. I'll use the lossy version and put it on MediaFire. Most likely someone with a good FM antenna who lives in the north Bronx will upload a nice sounding FM version on DIME.

Maybe it was a Dylan reference?

Looks like there will be a lossless version. This was just uploaded on DIME:

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
Newport Folk Festival
Newport, RI, USA
2011-07-31

FM > Behringer UFO202 > Sound Forge 9 > Audacity > Flac frontend

This is a very good FM recording. Broadcast on WFUV-FM, Bronx, NY. More artists to follow. Samples attached. Enjoy.

EC's acoustic sounds out of tune on 'Why Doncha Love Me Like You Used To Do'.

I was there. I'd report in, but it looks like you all got to see it, or at least hear it. Elvis's voice indeed seemed pretty well shot, but he managed to come through in the clutch. A gust of wind knocked a plexiglass sound screen over onto Pete's drums at one point, after which they disappeared from the PA mix, although from where I stood they could still be heard direct from the stage. That got sorted pretty quickly. The Secret Sisters were lovely, both on their own and in their sit-in with Elvis. Glad to see you all heard the same surprising little lyrical change in the Hank Williams song from the one sister--I wasn't sure I could trust my ears. Scarlet Tide with Emmylou (and a new debt ceiling line replacing the anti-Bush Iraq war lines) was lovely, and the PLU finale was appropriately rousing.

But the most intense part of the day was Pete Seeger closing the show by leading the crowd in a singalong of Turn Turn Turn and Where Have All The Flowers Gone. There wasn't a dry eye in the house, or in my head.

The line in "Scarlet Tide" about "no money left to spend" has actually been in the song for a couple of years now. Yesterday when he got to it, I was struck by how relevant it was to current events.

Fun show. Agree about the voice and covering with the Imps but it wasn't like say the Tower of London show!

Continue to be amazed (in a good way) by the song selection. What was this a 50 / 50 split between self-penned and covers??

EC obviously likes all of the guest spots, especially when he's not on form

Guess I'll have to arrange an EU business trip for the end of the year if I want to see a solo show

I was enjoying Elvis Costello and the Imposters, who were joined by the Secret Sisters, Chris Thile and Emmylou. And before that, I was watching Wanda Jackson have a party. Chris Thile and Michael Daves tearing it up. And more.

Just ask Pete Seeger. He was everywhere at Newport, and contrary to his image as folk curmudgeon, he was sidestage for Wanda Jackson, Elvis Costello, Amos Lee, and many others who weren’t exactly pure folk musicians. At 92, he still has more energy that most 20 year olds, and an open mind.

Did anyone notice the shout-out from the audience for Secondary Modern after Cry, Cry, Cry?

The response from EC was: "Secondary Modern?!? That's a good call but I don't think we know that one. We know a lot of songs. We know about 150 songs but we don't have time to play them all for you today". Classic.

Is it out of the question...?

Expect Secondary Modern for the 4th leg of the US tour.

I was pleasantly shocked when he played it (along with Big Tears and Lovers Walk) at Nokia Theater in NYC in 2007.
