Post by Bob And Charlotte »

or i´m just amazed to hear it for the first few times?

What a charming and desolated gem of a song...
'And on the few times I rang to propose/There was a man there or so I suppose','For all of the courage that we never had/I'm just about'...

The song alone makes 'Brutal Youth' a most own for a Costello apprentice... one of the man´s finest hour IMHO

Brutal Youth is his best record. You can keep yer Imperial Model and King of Happy!! etc

JAG in particular is outstanding.

Yeah, it is.

Brutal Youth is a gem of a record. Really a great disc. In fact, I could go for listening to it right now.

Oh boy. Get ready for it. OK then? Here we go...

As excited as I was about Brutal Youth when it came out, I was less than impressed afterwards. A few good songs, but boomy production by Mitchell Froom. And I thought "Just About Glad" was a cliche Elvis song, one that someone else would have written as a parody.

Mind you, I can't find anyone else who agrees with me, which is fine. And I was happy to find versions of certain songs on the Rhino bonus disc that I preferred to the album cuts I already liked (namely You Tripped and Fave Hour). But the album only gets three out of five from me.

I await the tomatoes.

I didn’t really appreciate “Just About Glad” until I heard the live version on the Costello/Nieve box set. I agree with Wardo68 about Brutal Youth: great songs, horrible sound.

By the way, Hi. I’m new.

I've said it here before, You Tripped at Every Step is my all time favorite EC song. I think all the songs on BY are excellent, and they sounded great live at the time as well.

BY is REALLY GREAT and I missed it the first time around -> what a STUPID mistake. I dropped off the EC map after Spike but started coming back around ATUB but didn't give BY a good listening to until a couple years ago. BY is now my favorite EC album. LOL!

I love the sound of BY, especially on You Tripped... Although EC has denied it, it always felt like a concept record about maturity and responsibility.

Brutal Youth, in my opinion, is Elvis's best record too. His vocals are BEYOND perfect, and lyrically its only rival is Spike (but Spike sounds too much like robotic-crap to me).

I never cared for "Just About Glad" until recently. The repitition in it turned me off. That's sort of funny, considering "20% Amnesia" was my favorite song for two weeks (three weeks after "Sulky Girl" was my favorite song).

Bob and Charlotte, I remember an altercation between you and I about Brutal Youth. I hope you're listening to it because of that.

You Tripped, 20% are great songs, but what about 13 Steps? It features the Attractions and has that excellent fade out!

How about Still Too Soon to Know? Another great song. I'm going to stop here before I list every song on the album. . . .

I have to confess, I felt alot like Wardo at first about BY, but I didn't give it a chance. It definately grew on me.
And WOW, I just about flipped when I heard Just About Glad live! I really fell in love with the record after that.

(13 Steps is also a big fav of mine. EC's guitar solo is just so cool.)

WHAR: i remember very well our Brutal Youth conversation and that was surely the biggest reason for my curiosity upon that record. Mainly over '20% Amnesia'. Great song; Great album

BY as the 'heaviest' album, grows on you the most IMHO. The only song I don't really like is 20% amnesia...which I just think is too 'let's do an angry young man song', and the screaming on it isn't particularly endearing to me.

Don't forget the brilliance of Rocking Horse Road and All The Rage which I think contains the most elegant ending on the album
