Thought this article was interesting. It's about critics of jazz musicians.

Why do so few musicians understand the power and creativity of the sound between the notes...analogous to 'white space' in print advertising. Miles mastered it on so many recordings, to the degree that some think him lazy, or bored, or uncreative. WSS got me thinking about Miles "Pangea" the other day, and as I listen to the two forty minutes each songs that make up this two CD live Japanese recording, he pushes the white space to the max. Result? For some, Pangea is brilliance beyond comparison, while to others, it is a waste of time.

But I digress. I wish more musicians would take as much time NOT to fill the space as they do to try to fill the void with something. Strategic bursts of silence imbue a recording with such powerful, rich contrasts...

I've been thinking about this issue in relation to John Martyn. Some of his finest moments (Solid Air, Sweet Little Mystery) have very spare instrumentation and exploit the space in between very effectively. Grace and danger as a whole does this, really.

My 25 year old son landed in Orange Cnty yesterday...haven't seen him in about 6 months. Final year of PHd at University (Ohio State). As he walked through security, looking very much his age, I went through a sequence much like that captured in the fluff film called Father of the Bride featuring Steve Martin as Dad ("Don't forget to fasten your Condoms!"). It was a few days before the weeding or so, and Steve was having a final meal with his soon-to-be-married daughter. As he was sitting at the table he would look at her and see her in alternate stages of development...a cute 2 year old, and inquisitive four year old, etc. At the time I saw the movie, my kid was a child, and I thought it to be an interesting film device. But now, as my son approached me and my family, I saw him in various stages of his growth and development..my little boy. He will always be my little boy, this fine young man who approaches.
Interesting feeling.

Just back from a wonderful week of cruising the Western Caribbean with the family. Gorgeous weather the whole week. Some great time at the beach, climbing up Dunn's River Falls in Jamaica with my daughter and getting absolutely soaked, visiting the incredible Tulum Mayan ruins near Cozumel in Mexico (blazing hot), learning how to play the steel drums (sort of). I wasn't sure how I would feel about doing a cruise since we had never been before, but it was a great experience and a rare opportunity to be with family.

I already have my eye on Scandinavia, Finland, St. Petersburg in a few years time, when the kids can appreciate it a bit more.

It's great meeting new EC fans.

There was a girl dancing next to me at the Tower of London show. I apologised for my dancing (naturally) and hoped it hadn't ruined her evening  After the show we got chatting and she came for a drink with me, Neil., Sulky Lad and John Foyle. I gave her the name of this site so I hope we see her here soon.

Would any of our non-New Yorkers believe how hard it is to find a decent two-bedroom for $1800? In case you're interested, it is very very hard.

I would. I sympathise. Apparently Alex James creates an aphorism in his highly-praised Bit of a Blur book along the lines of 'All good things end up in New York', so it's worth paying for.
