Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

Sam Moore's bassist and musical director, Ivan Bodley writes -

(extract)

Friends and family,

Well, it was quite an event last night. The Creative Coalition
inaugural ball with Sam Moore, Sting & Elvis Costello at the Harmon
Center for the arts in Washington, DC. It was a giant celebrity fest
on and off stage.

The entire city was in the clouds. The mood was very high. Huge
crowds, like trying to walk through mardi gras. We had to walk with
our gear a mile each way from the train station to the venue and back
in 20-degree weather. There was unbelievably tight security. The
secret service had practically strip-searched us before we found out
we were at the wrong venue. Doh! (Cue sudden bandleader guilt pangs
here!)

With Sting we performed the duet he recorded with Sam, "None of us Are
Free," which also featured Grammy winner Brenda Russell on backing
vocals with us. (She wrote the song!) Then we did Sting's "Brand New
Day," and "Message in a Bottle" with Sting, and also "Every Breath You
Take" as a duet with Sam and Sting. I wrote horn charts for "Every
Breath," which Sting dug (There were no horns on the original! I
might have been going out on a limb there...). And our stellar horn
section arranged on-the-spot parts for "Brand New Day" and "Message in
a Bottle." As Paris Hilton would say: "hot." A personal side note: at
the first gig I EVER played in my life at my high school talent show,
we played "Message in a Bottle...."

Elvis Costello famously covered Sam (Moore) & Dave on his 1980 LP "Get
Happy!" with the song "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down." We did the
song first in Sam's style as a 12/8 ballad, on which Elvis joined us
in a duet with Sam. Then we cranked up the whopee machine for Elvis'
uptempo punk version of the same tune, which I also wrote horn parts
for that hadn't previously existed. It rocked.

Sting and Elvis re-joined Sam for "Soul Man," "Dance to the Music,"
and "You Are So Beautiful to Me." Musically it was such an incredible
night.

Three of my all-time musical heroes were onstage all at once. It was
a career high point for me for sure. I should have had to buy a
ticket to that show! Forget about being able to play on it and lead
the band through it all. Of course, the $5000 (minimum) ticket price
to the gala may have prevented me from actually being able to attend.
So I'm glad they let me play bass instead...

Your pal,
Ivan

And now Diana plays at White House to honour Stevie Wonder - presumably EC was in attendance; only a matter of time of time before he starts lunching with the Obamas...

As some of us with waste-of-time Classics degrees/post-grad. Classics-waste oojahmaflips pointed out a while ago elsewhere (actually became a question in UK 'University Challenge' final this week):

Obama litterarily reversed = Amabo (vile vicious Roman for 'I shall love' ...).
