Who floats your boat?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

And a solid sense of self. And yes of course true love is the biggest boat floater, as your avatar has told us many times...

Miss Landers from "Leave It To Beaver"

Young love, teacher's pet
Cheeks flushed apple red
Ringing you every day
Begging for a word of praise
I've put aside my foolish games
I run and hide and call names
School's out, the bells'll ring
Now's the time to teach me everything

Teacher, teacher, teach me love
I can't learn fast enough
Teacher, teacher, teach me more
I've got to learn to love for sure

Lesson one just begun
Growing up, English fun
Grown up, out of school
Out of luck and out of rules
No one there to tell me how
A different world - teacher, teacher, teach me now

Teacher, teacher, teach me love
I can't learn fast enough
Teacher, teacher, teach me more
I've got to learn to love for sure

Lesson two nothing new
I can't love, just passing through

The books I read don't understand
What it means to be a man
I need a woman just like you
Teacher, teacher, teach me what to do

Teacher, teacher, teach me love
I can't learn fast enough
Teacher, teacher, teach me more
I've got to learn to love for sure

Mr. Misery-Forgive me but I must comment. "What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! how infinite in faculties! in form and moving, how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension, how like a god!"

There is always a method to your madness. You are wise as you are beautiful. Who was it who said: "When the sea was calm all boats alike showed mastership in floating." Love is the tidal wave I suppose. .

Mug-Thank you for reminding the board we should always take the instruction of an avatar such as his.

Boat-floating is also considered on a case-by-case basis.[/quote]

Yes, admirably open-minded. In any case, glad to see you're not one of those "lips-that-beef-shall-never-touch-mine" types! (This is California.... )

And to Lapinsjolie -- Alec Guiness was way, way cool, wasn't he?

-Christopher Walken. The most "otherwordly" of actors.
-John Barrymore. Forever the coolest and the most tragic.
-James Thurber. Genius.
-Virginia Woolf. The modern woman.
-Charles Bukowski. The modern man.
-Various people on this board who keep me addicted with their posts.
-Dylan's Time Out of Mind on vinyl.

Bobster-Alec Guinness was heavenly, to me anyway. Brilliant, what clinched my undying ardor was reading his books. I wish he started writing sooner. His talent and devotion as a husband and father make him such a wonderful and complete person. Brilliant yet humble and always uncompromising in matters of character. I have a litany of men but needed to narrow it down---drat!

El Vez-I love James Thurber! He is the namesake of my adored rabbit. Apropos he has eye trouble but only blind in one eye. Very witty, deep sort of genius (the man and the rabbit) he should have made the top ten American list. Along with Dorothy Day, Flannery O'Conner, Rose Hawthorne. . .

We all have our message board crushes.

El Vez, about Virginia Woolf and Charles Bukowski being the modern woman and man, I'm afraid you're right.

Blue Chair, it has gone off topic, but we should not allow ourselves to be imprisoned by etiquette.

Lapinsjolis, a beautiful woman once quoted these lines to me: "My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep. The more I give to thee the more I have, for both are infinite." If love is a tidal wave, my true love keeps me afloat!

To return to the topic:

Love, exciting and new
Come Aboard. We're expecting you.
Love, life's sweetest reward.
Let it flow, it floats back to you.
The Love Boat soon will be making another run
The Love Boat promises something for everyone
Set a course for adventure,
Your mind on a new romance.
Love won't hurt anymore
It's an open smile on a friendly shore.
Yes LOVE! It's LOVE!
The Love Boat soon will be making another run
The Love Boat promises something for everyone
Set a course for adventure,
Your mind on a new romance.
Love won't hurt anymore
It's an open smile on a friendly shore.
It's LOVE! It's LOVE! It's LOVE!
It's the Love Boat-ah!

Bluechair-I'd have welcome James Thurber aboard! I'm attracted to all the men I've mentioned.

Mr. Misery-What a memory! "O, flatter me, for love delights in praises" X! for that: Sin from thy lips? O trespass sweetly urged! Give me my sin again.

Lapinsjolis, the poignant song you quote reminds me of a love that used to be. But I forgot about Julie when I found my Juliet. X! "Eternity is in our lips and eyes"--Antony and Cleopatra.

