Been so harried & harrassed as of late, decided to treat myself to some "new" CD's...

#1: "Look Sharp" -- Joe Jackson, original vinyl had 11 tunes, A&M re- issue has 13 (2 bonus tracks, Don't Ask Me, and You Got the Fever, U.K. Singles, appeared respectively as b-sides of One More Time & Is She Really Going Out with Him?? ). Really an excellent debut album.

And I think E.C. could realte to Happy Loving Couples...pure vitriol!!

#2: "Subterranean Jungle" -- The Ramones. Okay, maybe I'm just re-living my childhood, but I've yet to find a Ramone's tune I actually hate. These guys are just plain, good ol' fashioned fun to listen to!! How can you NOT like a song entitled: Everytime I Eat Vegetables, It Makes Me Think of You ??

#3: "Imperial Bedroom" (Rhino Re-Issue) -- Haven't had time to listen yet, but I'm sure it will be inspiring!!

Can't quite compete w/ the rest of you lot.

Double vinyl of 'The World of Dolly Parton' Oh yeah! 49p from Oxfam. Bargain! Going through a classical phase at the mo' so more Strauss and Chopin, too.

I saw that one as well. They were in the bargain section, shrinkwrapped. I went to another shop, returned to have another look at it, and it was gone! grrrr.

I just realized that I haven't even listened to half of these. But, costellopunk, I did finally get to listen to the Raveonettes, and it's a very good album. Kind of short, though.

"Strays" by Jane's Addiction. I didn't purchase it--the CD was sent to my by Capitol, so I can do a review of it for knotmag.com. Anyone who loved Jane's back in the day will really dig this new album--despite the fact that Dave Navarro fucked up Red Hot Chili Peppers and is marrying Carmen "Skanktacular" Electra, my respect for him has risen. The man can play his ass off. Perry Farrell, as always, is in top form.

I'm also waiting patiently for the record company to send me "North". I LOVE this gig!

I use the downloads like radio. If I like it, I buy it. If I don't it only cost 24 cents to find out.

I did buy the new Warren Zevon, The Wind. And it is touchingly eloquent, a very fitting swan song to a great great songwriter.

I highly recommend it.

The VSS - Nervous Circuits (mid-90s goth/hardcore)
You and I - The First 7" (mid-90s emo, re-released)
Orchid - Dance Tonight, Revolution Tomorrow! (spastic punk, 10")
Atom and his Package - Making Love (collection of EPs and compilation tracks. brilliantly snarky synth-pop-punk like the Dead Milkmen with cheesy keyboards, but better. swirly blue vinyl)

Last week I bought Weezer Maladroit on vinyl, and also The White Stripes Elephant. The former sounds better on cd, but since elephant was entirely analog in the recording and mixing, the vinyl sounds AMAZING!

Just picked up This is Where I Belong: The Songs of Ray Davies and the Kinks. It's probably the best tribute album I've heard. Standouts are Ron Sexsmith's This is Where I Belong, Steve Forbert's Starstruck, Fountains of Wayne's Better Days and Ray and Damon Albarn doing a live version of Waterloo Sunset.

Hey GOOT- I love Set Me Free as well (in fact, my band covers it). Sadly, no one does Set Me Free on this album. I don't have the CD in front of me, but when I get home, I'll PM you with the track listing.

I love The Kinks. I should get that tribute album.

What other holes should I fill in my Kinks collection? I own Kinks, Kinda Kinks, The Kink Kontroversy, Face to Face, Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur, Lola, BBC Sessions, and To The Bone.

Blue Chair- Muswell Hillbillies is an essential Kinks release. The Kinks predated just about every trend that would eventually come down the pike, and Muswell Hillbillies is their excellent stab at country music (before the Byrds and Stones really went there). For the later stuff, I truly feel that Give the People What They Want is one of the best albums EVER. Every single song is outstanding and Davies was in fine form writing ballads, rock, and even a couple of good pop singles.
