Another CD circle?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Hey! Don't get carried away on that front!

I was up late last night on Blue's stash. The question of a combined CD I raised with you got ditched - the one got split, and will be much the better for it. I'm almost jealous of you for the amount of brilliance you're going to be getting!

Okay, here is the track listing:

"Summer Days"

Medicine - Sons & Daughters

Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand - The Detroit Cobras
Same Place Holiday - Jim Noir
Smierc Ministra - L'Orchidée d'Hawaii
Fork and Knives (La Fête) - Beirut
Supertheory of Supereverything - Gogol Bordello
Bellingham - Jolie Holland
Saran Wrap - Dengue Fever
Cut Your Hair - Casey Dienel
Brooklyn's On Fire - Nicole Atkins
A Minha Menina - Os Mutantes
For Sale: The Preston School of Industry - Pavement
Wash in the Rain - The Bees
My Autobiography - Paul Baribeau
I Like It Like That - Brinsley Schwarz
This Is Where I Belong - Ron Sexsmith
How Am I To Be - The Watson Twins
Le Tourbillon - Jeanne Moreau
Reconnez Cherie - Wreckless Eric
Laisse tomber les filles - Fabienne Delsol
Lethal Lolita - Red Aunts
Yellow Taxi - Tralala
Glad All Over - The Rezillos
Stephen Stephen - Apples in Stereo
The Dandy Cowboys - Soko

I'm really digging it! An excellent mix of bands I am familiar with (Apples in Stereo, Pavement, Sons & Daughters, etc) and bands I'm not. All the songs are new to me, with a catchy, upbeat comon thread. It makes me bop to the beat as I walk down the street in the sticky summer heat... Thanks, stranger!

Have received this collection of 23 Down Under Grooves in electronic installments from bambooneedle (thank you).
Was familiar only with the 1st track, and with only a handful of these artists, but have enjoyed them all.

01 The Saints - This Perfect Day
- Glorious punk thrash

02 Jimmy Barnes - Driving Wheels
- remarkable larynx of as fine a rock singer you'll find anywhere

03 Spy Vs. Spy - Don't Tear It Down

04 Kate Ceberano - Pash
- poppy, sexy, sounds like a hit to me

05 Architecture In Helsinki - The Owls Go
- otherworldly, quirky, cute

06 Hoss - Simple Love
07 Spiderbait - Buy Me a Pony
- 2 x solid rockers

08 The Whitlams - Blow up the Pokies
- nice power ballad but what, pray, are 'the Pokies' ?

09 Paul Kelly - They Thought I Was Asleep

10 Doc Neeson - No Secrets

11 Deborah Conway - So Sweet
- sinister, claustrophobic, interesting

12 Nick Cave - Knoxville Girl
- typically intense reading of the folk standard (just knew he would have sung this)

13 The Fauves - Suitcase of Carter Browns
- presumably a reference to the pulp crime novelist?

14 Spy Vs. Spy - Sallie-Anne
- nice guitar sound

15 Slim Dusty - The Man From Snowy River
- so, he didn't just sing 'Pub With No Beer'?

16 The Triffids - Jerdacuttup Man
- a song about a bog body? wierd. nice bagpipes though.

17 Johnny Diesel & The Injectors - Get Ya Love

18 Johnny Diesel & The Injectors - Thang II
- nice slow blues-rock guitar

19 Janet Seidel - Black Coffee
- fine sultry reading of the American Songbook standard

20 Ben Lee - Close I've Come

21 The Fauves - He Needs His Own Tonight Show

It seems that the Australian music scene is alive and well. Why more of this doesn't travel is beyond me.

Glad you're enjoying it, rthtw.

Suitcase Of Carter Browns is indeed about the pulp fiction novelist. Apparently they were pretty racy and the song was inspired by the singer discovering a stash of them his dad had kept hidden in a suitcase. Anyway, that's typical of the band's grooviness which is in evidence on their hit Surf City Limits - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQASn7ijbZc . Pokies are poker machines.

My musical education continues with three stunning compilations from the great Otis Westinghouse.

We begin with a disc of African classics... this is the disc that struck me the most because of my lack of familiarity with the region's music. The only song Otis included that I heard before was "Yekermo Sew," which was featured in Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers. Some of the music on here almost had Indian or Arabic qualities to them, which goes to show you how diverse African music can be.