Do you mean lips that touch beef? Because if lips that beef shall never touch mine, I'd be staring down a lifetime of celibacy. All lips beef now and again. I beefed about a stupid, bratty American girl in the post office just yesterday.

The antithesis of boat-floating: Americans who get mad when Europeans in Europe don't know English.

Miss BA --

More proof that what I need on this site is not a moderator, but an astute editor! Yup, I don't think ANYONE's that picky!

And, also yup, that second thing is icky. Do you actually see that over there? No wonder people think we're stupid. (Well, they with the current administration they have plenty of other evidence <sigh>) Reminds me of an old Steve Martin routine about French ("It's like those people have a different word for EVERYTHING!")

Do you also see people talking more loudly as if that will somehow render their American more understandable?

The other day there was a girl in the post office who was trying to buy a postcard stamp, and I stepped in to translate for her, because the guy just shrugged whenever she said, "POSTCARD STAMP." So I tell the guy what she wants, and he says, "quel pays?" so I say, "what country?" and she rolls her eyes and says, "the STATES," and the guy looks at me and says, "quel pays?" and I tell him. Then she turns to me and says, "I'm an AMERICAN, I'm speaking ENGLISH, obviously I'm sending mail to AMERICA." So I remind her that she's in FRANCE, and that people speak FRENCH here, and her language deficiencies are not their problem. Then she said something snotty about the French "attitude" towards speaking English and flounced out with her postcard. To be fair, though, she's the ugliest American I've seen in probably ever.

Many moons ago I worked in a Post Office in central London and the dumbness of the average US tourist never failed to give us a laugh.
The standard request was "can I get about 20 stamps for postcards to the STATES". About? Just tell me how many fucking stamps you want.

US Tourist "Can you give me directions to Kings Cross Station"
me "Walk up the street here, go past Euston Station.........."
UST "We have a Houston in the STATES...."

The worst Australians any of you may have encountered weren't that bad, were they? Some of the English, Irish, and particularly Scottish people I've worked with have sometimes been told to "speak Australian!". That was on a building site, mind you. One Australian would keep saying "wee", as in small to a Scot, "You're just a wee little pier-son, hand me ma tuuuls. Good lud."

dateline: Gatlinburg, Tennessee, tourist mega-trap a/k/a the Gateway to the Smoky Mountains

Well, I don't think I bought about 20 stamps from So L, but I am guilty of say 'about' a lot. I don't think I can communicate without it. That and 'fixin' to'--as in I'm fixin to go home in about 30 minutes. Just doesn't sound right as I will go home in 34 minutes, 20 seconds. We don't get many non-Americans touristing here, but being within a day's drive of 50% of the US population, we get just about too many neighboring village idiots. I used to wait tables and I would try to walk home from work, but I couldn't go three feet without some idiot stopping me to ask where the Space Needle is (it's like 500 feet tall--look the fuck up!), or what's a good place to eat, or where do all the locals live? My face was already in a painful grimace from smiling all thru my shift. Those were the days. Idiots are wandering the world in huge numbers. My favorite stupid question is: where did Lincoln give his Gatlinburg address? About 125 years ago some place north of here. About all I know is that it's about time.
Like me, the "g" is silent.

(am I the only one still getting this 'invalid_session' bit? it's making it impossible for me to post.)

They had a bit in some paper recently that had some guy walking around famous monuments, asking stupid questions and rating each city for their rudeness.

I think the best one was when he stood directly under the Eiffel Tower and asked where it was. Heh.

(my boat is currently being floated by Brian Molko, the guy with the spiked afro who always shows up at R5 shows, and femslash.)
if we can rock together, why can't we walk together?

Lapinsjolis

Since I read your last post on this thread, I keep hearing 'Young Americans' but withy the words 'Dumb Americans' in the title.

It's driving me nuts!

Ps. you come across as anything but 'dumb' - quite the opposite!

after being in Denmark for over 5 years, and just being on vacation in San Francisco for the last month, I must say that American women do NOT float my boat....not very cute at all. At least they're better than the girls from the UK...but that's not saying much...

maybe it's because I'm so in love?

greetings from Paradise....
