Thanks, cos I've been wondering how the setlist has progressed 'on the continent' and have been too lazy to research. OK, Sleep of the Just has gone, but boy is that a good setlist. I think I would need cardiac attention after that opening five. It's almost inconceivably brilliant. Actually, I mean the opening seven, if not the whole shebang, but what I'm referring to is the fact that the opening trio I saw in London now has Brilliant Mistake, Other End and Long Honeymoon wedged in it, three of my absolute favourites.

Right, Birmingham it is, then. Please let there still be tickets...

Laughing Cow....Toledo was indeed good! Elvis finger picked it while slapping the guitar rythmically giving a great jazzy touch. The concert in general was great.....two detractors....1) The hall was kinda cheesy and did not have a great ambiance . 2) Most of the fans where duds, not very many of them were really aquainted with all of the material.

BIG HIGHLIGHT: During Deep Dark Truthfull Mirror, he invited all to join him in front of the stage, and performed the rest of the concert with everyone (who dared) singing along. He was joking around a lot and having a ball. over 2 and a half hours of music and a think he even had a rough voice night, but fought through it. He really kept giving and giving all night long. He must be happy!

My second highlight was during the 2nd encore when I screamed Inch By Inch, and got it...! I had a good hint when he pulled out the hollow body.....he also played my other "Dark Horse" favorite...Home Truth...although he botched a chord.

So were you pretty sure the hollow body meant Inch By Inch, and can an official setlist confirm it was planned, or did he do it just for you? He stuck to the one accoustic guitar in London, so I'm jealous.

Bollocks, only Upper Tier left in Birmingham, not sure I can justify that one.

Otis...he pointed to the hollow body with a question mark on his face...."hey should I jam on this thing?" type of look...then everybody screamed and he grabbed it....I doubt that he played for me, I think it was planned. But who knows? Right after I shouted it out, he formed a B Minor, so I knew I was in for a treat. Some other bloke shouted out for I want You, but to no avail. He shrugged that one off with a grin....

I think he did play it for you, Cope!

I was wondering about That Girl Is Gone. Should it be That Day Is Done?

Otis...maybe he played it for me to shut the bald guy dressed in weird clothes up. He also sang to a guy in the audience "that is why, that I must hesitate, because I still have that other girl in my head"....with a smirk on his face.....now that was pretty funny too.

i should've taking my shirt off, then i would've known.

yes, when elvis beckons we all know what must be done.
sounds like a lovely evening.

Cope: you were too excited about Inch By Inch and Fire Betty to get back to us about That Girl Is Gone, but what is it? It clearly ain't a mistake, as it's listed on the EC home page for the Granada gig. Can you or anyone elaborate?

I think it might be a mistake that someone's copied and pasted from site to site...That day is done maybe? I hope I'm wrong and it's some cool rewritten version of TDID... :D

Otis...there was ONE song I didn't know...I think it's new...it's about some dude who loses his girlfriend...he said it took place in the 18th Century...that's the song I think....but then again, I was stoned out of my mind.....I'd never heard the tune before....

Cool! New song = new album!!!

18th century eh? I saw Richard Thompson a few months back, and he sang an 18th century Italian canto...woz brilliant...I hope it's along those lines, you cannae beat a bit o' lyre 'n' lute (the medieval equivalent of drum'n'bass  ).

Hey Cope, do you think Elv recognises you from previous gigs? You must have stood out from the presumably rather staid Danish audience (or was that just Birmingham) with your leathers and purple scarf, singing along in a stoned stylie.

The confusion is resolved elsewhere, and came about at my end through not knowing For The Stars, cos the song is No Wonder, from there. He also prefaced it in Birmingham with some witty lines, I think after someone had called for Oliver's Army, about not playing his older songs, but playing instead a song set in the 1850s (I think that's what he said), which figures in terms of the transport and clothing. It's a lovely song. Would like to hear a boot of Elvis singing it.

There's a really good site, 'sing365', which has pretty well the lyrics to every pop song ever, with artists all listed alphabetically, which is a good help here:

No Wonder Lyrics
Artist(Band):Elvis Costello

I stole a glance at my reflection,
Though these days I tend to hurry by.
How pale the rose of my complexion,
How strange the knowing look that's in my eye.
But when the springtime was ablaze,
You took my hand, you held my gaze.

There is no wonder there,
I learned my lesson well,
No need to wonder where that girl has gone.

There is a secret no one knows,
I set my face, I changed my clothes

I dreamed I stood as you were passing,
Just as the horse-drawn carriage sped away.
Of petticoats in puddles dragging,
And my highbutton boots were splashed with clay.

But when the summer was in flame,
You broke your word, denied my name.

There is no wonder there, etc.

But as the winter drags along,
It blurs your sense of right and wrong.

There is no wonder there, etc.

Otis ...I seriously doubts he recalls me....although I did indeed meet him backstage a couple of years ago in Copenhagen, and had a little talk with him.....he was actually a very nice and engaging person. I recall that I was suprised that he would even talk to a "regular Joe" like me....although I maybe don't look like a regular Joe....I am. He asked "what the hell are you doing here in Copenhagen???" I responded by saying...."the pussy"....*this was of course when I had just left my ex wife and was stranded in Denmark*.....  However distorted I was, I still don't think he remembers me, as he probably meets thousands of people who are more memorable than myself.

Otis,
Check out the 'totally meltdown' boot, he played it way back in 2001:

Actually I wrote that. This is one of the few EC boots I don't have. Anyone out there who has it want to trade with me for it?
