The Perfect Weekend

Post by lapinsjolis »

Perfect weekend

Fresh air, music from the dead with lush lyrical prose,
Dreams of you distant and haunting as it all comes to a close,
I can still see your face, feel your touch, smell your skin,
You have no disgrace as with lipstick and laughter I hide my sin,
These memories crowd and stay in like an uninvited guest,
The perfect weekend starts with you and never lets me rest.

(Well put, sulkygirl.)

I love the alliteration in the line about "lipstick and laughter," the sharp way that line ends, and the wistful mood of the whole. There is a sense of devoured days recalled in reverie.

It is a beautiful poem, LJ.

Gracias miles queridos.

I'll err on my side to say that gif meant you like it Sulkygirl!

Mr. Misery-Such thoughtful commentary-I vote you in as editor, I'm sure your poetry would surpass it, if you weren't too shy to post.

Thanks Gillibeanz! Here is another for you.

Beautiful Lie

Flattering phrases whispered from lips eager for a kiss

There's not a veiled reference that I have failed to miss

A moral suspension for a night filled with bliss

You're first in the mirror and first on your list

I smile very sweetly as my lips brush your cheek

The breathless moves of the game make you so weak

You think me a fool for your vanity is high

I only indulge you in your beautiful lie

Wow. I like this second one especially. The mirror seems to be the center, with all the confusion between the two figures, and the back-and-forth negative of 'not failing to miss'...

Thanks!

Hey Mug - Thank you for you commentary. Your opinion is highly valued. I think this is a perfect forum for a secret thread. Almost no one looks at it! Here's one with a nod to Hemingway-Mr. Misery loves Hemingway.

Some things ring clever at least it's a start
You have and you hold you cast your part

You have what you want you have what you need
A beautiful angel to love and mislead

Your happiness hinges on her joy and despair
You delight in the latter cruel and aware

Outlines of lovers dim to a slow fade
The one that remembers is merely a shade

The day stings your eyes and never a thought
That the sun also rises on the girl you forgot

Lapins, that's great. And here I thought Misery loved company. (I think I've beat that quip into the ground, I'm going to retire its jersey number and hang it from the rafters.) I wish I had any poetic impulse at all; I feel like I should, because I think in images and parallels and metaphors a good deal of the time, but alas, it's not my verbal 'mien'.

That was especially good to read as I am having a crap night, without warning. Well, I can't complain realy.

Do you do those illustrations?!?!

Boy I wish I did the drawings. Then I'd be rich! It's Josh Agle aka Shag. If you invest in art (I do VERY mildly) he is almost always an instant return. I would illustrate them as well if I could get this blasted scanner to work! Misery does indeed love company, just whose I'm not sure. Post something on this thread in the way of poetry if you get the inspiration. This can be the 'shy poet thread'. I hope your night improves.

Here one for those awake:

Ode to insomnia

Drifting and drowsy the hours never cease
Dreaming of dreaming longing for peace

Thoughts change shape then they descend
Nightmarish reveries that have no end

Lethargic and scattered rest is in vain
The sleepless surrender to my muted pain

Awake and defeated, dreading the dawn
Have I lived forever or waited that long?

Laps, the images really enhance the poems (not to take away from them).

Here's one:

You make me hungry for success
then I could chase another dress
it's not that I would dare
or that I'm out to use you
just that I'd be square I confess
to think that beauty is so rare
and not peruse the menu

Bambooneedle you are the bachelor du jour, aren't you?. Fall deeply, importantly and all consumingly in love, por favor. Pour vous mon ami:

Jaded beauty and grace are tonight's prize,
The hope of true feeling goes unrealized

The faces are so lovely but all look the same
Just different numbers and hard to catch names

Not even the comforting sorrow of love lost in vain,
Living in a bitter distraction tired of the game

The exquisite and rare is hard to find
Maybe I'm seeking something that's mine

<img src="http://prod.bsis.bellsouth.net/coDataIm ... ermore.jpg" width="470" height="350">

Next I expect a 'I found my Beatrice' type of poem. There's a Dante lurking inside of your 'too cool for love' attitude, I'm sure of it.

Poppet-I have quite a few tee shirts with Shag art. This the one I have with a cat on it:

Hey, Laps. You are quite the poet. I knew you could write good short stories, but this stuff is breathtaking, especially "Beautiful Lie." The pics are perfect!

As you know, I've turned lots of friends onto Shag's art because of you. Were you inspired by the pictures, or did the words come first?

I'm knocked out by the one accompanying "Beautiful Lie." It says it all.

MORE PLEASE!!

Beautiful stuff.

I don't drop in a lot here, must be "poetry" envy. Like Gilli, I think in metaphors, etc., but have never been any good at anything other than Haiku.

Norman Brain-how very sweet! Thank you. A lot is
from the art itself and some is from life in general.
You can use your imagination of how much of each. Shag is doing some things for the Tiki lounge at Disneyland. If you want a print run to the Shagmart a new one is coming out the 14th. . .I think.

