Official National Ransom Chords Thread

Post by when i was cruel »

Pretty self explanatory, preferably if someone could work out Jimmie and Josephine then that would be awesome, I'll get you started on Josephine,

Capo on 4
run on A 2 pull off 2 pull off etc
It's not the days when you leave me, but all I fear are the nights.

Can we just make this the Official EC Chords thread? We've got three EC chords thread (one a dedicated Ransom/sack) in the first two pages of this forum.

THAT'S NOT THE PART OF HIM YOU'RE LEAVING

D
I have a friend
She's just a friend
...............G
I tried to comfort and defend
................................................D
I gave her what you might call advice
...................................................E.........A
But nothing like that comes without a price
...................D
The rumour was a cruel surprise
....................G
And she dissolved before my eyes
.................................................G/f#.....Em
I offered my hand and hers and mine entwined
........................................................................A...................D
I thought about back then when I wished that she had been mine

............................G......G/f#.....Em
There's no use in shedding any tears
..........................D........................
He's no good to you the way he is
G........G/f#......Em...............A7
He's beyond forgiving and believing
.................D
Half of his heart is torn like paper
.........................G.........G/f#......Em
It's sweet as the syrup from the maple
............................A..........................D
But that's not the part of him you're leaving

A CONDEMNED MAN

Am
Judge said, "Son, you better say your prayers
-------------------------------F------E
Got a noose that fits you and some gallow stairs
----Am---Am/g--------------------E
And by this time tomorrow you won't be alive
Am---------Am/g----F
Soon we'll be giving you 10,000 volts"
E---------------------------Am
And I said, "Make that twenty-five"

The firing squad have got me right in their sights
Got me strapped up tightly with some dynamite
And I hear the executioner has got a brand new kink
He's giving me cyanide to breathe and strychnine to drink

----F-----C/b--Am
So dress me in chains and bind me in shackles
----F--------C/b--Am
The last thing you'll hear is my cold-hearted cackle
----F------C/b---Am----D-------G
The last thing you'll see is my twisted leer
------C---C7----F---------E-------------Am
I'm a condemned man and I'll never get out of here

----G----------D-------------F---------C
The searchlight's sweeping up from the prison tower
----G--------D------------F---------C
The clock is creeping up to the midnight hour
----G--------D-------F-------F------F---------C
Outside they're wailing, "Repent, repent, repent, and believe"
-------C7--------F----------------------E
There's a telephone ringing but no chance of reprieve

Am
All you straight-shooters and God-fearing dolts
------Am----Am/g----F-------E
Can be scared rigid by electrical volts
---F--C/b---Am--------D-----G
But I can't be killed by any regular means
---C------C7----F-------E---------------------Am
Or I'll come back to haunt you and visit your dreams

NATIONAL RANSOM

A................................G.............D
Running pell-mell and harum-scarum
Running as hot as they do or dare
Stick out your tongue
And drink down all the venom
From Cut-Throat Cuthbert
And Millicent St. Cyr

D
From the real old Macau
...........G
To the new False Americas
..........D
In the liberated territories
....C......................G.........C........G........C......G........C...................D
Unusual suspects shake down, shake down, shake down various dubious characters

A...............................................G..............D
Mother’s in the kitchen picking bones for breakfast
Boiling them down by the bushel and the score
Pull out your thumb and count what’s left of your fist
There’s a wolf at the window with ravening maw

D
Did you find how to lie?
G
Did you find out just how to cheat?
D
The elite bleat, their obsolete
C
But are your prospects?
G...C......G.....C...G..C
Exact, perfect object
...............D
Now, if you’d only genuflect

D......................C
They’re running wild
........C/B.........Am
Just like some childish tantrum
Dm............................................G
Meanwhile we’re working every day
Paying off the National Ransom

Back to AGD

and repeat for the rest of the song.

All I can work out on Josephine so far is:

The snitch, the snoop the tattle tale

POOR BORROWED DRESS

NB: I trust someone will correct these lyrics for me.

