Tower of Song

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

JM - I wasn't even entirely sure it was an attempted set up. Now know it wasn't but I'd still have been honoured.

It's all looking a bit old and male (though in one case old and female). So here's someone younger, who sings with a female, even though she ain't the name credit:

Otis - if your looking for some Small Faces- they were pretty much a singles band so a good compilation should do you right - there are quite a few double CD best of collections around. The Decca records stuff is mostly r&b and the Intermediate records stuff is more psychedelic.

Ogdens Nut Gone Flake would be the album to get though its second side is a concept peice complete with nonsensical narration between tracks by Prof Stanley Unwin - which may nor may not be your cup of meat.

Merci beaucoup. Will have to check a compilation out. Ogdens is one of those titles you hear and hear again over the years, Ill have to llisten to that too, though side 2 might be hard work!

BWAP - I don't have Iggy's New Values but it looks promising with 5 Foot 1 and I'm Bored (which I have, taped on video)... it must be when he started doing more new wave-y stuff which I think he adapts to well with his voice and phrasing -- Cry For Love is a good example, and I really should have put that in (from Blah Blah Blah, 1986 btw to correct myself), it's a great song (don't know what a "sammy morning" is though).

The only other Iggy record I have is 1999's Avenue B, which is a thoughtful stripped down affair, and I recommend it. The songs sound like good quality demos which could just as well have been the basis for a far more dressed up and ambitious album or built on a lot for live performance. Maybe didn't have the money or the inclination for that. One of those options could make for a great reissue bonus disc for it sometime; sort of a reverse concept: this is what it would become.

CRY FOR LOVE (I.Pop/Jones. Pretty sure Jones is Bowie, he helped out on BBB)

Status seekers -
I never cared
Once I found out
They never dared
To seize the world and
Shake it upside down
And every stinking bum
Should wear a crown

Sayin' I
Cry for love
Till all the plates are broken
Cry for love
Until my eyes are soakin'
Yeah I
Cry for love
Oh every sammy morning
Yeah I
Cry for love
'Cause imitation's boring
Cry for love

Bad TV that
Insults me freely
Still I know what
I'm dyin' to see
In searching for
A meaningful embrace
Sometimes my self-respect
Took second place

An' I
Cried for love
I did what my heart told me
Cried for love
Can't stand it
When they scold me
Yeah I
Cried for love
On every sammy morning
Yeah I
Cry for love
'Cause imitation's boring
Cry for love

Surfers ride for love
And wipe out when it hits 'em
Soldiers kill for love
And nobody admits it
If you're cryin' for love
Well, that's ok
Don't sweat it
If you're cryin' for love
Then there's still a chance
You'll get it
Cry for love

Out - Siouxsie
In - Scritti Politti, one of the best things on their first LP, Songs To Remember. This certainly lives up to the name. To quote a fan's site: "A charmingly manic-depressive contemplation on love; it alludes lyrically to both Percy Sledge and Ludwig Wittgenstein, and sounds like a 2-tone ska band on quaaludes. Weird enough for you?" To wit:

"When a man loves a woman
It's the language of gettin', havin' and holdin'
And it's true like the Tractatus..."

1952 VINCENT BLACK LIGHTNING

Oh says Red Molly to James "That's a fine motorbike.
A girl could feel special on any such like"
Says James to Red Molly "My hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952.
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme"
And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride

Oh says James to Red Molly "Here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man.
For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen,
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine.
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you.
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

"Come down, come down, Red Molly" called Sergeant McRae
"For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery.
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside.
Oh come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside"
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
He said "I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

Says James "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl.
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do,
Ah, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52"
Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
Said "I've got no further use for these.
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome,
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home"
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride.