1. "Rock el Casbah Rachid Taha" from Tekitoi
2. "Winta Rachid Taha" from Tekitoi
3. "Yèkèrmo Sèw," Mulatu Astatqé from The Very Best Of Ethiopiques (Disc 1)
4. "Yekatit Mulatu Astatqé from The Very Best Of Ethiopiques (Disc 1)
5. "Erè Mèla Mèla Mahmoud Ahmed from The Very Best Of Ethiopiques (Disc 1)
6. "Papa Ndiaye" Orchestra Baobab from Made In Dakar
7. "Cler Achel Tinariwen" from Aman Iman: Water Is Life
8. "Imidiwan Winakalin Tinariwen" from Aman Iman: Water Is Life
9. "Djanfa (La Trahison) Amadou & Mariam from Dimanche À Bamako
10. "Erdi Ali Farka Touré Savane
11. "Kulanjan Taj Mahal & Toumani Diabaté BBC Radio 1 session 9/11/99
12. "Toumani Toumani Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra from Boulevard de l'Independance
13. "Single Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra Boulevard de l'Independance
14. "Elyne Road" Toumani Diabaté, The Mandé Variations

Next up, British classics - with a focus on Manchester! I had mentioned to Otis that I wasn't entirely familiar with the likes of Joy Division, Lloyd Cole or Scritti Politti, so it's nice to finally put music to the name. I obviously knew the Smiths tune and a few others sounded familiar. Overall I'm sill working on absorbing this one, but am enjoying it so far!

1. "Disorder" - Joy Division from Unknown Pleasures
2. "Twenty Four Hours" - Joy Division from Closer
3. "Old Enough To Know Better" - Lloyd Cole from Etc
4. "Vin Ordinaire" - Lloyd Cole from The Negatives
5. "Gettin, Havin' & Holdin'" - Scritti Politti from Songs To Remember
6. "Umm" - Scritti Politti from Anomie & Bonhomie
7. "Chance Meeting" - Josef K from Entomology
8. "The Missionary" - Josef K from Entomology
9. "Blue Boy" - Orange Juice from The Glasgow School
10. "Louise Louise" - Orange Juice from The Glasgow School
11. "Home Again" - Edwyn Collins from Home Again
12. "Totally Wired" - The Fall (a single)
13. "Sketch For Summer" - The Durutti Column from The Return of…
14. "Otis" - The Durutti Column from The Best Of
15. "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" - The Smiths from Hatful Of Hollow
16. "Switching Off" - Elbow from Cast Of Thousands
16. "Leaders Of The Free World" - Elbow from Leaders Of The Free World
17. "Pounding Doves," Elbow, from The Last Broadcast

Finally, a disc of classical. Obviously I was familiar with a lot of this stuff, but as my classical collection is lacking it was nice to have some fabulously recorded versions. I had never heard a cello suite arranged for the guitar, and Adres Segovia did not disappoint!

1. Vivaldi: Four Seasons "Spring – Neville Marriner: Academy Of St. Martin In The Fields
2. JS Bach: Goldberg Variations, Variation 1 – Murray Perahia
3. JS Bach Cello Suite No.1 part 1 arranged for guitar – Andrés Segovia
4. JS Bach Cello Suite No.1 part 1 on cello – Pierre Fournier
5. JS Bach Cello Suite No. 5 part 4. Sarabande – Pierre Fournier
6. JS Bach Cello Suite No. 6 part 1 – Pierre Fournier
7. JS Bach Cello Suite No. 6 part 5 – Pierre Fournier
8. JS Bach Cello Suite No. 6 part 5 arranged for guitar – Andrés Segovia
9. Schubert: Winterreise, opening song – Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
10. Schubert Impromptu in G flat major op.90 – Jenö Jandó
11. Schumann: Kinderszenen: Von Fremden Ländern und Menschen – Vladimir Horowitz
12. Schumann: Kinderszenen: Traumerei – Vladimir Horowitz
13. Mahler: Symphony 5, movement 4. Adiagietto – Simon Rattle: Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
14. Debussy: Children's Corner - 6. Golliwogg's Cake-walk – Alexis Weissenberg
15. Debussy: La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin – Alexis Weissenberg
16. Granados: Andaluza - Danza Española, Granada – Andrés Segovia
17. Prokofiev: From Romeo & Juliet - Montagues and Capulets – Lise De La Salle
18. Satie: Gnossiennes - 1. Lent – Philippe Entremont
19. Satie: Gnossiennes - 2. Avec Étonnement – Philippe Entremont
20. Satie: Descriptions Automatiques - 1. Sur Un Vaisseau – Philippe Entremont
21. Satie: Gymnopédies - 1. Lent Et Douloureux – Philippe Entremont

THANKS OTIS!!! :D
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Here is what Ready THTW sent me [with his comments in brackets] and mine coloured. In general lots of Americana and twang from the laddie from the north east of England. Plenty that is new to me and a couple of gems.

