Top 5 Guitarists

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Top 5 Guitarists

Post by taz »

I know you all are gonna have plenty of different viewpoints and might even flame my list, but thought I'd throw this out there...

In no particular order

1. Jimi Hendrix (okay, he is first, rest are NOT in order)
2. Jeff Beck
3. Stevie Ray Vaughn
4. Pete Townshend
5. Chuck Berry
A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. Do you think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a fuckin' cross? It's kind of like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on.

I like guitar music, but I've never gone wow at a widdley-widdley-weeeeee guitar solo on a record. Which I guess is why I like EC's music - scant solos. I'm gonna choose guitarists I saw live, coz then i did go wow:

Bernard Butler
Ron Sexsmith
Jonny Greenwood
Richard Lloyd & Tom Verlaine
Pete Townshend

I saw Robert Fripp do an instore performance for an hour one day, which was pretty swell...

Like DrJ, I've never been one for the big guitar solo -- though I've grown to love Jimi Hendrix -- and even Prince in his faux Jimi stage. Still, every once in a while something strikes me...

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Brinsley Shwarz
3. Roddy Frame
4. Richard Thompson
5. Vernon Reid

Oh, and Daniel Lanois deserves mention. I've only seen him play once, on TV, but his style was mindboggleingly revolutionary. It was mesmerising to watch and listen to. Like Hendrix, he approaches it not only as an instrument, but as a machine that makes sounds, and seemingly to the nth degree.

I've never had this male thing for serious, fuck you macho guitar playing. I've always been a melody man myself. Hendrix, Clapton and the like were clearly amazingly talented - but they always left me cold.
My taste in music reflects the choices:

1. Roddy Frame (incredibly underrated)
2. Pet Townsend
2. Brian May (never liked Queen or May's hair, but credit where due and all that...)
4. Glenn Tilbrook (If you never saw Squeeze live....you missed out. Man can this boy twang)
5. Johnny Marr
6. Bernard Butler

My personal choices, not in order:

1. Jimi--no one did what he did. NO ONE. And no one ever will.
2. Vernon Reid--gets a bit crazy, but a very imaginative musician.
3. My dad--Not a professional musician now, but he would silly songs for my older sister and me and tell us stories with his guitar before bed. The best.
4. BB King--77 years old and he still plays his ass off.
5. Eddie Hazel--if you know who I'm talking about, then you know I'm right.
If there's one thing you can say about mankind--there's nothing kind about man

So like Candy,

I humbly acknowledge your choices as mostly superior to mine. That I left out Eddie Hazel and Vernon Reid is to my shame.

I need a top 10 list; top 5 is too hard.

1. Charlie Hunter
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Chuck Berry
4. Eddie Hazel
5. Django Reinhart
6. Vernon Reid
7. BB King
8. Prince
9. Johnny Greenwood
10. Pete Townshend

Goody -

Kessel is a nice choice. I especially like his stuff with Stephane Grappelli. Did you know that Kessel produced and played guitar on the early Ricky Nelson recordings - before the great James Burton (another guy that should be in the guitar pantheon - sorry El Vez).
