Now this is very interesting. Somewhat reminiscent of Portishead, with a jazzy, noirish sort of feel, but less gauzy and trippy. In any case, this has it in spades over what I've heard from mega-hyped English singers like Adele and Duffy, who seem very flat and one-dimensional in comparison.

Great record, WSS. Oddly overlooked as it came out a little bit before the British retro boom sparked by Winehouse. Some fantastic tunes on it.

I like the very unforced style of singing. Getting a bit tired of all the emoting.Bad Ambassador wrote:Great record, WSS. Oddly overlooked as it came out a little bit before the British retro boom sparked by Winehouse. Some fantastic tunes on it.

This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Checked out 'One More Chance' - sounds great. Very Dusty. This is what Duffy should sound like.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Wife is working from home with me today and she threw this on the CD player...
Gearing up for the long weekend. The grill has been bought and assembled and now I just need to figure out what I'm going to make. Steaks? Chicken? Maybe some shrimp skewers?
Going to see the new Indiana Jones pic with the boy tomorrow, then the Red Bulls game on Sunday. Weather finally warming up.
Now my turn...

Ribs are a bit too much of a mess - maybe later in the summer. I do have a killer BBQ sauce recipe.

Give us your sauce recipe, go on! Sun shining here, and we too have a long weekend, and I have the week off - half-term, at home doing family stuff. Lovely. Sadly though, and with family visitng from Ireland tomorrrow, the forecast is for heavy rain, so the punting + picnic and barbecue we'd planned will be fucked. Too bad. We can still eat the nosh. My beloved local butcher's special this week was pork/apple/cider. Yum, tyum. And I do a killer Lebanese chicken wing recipe for the BBQ involving a tahini marinade and then a tahini dipping sauce. God food tastes so much better off a charcoal barbecue.

That baseball album I posted about in the baseball thread? Kind of awesome. I've been enjoying the free stream on Yep Roc's website. I particularly like the song about Harvey Haddix, who retired 36 consecutive batters in 12 innings but didn't get credited with a perfect game because someone on the other team got a hit in the 13th inning.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Portishead - seems to have had good reviews, but then they were always critics' darlings. Isn't it just more of the same? They've never done it for me, way less interesting than fellow Bristolians Massive Attack. I think it's her I find particularly annoying, all fake expressions and vocal mannerisms. I'm sending like BBN on Bragg! I had to turn over when they were on Later recently, just couldn't stomach it. Do you rate 3?
DeVotchKa - another band with a Clockwork Orange derived name (meaning 'young girl' and close to the Russian), now when they were on Later I thought 'interesting'. Good voice, interesting sounds. They played 'CLockwise Witness' which was also on a Word sampler and I like it a lot. Playing a sousaphone when a bass would have done was a bit affected, but hey, they clearly like their instruments. Do you rate this?

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I like 3 a lot. Quite different from their earlier stuff IMO - sparer, more desolate, less groove-oriented. Yeah it's not exactly sunny summer music but I love their stuff. I don't find it affected, but I can see how it might not appeal to some. Gibbons' voice may be a bit of an acquired taste but I really like it - always just on the edge of cracking. "Hunter" is my favorite tune so far.
I saw Devotchka open for M. Ward a few years ago and was really taken with them. The instrumentation is a little unusual, but it all works. I dunno if you saw Little Miss Sunshine, but their music was featured in that as well. Haven't had the chance to give this new one more than one listen so far, but will let you know what I think once I do. Didn't know that about the Clockwork Orange reference.

Haven't seen LMS yet but was aware of their involvement. been playing Clockwise Witness a few times today, what a great song. Really soaring melodies, and the singer rather marvelous delivering it. Do report back as I'd be interested to know how it compares to the rest.

The first two disks really capture the essence of the band, one of the most misunderstood bands in history.

Most in the states think Little Feat is a southern country rock band in the spirit of the Charlie Daniels Band. Not even close, but thier most memorable 'hit' was "Oh! Atlanta", a song that sounded like a southern anthem. This was an extraordinary band with jazz, rock, country, R and B, and even classical influences.
Listen to "The Last Record Album" from beginning to end to get a great appreciation for the Feats. If you listen to a song from Time Loves A Hero, called "Day at the Dog Races", you'll see what they were capable of. Thrilling live, transcending any studio effort.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Little Feat was SO cool with Lowell George. I haven't heard much of their stuff since his death. They were such a loose, yet rhythmically complex band.
I'd have to disagree and say that "Dixie Chicken" is their most memorable song.