A Kinks track ****

Standard C&W fare. Not for me. **
10 The Rainmakers - let my people go-go
Also not for me, don't like the eightiesish production. **
11 Jack Nitzsche - The Lonely Surfer [more twangin']

12 Lucinda Williams - Which Will [nick drake cover]

Another instrumental. Nice if you like line dancing but I don't. **

70's soul by the sound of it. Nice enouigh. ***
17 Nick Lowe & the Impossible Birds- i'm coming home [twangin', again]
Like Nick but not so keen on this track ***
18 Ry Cooder - Secret Love
Another fucking instrumental **

A good start would be either the best of (to 1987) Lonely at the Top or the retrospective (to 2003, including some soundtrack tunes) Songbook Vol 1
23 David Baird - Friday Neet [may have limited appeal]
Just in case any 3rd party appetites have been whetted, here's what may be the 1st white man rap, from 1978 :

My stash from Moodster of Tennesse finally rolled in today. The lady doesn't disappoint. Ta, Moody! Two CDs, bearing out the Blues Brothers moment in Bob's Country Bunker when Jake asks the bartendress what kind of music they have usually, she says 'both kinds' - country AND western'. One CD is country, and the other is, like, western. My request for some Rancid has come true, replete with instructions: 'Turn it up FUCKING LOUD'! And a James McMurtry song comes with the note 'the Ulysses of Americana, if you will'! I love it.

the other thing to admire is the handrwriting in concentric circles listing the tracks on the body of both CDs. Very neat and evenly spaced. Colour me impressed.

Been out so ain't played a note, but look forward to imbibing long and slow.

Would agree. Thought the combo of her voice and this great, great song would win me over. Fair enough to come up with a very different version, but it loses the poetry and magic of the original. I was listening to the LP in-flight recently, and most of it is good, but this song is outstanding. Compare:

12 Lou Rawls - Love Is A Hurtin' Thing
More good soul ****
13 Lovin' Spoonful - Never Goin' Back
Not that keen on this ***
14 Sheila & B Devotion - Spacer [chic!]

18 Massive Attack - Teardrop
I have never liked Massive Attck much but this track is growing on me ****
19 Ron Sexsmith - This Song [rare uptempo from Otis's fave balladeer]
Nice enough Ron Sexsmith song. I generally like his songs in isolation, but get bored with too many together. This is on Otis' Tower, which he kindly sent me a few years ago and one of the better songs imo. ****
20 The La's - Doledrum
Already fam with this excellent track *****
21 Pink Floyd - The Scarecrow [aah, Syd]
Yeah, Syd is good ****
22 Buddy Holly - Midnite Shift
I am very familiar with this BH track, but always good to hear it *****

See The Gizmo
I was a big 10cc fan back in the day, esp. the 1st 2 albums. The range of styles & voices was remarkable. This one is Kevin Godley, sounding like a choir boy/Art Garfunkel.
However, thank you for your honest comments on both discs. I'm pleased that at least some of it met with approval.

Featured too on 'Into The Light', an excellent Siouxsie and the Banshees track. I remember John McGeoch's fantastic guitar sound and playing on that. was the gizmo involved? Great drumming on it from Budgie, too.

The bombdiggities from Cosmos have arrived! 8, yes 8!! cds in all Intriguing titles like: Frankly Speaking (Frank Zappa - isn't a rope leash the Designated Zappa fan?),Heart Full of Soul, Moody Mix #1, 2 & 3 (!!!), the "El Vez" Mix, the Last Mix, and best of all, well at this point, is a copy of the Nick Lowe show we saw together way back when in Nashville.

I have been listening to MM#1 - damn, that's taking me back to my transistor radio days. I'll post more as I get to hear them. I just wanted to say a big thanks to Cosmos for sending all this wonderful stuff. You are an absolute sweetheart.

There's a lot that I like on here but I don't want to do a half-assed overview. Earlier I'd intended to go all out and post links to hypemachine and stuff, I'd been enjoying reading up on background stories, like, in Bon Iver's case how the guy (Justin Vernon) spent 3 months secluded in a log cabin where he wrote the songs, that was a very enjoyable part of the mix cds, but then I kind of got sidetracked and I'd have to get as properly reacquainted again... I was thoroughly enjoying most of it, though. Look 'em up yerselves. Bon Iver's was one of the stand out tracks. Thank you Sam!
