Song Titles Game - Part II

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen

A good Bruce song or a not so good one. Discuss.

Not one of his better ones in my view but certainly the one that brought him into the UK mainstream.

"R.O.C.K. in the USA"- John Mellancamp VG, I would not be able to use this one if you had not chosen yours. I dislike both songs-their anthemic thudding just jars my ears. Lisa and I have increasingly been turned off by that early Bruce. It is just noise. There is a local radio station that likes to play that period stuff at 7am. I do not want to hear it. That particular song is jingoistic, too. Both of these songs are cloying in a simplistic way. Bruce has an impact for me when he is honestly introspective or he explores the darker side of America- The Ghost of Tom Joad or Devils and Dust or Tunnel of Love artist. His stadium stuff turns me off. I stopped going to his shows back in 1977.

We didn't have the luxury of picking and choosing when to see Bruce but I've loved the 3 shows I've seen, particularly Wembley Stadium on Independence Day in 1985.

Nowadays I need to go whenever he plays over here. I missed out on the last round of shows.

Rock the Casbah - The Clash

Again not a favourite song from one of my favourite bands (up to 1980 anyway).

Personally I think Born In The USA is Bruce's worst song ever. Far too clichéd, too commercial and too much "for the masses". Almost seemed like a "contractual obligation" type song ! For me, The River was a great album with some fantastic songs, and I obviously like a lot of his earlier stuff aswell. Funnily enough I also saw him at Wembley in 85 and he was amazing. Full of energy, a really long time on stage and a brilliant performer. To this day that is till one of my all time best gigs.