A..................................................................................E
A friends who painted heart and landed her as dress a well
E..........................................................................A
At last a proud and perfect sons at least start to swell
A.....................................................................D
Swaying in the swans turns to poker dots and pearls
E........................................................................A
Hearts as hard as punishment knives as dim as candles

D....................A.....................D....................A
It's a question of the voice of which you will attempt
D...................................A....................E
The one that's made to flatter you the other to defend
.......A...............................................................D
You took her down immediately and made her confess
E...................................................................A
Shame of the wearing of that poor borrowed dress

Actually just figured out the intro it is a Cadd9 032033 and start on the 3 then hit the 2 and switch til you feel like it then it's some F's and G's and a run on a D yeah still figuring it out, I think we need a Jimmie chord in here, but yes Jeremy this is a final thread lol

from the other thread: i've over simplified here, but this works a bit, kinda, sorta...

JIMMIE STANDING IN THE RAIN
Dm
Third-Class ticket in his pocket
Edim....................................A
Punching out the shadows underneath the sockets
Dm........................ Edim................Dm
Tweed coat turned up against the fog

Dm
Slow coaches rolling o’er the moor
C#dim
Between the very memory
......................A
And approaches of war

Dm.........................Gm
Stale bread curling on a luncheon counter
Dm.............................Gm
Loose change lonely, not the right amount
Dm............................Gm
Forgotten Man of an indifferent nation
Dm ...................................Gm
Waiting on a platform at a Lancashire station
Dm .............................. C#dim
Somebody’s calling you again
.................Gm
The sky is falling
................ Dm................Gm Dm
Jimmie’s standing in the rain

if anyone elses hands are as concrete as mine, here's the trick w. c#dim.
basically, play a D chord, then move it down one string and put your little finger on G (third fret) on the high E string.

I just checked that and all seem to be correct, except for a few omissions, which I've filled in here:

E...........................D..........A......E........D......A....D
Maybe you'll recognize in time
E.............................D.........A......E........D......A....D
Maybe one day you will discover
E.......................D........A......E........D......A....D

Thanks Jeremy. Your additions are good. However, I notice another chord after the

E -------------- C#m-- F#m7

line. I'll correct the post above.

The Spell That You Cast

Ab7/Db.....Bb7....Fmaj7sus/Bb

......Bb
The spell that you cast
................Bb7.........Bb
Seems to be wearing off fast

(The spell that you cast)
...........................Bb7.........Bb........F
Come back baby, cos I don't think that I can last

(The spell that you cast)

.......Bb/D.....Cm7
And I wonder whether
.....Bb/D......................Cm7
You got some other kind of lover
......Eb/G........F
That you like to please
Eb/G.........F
Better than me

.. Ab7/Db
I don't think I can take it
Bb7
How am I going break it?
Fmaj7sus/Bb
.......The Spell That You Cast
Fmaj7sus/Bb
.......The Spell That You Cast

F.............................. Eb ...............
Jimmy come quickly ‘cos I feel quite sickly
Bb/D....Cm7
(Oh the spell that You cast)
F........................................ Eb
You're like a gangster's Molly with a cannonade volley
Bb/D....Cm7
(Oh the spell that You cast)
Bb/D....Cm7
(Oh the spell that You cast)

Notes:

You can do a sort of Chuck Berry style vamp on the Bb chord in the verses.

That chord: Fmaj7sus4/Bb (or, if you like, Bbsus2add#11)

..||---------|---------|---------|-------
..||----0--- |---------|---------|-------
..||---------|---------|---0-----|-------
..||---------|---------|---0-----|-------
..||----0----|---------|---------|-------
X ||---------|---------|---------|-------

The Bb on the A string is optional, if you find it too hard.

Five-foot flood when the waters hit
Six feet deep, the eternal pit

Seven prayers and seven pleas
To eight imagined deities
Cat o' nine tails
Cat of nine lives
Brides turned into old wives tales
Your complexion colours then it pales

Watched that video and it actually starts on the Am, then goes to the Dm. If you want to play it with the capo, just take my chords up from Em to Am:

Yes Paul I do have it written out, and Voice In The Dark doesn't really have any guitar it's essentially a shot at a early Buddy Holly song.
