Elvis & The Imposters on new(?) Jenny and Johnny bonus track

Post by anewman35 »

I got this yesterday from the Jenny and Johnny (Jenny Lewis & Johnathan Rice) mailing list:
Starting today when you pre-order Jenny And Johnny's debut album, "I'm Having Fun Now" on iTunes you will get the exclusive bonus track "The Highs And Lows Of Being #1". This track is extra special because Jenny and Johnny are backed up by none other than Elvis Costello And The Imposters!

This track will no longer be available as of 8/31 - so make sure to order your copy now.
On their website (http://www.jennyandjohnnymusic.com) is this:
“I’m Having Fun Now” is available for pre-sale on Itunes today. if you choose to pre-order the record on Itunes, you will be given an unreleased song : “The Highs and Lows of Being Number One.” The song features Elvis Costello and the Imposters. It marks the first time Elvis Costello has ever played lead guitar on someone else’s song. It was recorded in just a few takes in the winter of 2008, and is considered to be the first Jenny and Johnny song.
The link to preorder on iTunes is http://itunes.apple.com/preorder/im-hav ... d386848427

Interestingly, this same song was a Japanese bonus track on Jenny Lewis's last solo album, "Acid Tongue". It's not clear if it's the same version or not.

Was there a Japanese release for Jenny's album? It's not listed on HMV Japan or do you mean a digital release?

According to Amoeba's Facebook page, EC was in the audience for Jenny and Johnny's appearance at Amoeba in L.A. on August 31 (the day before the Secret Sisters show, also in L.A.).

I didn't even realise this was a bonus track! I've been playing this record for days and Highs and Lows is the track I keep coming back to. I thought they were just aping the Faragher/Thomas feel! That explains some things...

(extract)

......this session is interesting, with simple acoustic guitars and the two voices it works surprisingly well. There’s a small touch of piano as well on “Switchblade”. In the interview, the pair talked about how the project came into existence, why the album title is what it is, and doing some work with Elvis Costello. It’s one of the better artist interviews I’ve heard recently, though things do get a bit awkward when the interviewer goes off on his love for Costello’s TV series “Spectacle”

According to a discussion on a Rilo Kiley message board, it's a different version.
