I knew the Storm could do it, and not only do it, but give a splendidly obscure ref to the Arnold Corns alternative of Hang Onto Yourself (which had better be on the 30th Ziggy reissue I am currently waiting for delivery of!), as well as showing off outrageously over the German 'Love You Till Tuesday', and clinch it with the closing line reffing Wednesday, which I'd clean forgotten.

Storm: the floor is yours, and whilst you're at it, why not pootle over to the footie thread and join the fantasy fun?

OK, this is a multi-choice question, so everyone can have a go.
Q. Following the last minute withdrawal of Morrissey as headlining act of the last night of Japan's 3-day Fuji Rock Festival 2004, the 40,000+ fans saw him replaced with:
A) a re-jigged line up that made The White Stripes the headliners, with the UK's Ash hastily moved to fill TWS's warm-up spot on the main stage
B) a second appearance of the fantastically fab franz ferdinand, who were one of the highlights of the festival, despite their 2:00pm start on the second day.
C) A second appearance of The Pixies, with Lou Reed making a guest appearance to mix Here Comes Your Man with his own Waiting For The Man
D) A Smiths cover band, flown in espeically from Ireland, fronted by a rather portly Morrissey-look-alike-from-500-yards, and backed by three musicians amply blessed with un-rockgodlike ugliness.

Tim(e) is correct.

The closing, headlining act of Fuji 2004 was in fact the previously unknown-to-anybody-outside-of-Dublin "These Charming Men". http://www.thesecharmingmen.com/
It was surreal, hilarious, a rip-off, and a well deserved slap in the face to the real Morrissey. I must admit, the 15,000 or so fans who stayed to watch made them feel really at home, after all, it wasn't the bands fault that a big name act couldn't be booked. And anyway, they were rather quite good, and even did some of the songs from M's new album . As one of my friends said "At least with these guys we'll get to hear the hits"

Noiseradio - keep a bag packed and your passport up-to-date. Your chance to play as closing act at Japan's major festival, in front of thousands of adoring Japanese and in the cool of the Naeba mountain air, may well come.

Over to you Tim(e)...

Ok, in keeping with the Japanese theme... way back when, a band called The Vapours had a hit with a catchy little tune called "(I Think I'm) Turning Japanese" - who is the person credited with having discovered this band?

Damn, you got there first!

Maybe they should have had a Bowie tribute act at Oxygen in Dublin! I'm not aware of any, but there must be some.

Great that FF impressed you. Are you posting elsewhere about other stuff at the festival? Would be good to read more with all those bands playing.

I will give you that purely on the fact that you mentioned The Jam... I always was of the mind it was Weller who was responsible ;)

I'll have to check the box set notes when I have more time, but it was alwasy BF who was associated with them, and they repaid the debt by copying the Foxton Patented Basssound.

Ok -

Let's stick with the Jam (this may be too easy for some of the fanatics here) -

On their first tour of the States, for what band was the Jam the opening act?

BWAP, you are awaiting the answer Blue Oyster Cult, are you not?

Actually, an error of detail in your question: this was on The Jam's second tour of the States. The complete gig list in the box set confirms: Oct 6-Oct 18 1977, 16 shows including 2 each in La, Boston and NY. Second tour was March 14-April 16 1978 and was much more extensive, including Toronto (Blue would have been there, but hadn't yet been conceived). The book says 'The band had struck up a co-management deal for the US. As a result of this The Jam ended up supporting a fellow band from the same management stable. The result was an unmitigated disaster - America, with their 20,000+ arenas, were just not ready for The Jam in 1978.' I'd love to see a video of that!

Have my question all ready. Hope you're around, BWAP!

Cool!

For a change, an EC question. This should only be answered from personal knowledge! Which song occurs the most times (counting appearances on both discs 1 and 2) on all the Rhino/Edsel/Demon 2CD EC reissues?

According to iTunes, I have 12 different versions of Watching The Detectives. Jesus, I might need to get out more.

Not these. I think WTD is only twice (MAIT disc 1 and AF disc 2). You need to say how many times the song occurs, and where!
