What are you listening to right now?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Football on Radio 5, and Darren Bent has scored again, meaning Dom, current leader of the league at work, will be having another good afternoon on the Fantasy front. Good result for United, though. Hang on, sorry, wrong thread.

...Up is a really good album, one of Gabriel's best...

Streets Of Love off The Rolling Stones new album.
Somewhat predictable, but nonetheless sounds like a soon-to-be classic Stones ballad.

100 % Johnny (Hallyday), Life à la Tour Eiffel

Includes the song " Sang pour Sang " (= 100 % = cent pour cent = in English "blood for blood"). Nice melody, pretty good lyrics. Translation looks challenging.

Otis "it" is what, "Orange juice" or Johnny ?

Thank you kindly. What about your own darkness (like, are you locked up in a lift) ?

Johnny, seeing as you couldn't hear the Orange Juice. My darkness is metaphorical, and comes from Edwyn Collins, who, coincidentally, was the singer and main writer in Orange Juice, though maybe you don't need me to tell you that. (Comes from the same song as the sig, you see.) Actually, my darkness is more literal than metaphorical. I do most of my posting at night.

Orange Juice made a change from my recent intensive Dylan programme, which I am now back on, with Live 1964. Splendid.

I suspect there are people who will think well, that's just extra curricular, it's not REALLY a new Bjork record. But nothing is outside Bjork's curriculum! I love her soundtrack to Selma Songs, it's probably my third fave after Vespertine and Homogenic. Still, an Amazon reviewer says 'not for the casual listener"! Anyway, here goes. First listen....

Reviews indicate it's 'difficult' (why, of course!) but also stunningly beautiful in places. What does the Mug indicate?

So far, a mix of classic Bjork haunting beauty, some of her tonal breathing a la Medulla, and some classically arranged stuff that has a better, more integrated relationship to Stravinsky or Bartok than Il Sogno has to Copeland. (She wrote, out of her ass.)

The polar and icy oceanic references and general aurora feel to this record (save the patently Japanese stuff) make it almost feasible as a soundtrack to the Pullman novels. Which she SHOULD write, come to think.

Ha! No I don't think it's Bjork who sucks, Honey. Four words for you (and how to spell them): IG. NOR. RA. MUS.

Ironically, in this Englishman's eyes you have spelt ignoramus incorrectly. Unless you have spelt it phonetically. I'm reserving my right to laugh Muggy because you may have put an American spelling.

I am now frantically checking that I have spelt every word correctly

D'oh! Guilty as charged!! Don't spose I could convince you I was just rolling my R's...? :D The ironic thing is, I made that mistake because I looked up how to divide the syllables and then didn't take out the misplaced 'r'! It never pays to be a pedant. Unless your name is Otis, perhaps...

As MBA pointed out elsewhere, it's unwise (and unfair, usually) to pick on people for typos, spelling or grammar. I thought I'd make an exception for someone who has called me ignorant-- still unwise!

However I stand by my defense of Bjork, one of the most brilliant artists of our time. I also stand by my pissiness over the dopey generalizations and even dopier dismissals that issue from a certain Canadian/Argentine 'round here....
