No, Moody, although I've posted on my share of semicomatose boards, that's not one of them.

As for the Flamin' Groovies, I'm definitely a fan. I like the Sire Records period especially, but there's a lot to be said for the early garage band sound as well. "Slow Death" is one of the best rock and roll songs ever!

SoLikeCandy wrote:I bought "Here, My Dear" by Marvin Gaye. It's the album he made that was mandated by a judge to pay his ex-wife--she would get the advance and all the royalties. Gaye loved the hell out of woman, and hated her just as much--and each emotion shows in the music. Frighteningly beautiful--possibly better than "What's Going On". It was panned when it was released, but it was ahead of its time...check it out, y'all.
This album so suits the cd format. Its original release died because the the contraint of having to flip to seperate vinyl albums ruins the mood. I agree with you, this is a more timeless cohesive statement than What's Going On. Another excellent Gaye release is this the Live At The London Palladium , the full version of Got To Give It Up is worth the price alone, never mind the incredible show.

taz wrote:...after listening to some Bob Dylan as a teenager I finally picked up Blood on the Tracks (Blonde on Blonde was like 30 bucks, not quite yet Bob).

I definitely enjoy it, and will be looking at picking up other copoies of his stuff.
Blood on the Tracks is a fine place to begin your appreciation of Dylan's wondrous catalouge. The next step need not require an investment anywhere near $30 either. You could probably find John Wesley Harding, Desire, Slow Train Coming, New Morning or Planet Waves for not all that much, and any of them would be a logical next step.

Actually, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits is a good buy, since it has some of the best of his early output, and if you don't mind live albums, maybe you can find Before the Flood at a good price.

Thanks Hungup! The tape I had in high school was his greatest hits, and actually I think that might have put me off of him for awhile. After hearing those songs so many times on that cd and then hearing them periodically for the next ten years here and there, kinda grates on the nerves. I really look forward to his more 'obscure' stuff.
A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. Do you think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a fuckin' cross? It's kind of like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on.

The thing is, the hybrid SACDs (playable in any player) out now are WAY better sounding than those 'nice price' CD's of yesteryear. It'll cost you a few extra bucks (only a few), and are MUCH more worth it. Not all the Dylan albums are out yet in this remastered format, but most of the great albums are.

Franz Ferdinand, which is my new obsession, thanks to Mug.
Sondre Lerche's new album, which sounds like a lot like his last album (good).
TV on the Radio, which I don't really like that much. Anyone willing to convince me to give it another try?

With a name like this, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, how could they be bad? Thanks for the tip, must check them out. The Franz Ferdinand album is a good one, a real grower.

I've heard Franz Ferdinand described as the new Strokes. Are they really all that great? I haven't heard a note yet, but the comparison to the Strokes (great for about 2 minutes before you get bored of the CD) puts me off.

I got a phone call at 6am yesterday asking would I like to have the day off work. No fool I, I took the phone off the hook in case they changed their minds, sent the kids to daycare and school as usual, and had a glorious day ALL BY MYSELF!!!!!! I drank coffee and read the paper ALL BY MYSELF!!!!! And I got to go shopping ALL BY MYSELF!!!!! I got Franz Ferdinand, based on recommendations here, also Chet Baker Sings, also an ELO double best-of (for the man of the house, but I will not apologize for enjoying it as well, as Mr. Misery says I don't have to, and besides, I have much, much worse in my collection). Also, Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection (no apologies there, either).

Then I went to lunch ALL BY MYSELF!!!! Then I went to a movie ALL BY MYSELF!!!! I really was all by myself, too; I was the only one in the theatre.

It was a great day.

damn, G2S, that sounds HEAVENLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't even go to the bathroom ALL BY MYSELF. I mean, of course, I can, but not alone. No, wait...I just can't seem to get the room to myself. I always have guests, no matter what.

G2S, that's great-- I know what an incredible luxury that is. Though maybe it's really a necessity, but one that's easily denied?

So glad to see the buzz increasing on FF here. For complex reasons  I do not have this damn record yet, only a handful of tunes from it. Soon, though. 8) It's just out here, I think; I saw it over the weekend.

I will prevail upon Spooky to post a picture or two from the show I saw in February....

I just got the LOST IN TRANSLATION soundtrack yesterday but haven't opened it yet-- tonight!

400, or more, times better than the Strokes, who are OK, but limited. FF have a certain Strokes influence, but so much more besides. The LP gets better by the week. Stuart Maconie compared them to Wire, which figures from the little I know of Wire. Any Wire specialists here?

Poor Mug, she turns MBA onto FF and she hasn't even heard the LP yet! She has, though, had the immense privilege of seeing them live, which is more than I'll get given the total sell-out status of their May tour. Swings and roundabouts.

If anyone wants to sample their brilliant single, Take Me Out, PM me, and I'll take you out. What exactly is a 'cross hair' anyway? Can LC fill us in on it being a Glaswegian term?

"Crosshairs" are the x/y axis in a gun sight, so here related to "just a shot away from you." How nice to live in a country where the name of every part of a gun is not household vocabulary!

I suppose I can live a few more days without this record, but after that I will surely expire...

Yeah, people in Glasgow don't use cross hairs to assasinate people...much easier to use a broken pint glass.

Blue - all the comparisons of FF to early Talking Heads or the 80s dundonian band Orange Juice are about right. Plus Terry Wogan get's a mention on one track!

Did you see the interview with him on Parkinson Gilli? Parkinson skirted around the toilet thing quite neatly, then GM went on and on about it....you'd think he want to forget about that!

I wonder if his idea to distribute all his music from now on for free will work? I can't see that many people donating money to charity in good faith when they buy his new stuff....even though it seems like a good idea!

I don't know whether Id like to download new stuff for free...does that mean the end to inlays and gem-cases? It would ruin the thrill of buying music, if new albums were just writable CDs with my writing on them!

CROW: I missed him on Parkinson! I turned over at the exact time the interview finished! I guess now he's out of the closet he doesnt care, - it's usually the record companies that want to keep all these things under wraps incase it affects sales. Shame about him being gay though - what a waste!!!

I really rate him as a songwriter performer and singer - hes come a long way from his Wham days! There are some really good tracks on his new album, - so far my favs are 'Amazing' and 'Precious Box' - they really get into your head and get your feet tapping.
