I Don't Understand

Post by El Vez »

First, I should thank Bluechair and Red Shoes for the inspiration to write this song. Red Shoes forwarded Bluechair a jaw-dropping student letter published in her college newspaper and Blue in turn sent it to me. It was written by a student at Red's school who was bemoaning the fact that acceptance of gays & lesbians in our society is becoming more and more rampant. It was an ugly, hateful and downright ignorant piece of writing and it has stayed with me since reading it. So, to quote a folkie singer-songwriter I knew from college, "I wrote a song about it."

I DON'T UNDERSTAND

When granddad was a young man
He didn't want to die on foreign sand
So he ate lots of bananas to flunk his fitness test
His mother's worst fears were put to rest
And granddad made out with every girl in town
While all the other neighborhood boys died face down

I don't understand
I just don't understand
I can't understand
Why these women and men have lost their minds

At the big school dance with an even bigger pompadour
My father saw what he was looking for
Took mom's breath away when she saw this man
Who stood out before her so lean and tan
And on the day granddad died
He pulled his son close to his side
And whispered, "I'm so sorry I never got to hold your baby boy"
As he closed his eyes and fell into the void

I don't understand
I just don't understand
I can't understand
Why these women and men have lost their minds

Makes me sick when I watch TV
Then read the paper and find out that they agree
The world is changing and this change is no good
There was a time we all knew where we stood
Gates have been left open too long
It's time to shut them and speak up about what's wrong
And the rain that comes to wash it away will be the sound of my voice
Saying...

I don't understand
I just don't understand
I can't understand
Why these women and men have lost their minds

El Vez, Do you have any music to go with it. I'd love to hear it if you do.

A friend of mine who is much, much more musically inclined than I am mentioned that he might see about writing a piano melody for it. I was on a pretty steady diet of Bad Love (*ahem*) and Johnny Cutler's Birthday when I wrote this, as KH noted.

Glad it wasn't Land Of Dreams.

Listening to My Country right now, I think that might be my favourite American Tune.

If you have a tune in mind and would like me to I would love to put some music to it. I can send you some of my own stuff to hear (audition) if you like. Let me know if you are interested.

Hi everyone.

Sorry, its been a while but I found my way back. I recently updated El Vez's song a bit and added some thing to the music. I sent him a copy. maybe he will be nice and post it so you can hear his song with music. I like the way it came out. It is a great lyric.

If you would like to hear some more of my stuff I have some posted at

http://myspace.com/markclay

If you go, I would love to hear anyones opinions of them.

thanks
Crash

I'll need Spooky or Blue or someone else who is more intelligent with this sort of thing to help me out but I would love to put it up for everyone to listen to. Crash really did a great job with this and made it a whole lot better through his talent. Thanks man!

Doc is on a scouting activity today with two of the boys, but I'm sure he could work out something later. :)

I was just about to pm you to say that I received your cd yesterday and I really, really like the more fleshed-out version. I like them both but I'm especially partial to the new one because you put some really nice touches on it. Thanks again, man!

Quite nice...

Hey, I had a listen, and I think it sounds very sincere.

That's something I never could do...

"...there's nothing quite like sincerity. Once you can fake that, everything else is easy." - some wag in Mauchlin

(I'm not saying that the sincerity of the music is fake. How would I know? It seems quite real to me. Nice work, Crash!)