Thou shalt not express what is not worthy of feeling,
It's so hard to discern when she's so appealing

The engraved invitation created by your desire
For unfounded jealousy, scorned lover for hire

She seems so familiar and yet she's unknown
A dark, secret fantasy that you keep at home

You want to contain it yet it always escapes
You're out of you mind with this glorious hate

Thou shalt not covet nor kill, you want to heed
But your only delight is in watching her bleed

<img src="http://prod.bsis.bellsouth.net/coDataIm ... 0covet.jpg" width="310" height="389">

That came out very dark! Lapin nior.

Is there a morning after you leave?
Or just an illusion solitude weaves

The light and the warmth seem so forced and fake
False luminescence that loneliness wakes

Can I be myself again or there is no reprieve?
The insistent longing, my soul is unsheathed

I'll hide it silence, I'll lock it away
I'll be as deceptive as the start of the day

<img src="http://prod.bsis.bellsouth.net/coDataIm ... inlamp.jpg" width="352" height="471">

Are you being sincere A Rope Leash? Well it doesn't
matter. I always think of you when I see this
painting and of days not all that distant in the past.

The archetype hidden from view.
Was the very first glimpse of you.
Not forgotten but romanticized,
By other hands for ready eyes:

<img src="http://prod.bsis.bellsouth.net/coDataIm ... tailf3.jpg" width="425" height="400">

A Mark Ryden this time I think you'd really love the
whole of this one Mr. Leash!

Sulkygirl-Thank you. No need or poetry envy the cure
is in writing some. Try your hand at it and besides Haikus count!

LJ, some brief comments on your wonderful poems:

"Beautiful Lie." I can imagine Elvis Costello putting this to music, such lines as "A moral suspension for a night filled with bliss/ You're first in the mirror and first on your list" would come naturally to him.

Poem inspired by Hemingway: I noted the allusions to To Have and Have Not, and The Sun Also Rises, and the bull and gun in the Shag illustration. Favorite line: "A beautiful angel to love and mislead."

Ode to Insomnia: you capture the torment of being slumberless. "Lethargic and scattered, rest is in vain/ The sleepless surrender to my muted pain."

And in the next one: "The exquisite and rare is hard to find/ Maybe I'm seeking something that is mine." I agree.

One of the marvelous things about poetry is that each person can take away something different from it, reactions and perspectives are unique. My own special favorites here are your first poem and the very latest one, but all of them contain something beautiful and memorable.

SULKY: Give it a go....I bet you could write a wicked poem!! Im not much good at it either, but I write for myself so it doesnt matter - im not looking to publish a book on poetry! It doesnt matter if its not 'high brow' stuff as long as you enjoy doing it we will enjoy reading it! Isn't that right folks? :D

LJ, do you crank these out as quickly as it seems you do? I'm wildly jealous, but glad the talent went to such a nice person.

For someone who reads and writes a fair amount, I'm horribly slow to understand words! Anything tricky or layered just takes me forever, I'm like a dyslexic in a house of mirrors... oh well.

Please keep posting these, and Miz, please keep commenting. It's so nice to have you here.

Gilli-Right!

Mug-Thank you for the kind words. I do churn them out like sausage. I'll never be a really good writer because I have no patience and hate the dreaded rewrite! Good writing takes time and a preciseness that is torturous to me.

The song midnight sings to the blackest of skies
Lives a short while then it so sweetly dies

To hear it you must not cling to the day
It moves in your soul but it never stays

Born of the silence it breathes in the gloom
Faceless and strange plays the shadowy tune

It reaches for you but you must not give in
It is in your ending that it dreams to begin

<img src="http://prod.bsis.bellsouth.net/coDataIm ... llmoon.jpg" width="336" height="428">

It gets so routine this falling from grace
Sin has no flavor when it loses it's taste

A trace of sanctity that hangs in the air
Belongs not to me, I wish I could care

The encounter can not thrill
Not deadly enough this morbid ill

In an unwelcome absolution strained would be reparation
Lost to indifference virtue enjoys it's endless vacation

The Beats

Post by A rope leash »

Lapins,

Some poets believe in the absolute sanctiity of the first draft. That's because they're good, like you.

This take may be off-kilter, but instead of "birth-copulation-death", this stuff seems to be "birth-death-copulation". It doesn't quite read that way, but it feels that way. Dreamy, too.

A Rope Leash-That is awfully kind of you. Sex after death hmmm? Perhaps it stems from the ecstasy shaking this mortal coil promises. Or I'm very odd indeed. Thank you for post-I'm speechless-for once.

A Rope Leash-You cynic. Loving eternally is the only way to go. Don't limit yourself to romantic affection which is often one part attraction one part opportunity. Don't you have family member, friend or pet that you will love forever? I just know you do.

The veil has been lifted the secret revealed
It still is a haze, to me it is concealed

Did you really leave or vanish from my sight
For you live within me and sleep with me at night

You have not departed now you share my breath
You learned to love so stealthily, quietly in death

I have always known you from before I came to be
You're my second nature you're more myself than me
