Tower of Song

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Tower of Song

Post by BlueChair »

We haven't done one of these in ages. I'm including nine random songs here from across the board. For those who haven't played before, everyone is entitled to drop one song from the list in exchange for a new song. Anything by Elvis is automatically disqualified because our entire list would end up being Elvis. Actually, let's limit the list to one song per artist, and once you try to put in an artist you can't put them in again if they get removed (though someone else can). Make sense? Let's go! Whatever's standing at midnight Eastern Time on March 31 is our Tower. Make sure you paste the full new list when you replace a song so that it always appears. And don't be a Tower hog - one swap per day!

"Paint It, Black" - The Rolling Stones

"Just A Little Lovin'" - Dusty Springfield

"Sweet Gene Vincent" - Ian Dury

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana

"Crazy" - Gnarls Barkley

"Orange Crush" - R.E.M.

"Night Life" - Willie Nelson

"Maybelline" - Chuck Berry

"Going To A Go-Go" - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

And it had that erroneous comma in it, as if Blue was overly influenced by being referred to as a colour, and he thought this song was an imperative to a timid person with a paintbrush before a blank canvas.

Well I'm the first person to go twice, but can't be labelled a hog as I managed to keep away all day on Saturday! Why are there only 9 this time? Surely all towers have 10 by definition?

Sorry, Willie Nelson, you're a fine man, but I don't know your song. Saw kd live at the Union Chapel on telly the other day and she did a spectacular version of her own classic, boy what a voice. So one third of the tower is made up of superb female vocalists.

"Slit Skirts" - Pete Townshend
"Just A Little Lovin'" - Dusty Springfield
"Tower of Song" - Leonard Cohen
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana
"Greetings To The New Brunette" - Billy Bragg

Yeah - I think a lot of the people who used to be really into this game are long gone... El Vez, noiseradio, etc.

Not very humerus. That's just low, ousting a song that's just gone i. You probably haven't even heard, and in any case, who the fuck are Pete and the Pirates? Elbow seem to have had a lot of negative comments on their name recently ('they'd be much bigger if they had a better name' etc., which is silly), but Pete and the Pirates sounds like a band who entertain at parties for 7 year olds, several notches down the bad band names list from the actually rather hilariously named 'Does It Offend You, Yeah?'

I think this Tower ended at midnight. That's why I started a newer and more limited Tower.

I'd heard that if two Towers run concurrently, this board would explode!

Indeed. And so our Tower is:

"Just A Little Lovin'" - Dusty Springfield
"Dirty Girl" - Eels
"Kid" - Pretenders
"Life Gets Better" - Graham Parker
"Vicky Verky" - Squeeze
"Valerie" - The Zutons
"In The Neighbourhood" - Tom Waits
"Tears of a Clown" - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
"Come On Feet" - Pete & the Pirates

Not a great Tower, but pretty good - and certainly reflective of what people on this board are into. Hopefully cosmos' Tower gets a little more love.

You're right I am not familiar with the song, I may well of heard it but can't recall it. I do have Cast of Thousands which I like, but obviously do not like enough to inspire me to get any more Elbow. The main reason for the ousting was your arrogant proclamation that it was the best song in the last three decades. I also knew it would wind you up and true to form you took the bait.

Pete & the Pirates is a fantastic name with a hint of humour and a nod to bygone days of Bill Haley etc. Their debut album is very good you should give it a try.
