I agree. It's been a great year for new music. There are albums I've enjoyed a lot, such as the latest New Pornographers disc and Spoon's Gimme Fiction, that probably won't even make it into my top ten, and there are still a few months left.Bad Ambassador wrote:It is really rather good. This year's been fantastic so far for new music, although I've never been one to subscribe to the 'oh, it's not as good as it used to be' ethic that you hear so much of these days.

Off hand, my Top 5 of the year would probably include Josh Rouse's Nashville, Sharon Jones & The Dap-King's Naturally, M. Ward's Transistor Radio... it's still early though, cause fall usually brings a lot of cool stuff
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

A melancholy, nostalgic, late-night sort of album. Echoes of Sinatra/Tony Bennett, hints of Roy Orbison, '50s and early '60s rock and roll. Big lush arrangements in places. A nice change from a lot of the other stuff I've listened to this year.

Technically I think Nashville was released last year. Mine would be something like this, with M. Ward up there as well:BlueChair wrote:Off hand, my Top 5 of the year would probably include Josh Rouse's Nashville, Sharon Jones & The Dap-King's Naturally, M. 1. Eels - Blinking Lights And Other Revelations
2. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
3. Sigur Rós - Takk...
4. Richard Hawley - Coles Corner
5. Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production Of Eggs

I don't have that, but I thought Welcome Interstate Managers was full of terrific, infectious pop songwriting.Goody2Shoes wrote:Fountains of Wayne's Out-Of-State Plates. Nice. I'd be interested to know what you think about the JWH re-issue. I really love that album and want the SACD version, but if it's a sonic disaster...Bad Ambassador wrote:

This arrived today.
The DVD 5.1 audio mix is breathtaking. The CD remix is a big improvement as well. Wish I could find an easy way to rip the 5.1 mix to MP3 format. Anyone know how to go about doing that? Will watch all of the added goodies and video later when I get a chance.
One word of warning - my internal combo CD/DVD drive doesn't seem to play very well with the DualDiscs. DVD is no problem whatsoever, but the CD side is a little fussy - Talking Heads - '77 imported just fine to iTunes, but the CD side of More Songs About Buildings And Food would only load on my external CD drive.
P.S. Had forgotten that Johnny Marr plays guitar on much of Naked.

Just got it today Chrille, so I have not yet been able to watch any of the live material. I think that Belew might feature in some of it - will let you know once I've had a chance to explore further.Chrille wrote:The Talking Heads set is out already? dang! I gotta get it!
How are the live performances! Is there any footage of Talking Heads w/ Adrian Belew (guitarist on the RIL album & tour)?
P.S. Took a peek at the video footage from Remain In Light and Belew is part of that band.

I broke my vow of chastity with:
Neil Young - Prairie Wind (inc. live DVD)
Magic Numbers
FF - as shown by Mug
Elbow - Leaders of the Free World
Only the first has arrived. Perfect for a bedtime listen (2 songs max!). Off I go...
Elbow are a band I liked via the superb Newborn, and then the absent Crow got me into them a whole lot more. This new one has had such good reviews, I really couldn't resist. This and MNs were all of £7 a piece on CD-WOW. The whole lot was only £33 there. Not bad at all.
No more shopping now till Christmas...

mug, I got the new FF disc as well. I am not wild about the single, "Do You Want To" (it may grow on me), but the album is a lot of fun. Not much different from their debut - maybe a bit more polished. But they have an incredible knack for memorable hooks and pull it off with such style.selfmademug wrote:Something beyond you?? I am shocked!
Otis I got that Magic Numbers one too-- I'm greedy and bad. Haven't listened to it yet. Tomorrow!
As for the Magic Numbers album, I'm a little wary of it after hearing it described by a friend as "Sesame Street covering The Eagles". Would be interested to hear what you think of it.

Not a CD really, but I was frustrated enough by the lack of Pernice Brothers lyrics on the web that I picked this up - all of Joe Pernice's lyrics (up until Yours, Mine & Ours) collected in one beautiful little volume. It would be boss if EC were to put something like this out.

"Crush the rabbit cage of my skeleton..."
As to FF, the single annoyed me at first but now I kinda love it because it is just so funny, and it is so baldly homoerotic, it's the most subversive thing on the radio. I sense they will have some cleaning-up to do on THAT one, when the time comes for Kidz Bop 9 (and I know you know what that is!).
As with the first album, however, the single is not gonna be my fave. I think this record gets more serious and pretty (e.g., Eleanor Put Your Boots On; Fade Together) but without losing any of the absurd humor and sexiness. It seems pretty rich to me, lyrically, and all those hooks and tempo changes are just frikkin addictive, no?

Wow, that "rabbit cage" reference didn't even cross my mind. It is a lovely little tome - great layout and beautiful typeface.selfmademug wrote:"Crush the rabbit cage of my skeleton..."

Yes I am (unfortunately) familiar with Kidz Bop.
Will probably take me a few more spins to decide what my favorite track is from the new FF, but "Evil And A Heathen" is so much fun it should be illegal.
