The noun is fixed. Read my mind.

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Clairvoyance

Post by A rope leash »

Clearly, Laughingcrow has the will and ability to read a dog's mind from the vantage of a great distance. Too bad that the wrong page is being read.

Both "dust" and "atom" have been on the short list for noun fixing for quite sometime. The noun is neither of those, but I suppose, both of those might be the noun, in an adjectivial way.

Say "Hi" to the brother planet. It's coming in close!

Odd variables

Post by A rope leash »

It's a candidate for greatest thing ever: of it's category it might be a personal "favorite".

It's one of those things that really can't be valued, or posessed, although it might be an atribute of a posession.

It has always existed on this plane, and if it were to somehow go away, it would be sadly missed. But, it has always been here, and no doubt always will.

Dust on the brother planet, and possibly atoms.

It's pigeon (stool pigeon from from 'Green Shirt'). They have always been here, they are a personal favourite of mine - some people own them and they would be sadly missed by me if they went away!! :D

Some big hints

Post by A rope leash »

Ah, Gilli, it is not pigeon. Remember what I said about the noun's adjectivial value, and go back a read the clues again, even the clue that you so imperviously inserted into your last post...

Good question.

It is, in fact featured prominantly during Valentine's season. Oddy, it holds differing connotaions as well, such as anger.

But it can handle it.

PARTY TIME!

Post by A rope leash »

Way to go, Pip! All together now!

Oh i used to be disgusted
And now i try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
You know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain,
That's when i knew that i could not refuse.
And i won't get any older, now the angels wanna wear my red shoes.

I was watching while you're dancing away.
Our love got fractured in the echo and sway.
How come everybody wants to be your friend?
You know that it still hurts me just to say it.

Oh, i know that she's disgusted (oh why's that)
Cause she's feeling so abused. (oh that's too bad)
She gets tired of the lust, (oh i'm so sad)
But it's so hard to refuse.
How can you say that i'm too old,
When the angels have stolen my red shoes.

Oh, i said "i'm so happy, i could die."
She said "drop dead," then left with another guy.
That's what you get if you go chasing after vengeance.
Ever since you got me punctured this has been my sentence.
Oh i used to be disgusted
And now i try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
You know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
Red shoes, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.

How misleading. Red is not a noun -- at least it wasn't in this instance. It was strictly an adjective...

Please explain, Mr. Rope.

Technicalities

Post by A rope leash »

"Red" is a noun that refers to the long-wave end of the visilbe light spectrum. Of course, it is also an adjective, a fact that was brought out during the questioning.

The hounds found it, and that's the game. Maybe it was a little misleading, but the adjectivial question just wasn't asked, so I gave the hint.

Red is my favourite color, and is used as a noun in this sentence. The color of the blood in Nick Lowe's hand is red, and when we say red blood we use red as an adjective.

Sorry about the confusion, but red is not strictly an adjective.

Good show, everybody.

Ta-ta, now...

Apology accepted.

It still wasn't a noun though. You couldn't say "it was 'a red' ". Red on that end of the spectrum is still an adjective, of the noun "colour".

I'd rather appear a pain-in-the-ass pedant than say nothing...

Pendantic

Post by A rope leash »

One absolutely can say "it is a red".

Maroon is a red. Pink is a red. Purple contains red. I think here it is called a "direct object".

You can, but it didn't apply in this instance. Nick Lowe doesn't hold a red in his hands, he might hold a red guitar. It's only a noun of a colour, or if you're describing a type of red for example a scarlet red (which didn't apply here), or of something else that happens to be called "a red" or "red" besides a colour. But no, so it was an adjective.

I suppose you could say that every adjective is a noun...... of a word.

Okay, then

Post by A rope leash »

Red is in Nick Lowe's hand in the form a hue apparent to the blood and muscle. It could be argued that if he held a red guitar, then he held the hue of red, and therefore he held red in his hands.

But, I must admit, "red" as it applies to Red Shoes is an adjective.

I guess all shoes made in China are "red".

Seriously, I must be going...

Anyone can play...

Sure, Noise, all are welcome to play. I'll be busy with work this week, but go ahead, fix away.

First question: Is the noun commonly used as an adjective?

No, it is not commonly used as an adjective. Under very specific circumstances, it could be (but then most nouns can be used as adjectives if you try hard enough). It IS commonly used in another part of speech besides a noun, though.

Hints when they become necessary.

I'm sending the frequency. Can you hear the noise?
