Valentine's Day, Good Thing Or Most Crap Holiday Ever?

Valentine's Day, Good Thing Or Most Crap Holiday Ever?

Post by Marxbro »

Well it's tomorrow and some people are dreading its arrival while others are waiting anxiously for it to begin. Which are you?

I think Valentine's day stinks because it is such a scam. Only women benefit from it (if you don't count the sex that a guy hopefully gets after shelling out for flowers, candy, dinner, and a gift) and that ain't fair.

Where is the guy's holiday? Well? Right, there isn't one. Valentine's Day, you stink like yesterday's diapers.

My theory is that people hate valentines day when they don't have someone to share it with and kind of enjoy it (on varying degrees) when they do.

I'm by no means enthusiastic about valentines day, but I like being romantic, and I disagree that it is a women's holiday as opposed to a guy's one. I think couples where the guy is expected to pay for everything is problematic to begin with. Valentines Day, like most holidays, is (to me) about sharing. I like chocolate, candies, wine, dinner, and lovemaking. So I don't feel like I'm benefiting any less from the holiday than my girlfriend is.
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

This is my first V-Day ever as an adult single woman, and I look forward to it. Love isn't limited to sweethearts, and the celebration isn't limited to candy hearts and flowers and all that crap. I'm going out to dinner with a bunch of friends for a "We're Single and It's Totally a Good Thing" celebration--good times.

Of course, if some hot, smart guy came along, I'd drop out on dinner with my buddies in a second.

I have a date to see Masculin/Féminin...with my dad. I feel like I'm in a sitcom.

I hate to say this but, like many others, it is a crash commercial holiday pushed on the masses to move product. I give Mrs S roses year round and am frustrated that they are VERY expensive around VD. Most of the chocolate is mediocre and some of it is double-wrapped so if it doesn't sell for one holiday, it can have an outer wrap removed and sold on the next holiday. Resturant service stinks because everyone feels pressure to eat out on that one day (similarly prom and homecoming season is bad also).

I also don't like being pushed big screen TVs around the SuperBowl, etc, etc. Marketing is seasonal and I hate being pushed/tricked into doing something.

On top of that, MrsS and I have a long history of a "Valentine's Day Curse." We have had lots of bad things happen on VD. Back in college, she broke up with me on VD.

With all of that said, MrsS and I had a lovely night last night. We caught the touring company for Stomp. VD's highlight will likely be the Pepe Le Pew marathon on Boomerang. :-) Plus next weekend we are going to Chattanooga on a dual purpose trip and will be staying at a lovely bed and breakfast inn http://www.mayorsmansion.com/.

I love her and try to be romantic year round. I hate to feel pressured to do something specific because it helps the chocolate, floral, greeting card, and food service industries.

sigh. dr. spooky, can you be cloned? you and the mrs. are so CUTE!!! i love you guys.

valentine's day is just another day for me. when i was married, i tried to come up w/ gifts the guy would like. he didn't appreciate many of them. one of many signs that we were doomed.

these days i try to treat myself well, and tell my friends i love them, and show them i love them. if i had a sweetie i'd likely suggest we not do anything special on a *freakin monday!* and go out the following weekend, when the insanity of the day has worn off.

and yeah, i too broke up w/a guy on valentine's day. i'm not proud of it, but i was just a kid (jr. high). god, those were hard years to live thru.

everybody take care, okay? hugs from poppet. :)

it's not just the guys who feel pressured! I say we all head down to our local Hallmark and fling some chocolates.

I think this is a fantastic attitude, SLC. I am fortunate enough to have had a wonderful, beautiful, romantic valentine for the past couple of years, but if I didn't, I certainly wouldn't begrudge those who did. And you are so correct- love is a good thing to be celebrated in all its manifestations.

'If music be the food of love, play on, give me excess of it.'

'There is no love in this world anymore.'

'It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gentle and kind.'

In this country, every single event is plugged to death (the Cadbury's creme eggs appear on Jan 2nd, etc.). I resent it massively, but I love to indulge in it. And I love to be celebrating love.

After that rant, I am still an old softy at heart and treated MrsS to a nice bouquet of a dozen yellow roses. I just compromised and got them at Costco.

I like Valentines Day...It gives me the chance to express my feelings and express my love...not that I don't do it on a daily basis. Valentine's Day should be a two way street, but most women don't even think about what they should do for their men. Just what they get!

I have to say that most women just sit around and bitch and think, "what's in it for me?". The man should just do his duty and then be happy with a little poon tang once in a blue moon.

Then they wonder...."why isn't he affectionate any more?"..Why is he more interested in John Madden football than talking?"

No respect for The Cock...no real interest for you and your projects, thoughts, problems or need for attention. It's a rather simple equation....but many women misinterpret a man's primitive nature and assume he's just in for the ride, cuz she's beautiful and all that junk. Women are quite lazy with regards to a relationship. Then they wake up one day and ask "what happened?" and cry.

I never ever equated that the Valentine's Day initials were VD until I read DrS post.

Valentine's Day, like VD, is a load of clap trap.

I like to do romantic things for Mrs VG (like going to 3 EC concerts in 5 days without her  ) often. I don't need the commercial rubbish.

I wholeheartedly agree with the commercial aspect of Valentine's - and think that everyone should try to be romantic year round, and that you shouldn't need an artificial holiday to do so.

That said - Blue gave me roses and chocolate today, and I'm thrilled. He's a wonderfully romantic guy all the time, and this being our first Valentine's Day to actually spend together, it was nice to be treated to a few romantic sweets.

Now the question is - how early in the day can you start with the chocolate?

Red, as a woman you should know that chocolate can be consumed at any hour of the day. Go for it!

Verbal, you've apparently made your wife so happy by being gone so much lately. She told me she had really enjoyed you going to all those Elvis shows so she could finally have some time away from you.

As you know I can lighten up a room just by leaving it!

LC, don't be unhappy!

i am envious of you. you get to spend lotsa time in glasgow (okay, you live there, but still).

compare yourself to me, you'll feel MUCH better.

this morning i went to see a specialist dentist to make sure i need a root canal. i got on the bus. i got off at the subway. got to the platform, there are HOARDS of people waiting for a train. i have never seen this many people at a T stop before. it actually looks dangerous to wait, there are SO many people.

back outta the station. grab the next of the bus i got off of. get off at end, switch to another bus. get off and switch to another branch of the subway (green line). ride that to end (north station) and walk to appt. one hour late.

ok fine, dr is quite nice for a dentist. very gentle. but still, makes the tooth hurt.

getting back to my office was a piece of cake compared to the earlier commute.

and now my whole head hurts from the tooth poking this morning. and the root canal is scheduled for a week from tomorrow.

sigh.

schadenfreude - your bestest friend. it's good stuff. use it.

Bummer on the morning poppet. Dental woes can be bad enough without having a scary experience at the train stop. I don't like crowds either.

I'm so excited! Mrs S and the kids stopped off at my office and brought me a Snoopy and a balloon bouquet. :-)
