A nice but short night of Elvis tonight at the North Sea Jazz Fest in
Rotterdam. The show was only about 65 minutes. I didn't
keep a
setlist but nothing too unusual. It's a bit unfortunate that we just
recently (finally) watched the EC/AT DVD since this was so similar.
Elvis
was a bit heavier than I"ve seen him in awhile but looked good. Wore
all
black except for the shiny/sparkly grey shoes. Steve was there in all
white. Alan looked classy as always. There was sort of two sections to
the
show - the second half seemed better. Ended with the lovely Sharpest
Thorn.
I still get nicely giddly before an Elvis show and never leave
disappointed. The band is very good of course. Some especially tight
work
from the trombonist. The bass player slowly kept taking off clothes
until I
thought he'd be starkers by the end. It was a very balmy, humid day in
The
Netherlands and inside was quite warm. Songs I recall (in no particular

order): Watching The Detectives, Pump It Up, High Fidelity, Who's Gonna

Help Brother Get Further, River in Reverse (which still gives me
goosebumps
and seems to move Alan as well), Ascension Day, Tears, Tears And More
Tears.

Grant Walker wasn't terribly impressed with Elvis at the North Sea Jazz Festival -

At the Maas Stage, Elvis Costello played with Allen Toussaint and his band. For those who don't know Toussaint, he's one of the most influential figures in the New Orleans r&b scene, and in my opinion, stole the show. Costello stood like a confused middle-aged man, a broken down, sad sack version of Paul Simon, guitar in hand, losing himself between notes. He lacked the cutting edge that was ever-present in his early work with the Attractions like Armed Forces and Get Happy!! If it wasn't for the backing band and Toussaint, poor Costello - declining in spirit and increasing in age and belt notches - would have been left in the lurch. On stage, it's obvious that Touissant is still in his prime. Unfortunately for Costello he's far past his.

Perhaps Elvis ran over his dog, stole his girlfriend, raided his trust fund and framed him for kiddie porn.

Dutch TV will air the full 60 minutes of North Sea Jazz 2007 with EC & Toussaint.

That's today in about half an hour - sorry for the short notice.
