Bobster-Alec Guinness was heavenly, to me anyway. Brilliant, what clinched my undying ardor was reading his books. I wish he started writing sooner. His talent and devotion as a husband and father make him such a wonderful and complete person. Brilliant yet humble and always uncompromising in matters of character. I have a litany of men but needed to narrow it down---drat!

El Vez-I love James Thurber! He is the namesake of my adored rabbit. Apropos he has eye trouble but only blind in one eye. Very witty, deep sort of genius (the man and the rabbit) he should have made the top ten American list. Along with Dorothy Day, Flannery O'Conner, Rose Hawthorne. . .

And, also yup, that second thing is icky. Do you actually see that over there? No wonder people think we're stupid. (Well, they with the current administration they have plenty of other evidence <sigh>) Reminds me of an old Steve Martin routine about French ("It's like those people have a different word for EVERYTHING!")

Do you also see people talking more loudly as if that will somehow render their American more understandable?

The other day there was a girl in the post office who was trying to buy a postcard stamp, and I stepped in to translate for her, because the guy just shrugged whenever she said, "POSTCARD STAMP." So I tell the guy what she wants, and he says, "quel pays?" so I say, "what country?" and she rolls her eyes and says, "the STATES," and the guy looks at me and says, "quel pays?" and I tell him. Then she turns to me and says, "I'm an AMERICAN, I'm speaking ENGLISH, obviously I'm sending mail to AMERICA." So I remind her that she's in FRANCE, and that people speak FRENCH here, and her language deficiencies are not their problem. Then she said something snotty about the French "attitude" towards speaking English and flounced out with her postcard. To be fair, though, she's the ugliest American I've seen in probably ever.

Many moons ago I worked in a Post Office in central London and the dumbness of the average US tourist never failed to give us a laugh.
The standard request was "can I get about 20 stamps for postcards to the STATES". About? Just tell me how many fucking stamps you want.

US Tourist "Can you give me directions to Kings Cross Station"
me "Walk up the street here, go past Euston Station.........."
UST "We have a Houston in the STATES...."

The worst Australians any of you may have encountered weren't that bad, were they? Some of the English, Irish, and particularly Scottish people I've worked with have sometimes been told to "speak Australian!". That was on a building site, mind you. One Australian would keep saying "wee", as in small to a Scot, "You're just a wee little pier-son, hand me ma tuuuls. Good lud."

Well, I don't think I bought about 20 stamps from So L, but I am guilty of say 'about' a lot. I don't think I can communicate without it. That and 'fixin' to'--as in I'm fixin to go home in about 30 minutes. Just doesn't sound right as I will go home in 34 minutes, 20 seconds. We don't get many non-Americans touristing here, but being within a day's drive of 50% of the US population, we get just about too many neighboring village idiots. I used to wait tables and I would try to walk home from work, but I couldn't go three feet without some idiot stopping me to ask where the Space Needle is (it's like 500 feet tall--look the fuck up!), or what's a good place to eat, or where do all the locals live? My face was already in a painful grimace from smiling all thru my shift. Those were the days. Idiots are wandering the world in huge numbers. My favorite stupid question is: where did Lincoln give his Gatlinburg address? About 125 years ago some place north of here. About all I know is that it's about time.

They had a bit in some paper recently that had some guy walking around famous monuments, asking stupid questions and rating each city for their rudeness.

I think the best one was when he stood directly under the Eiffel Tower and asked where it was. Heh.

(my boat is currently being floated by Brian Molko, the guy with the spiked afro who always shows up at R5 shows, and femslash.)

after being in Denmark for over 5 years, and just being on vacation in San Francisco for the last month, I must say that American women do NOT float my boat....not very cute at all. At least they're better than the girls from the UK...but that's not saying much...
