I managed to obtain a copy of 'A Colbert Christmas' yesterday and (although it is not up to the highest US comedy standards of 'Third Rock From The Sun'/'Simpsons'/'Mash' etc) thought it was quite good fun.

I particularly like Mr Costello's musical contributions (the fine TAMWTTBI and 'Jingle men' at end) as well as the pipe.

STEPHEN COLBERT & ELVIS COSTELLO
Much Worse Things to Believe In

Not strictly a contender for the top spot, but I'm including it anyway. A Colbert Christmas , Stephen Colbert's US TV special, features a host of memorable moments, from Willie Nelson's reefer-themed Christmas carol ( Let Not Mankind Bogart Love ) to Jon Stewart's creditably tuneful paean to religious diversity ( Can I Interest You in Chanukah?) . But the true highlight is arguably this sappy duet with Elvis Costello. From a comedian who specialises in hard-nosed satire, it's surprisingly heartwarming.

Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

I FINALLY saw parts of this on Christmas Day. Willie Nelson, YOU are my hero.
Like me, the "g" is silent.

I think that the Stephen Colbert and Elvis duet of "There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In" is fantastic. What a terrific song. It is so hard to believe that EC did not have a hand in writing it. The lyrics remind me of "St. Stephen's Day Murders", or "Put you Big Toe in the Milk of Human Kindness", a little.

Slowly, through the years, we might be able to compile a full Elvis Costello Christmas album.

So far, we have:

St. Stephen's Day Murders
There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In
Winter Song
Baby, It's Cold Outside (Live w/Anne Sophie von Otter)
North (?)
Still (?)
(What's So Funny 'Bout) Paece, Love, and Understanding? (need to find an acoustic live version)

What Else??

Interview: Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne

(extract)

You had a big holiday season. The L.L.Bean commercial. Recently you composed music for the Colbert Report holiday special. Whatwas that experience like?

For the commercial they just used the song- that was nice to see that particular song get that exposure because it wasn't really a song that had been played on the radio much, "Valley Winter Song." The Colbert Report thing was great. I worked on that with a guy named David Javerbaum, who I wrote a Broadway show called "Crybaby" with. He is the executive producer of The Daily Show. He called me up and asked if I wanted to work on the Christmas special. It was a lot of fun. A lot of different styles of music.

And Elvis Costello.

I actually got to see Elvis Costello singing something that I co-wrote. That was a big thrill. That was pretty big. Not to mention Willie Nelson. Rather intimidating.
