Misheard Lyrics

Post by pip_52 »

I think we've talked about this before, but it might have been 2 boards back, cause I dont really remember it . . .

Anyways, I was wondering what songs you've misheard a lyric in and maybe didnt know the correct lyric for years and years.

Simple though the lyric was, I didnt know EC was singing "simple though love is" in I Cant Stand Up For Falling Down until an embarassingly short time ago. Instead, I always heard it as "superbowl lovers."

I always wondered what that meant . . .

Pip, I thought it was Superbowl lovers as well. It's ok :P
It nearly took a mircacle to get you to stay
It only took my little finger to blow you away.

Worrying about those sunset sequences...

And why, at the end of The Beat, does E keep repeating "Chesapeake"

I always thought that Elvis was singing "Never go further than far to far" in Living in Paradise.

I was disappointed to find out that it is "never go further than floor to floor."

"All the boys are straight laced and the girls are frigid
The talk is two-faced and the rules are rigid 'cause it's strict time"

I had thought at one point in time he said "the cock is two-faced"! jesus.....

These are all from TRUST.

"Or wind up with a fat man in the Hammersmith Odeon" ("Or wind up with a fight fan in the Hammersmith Hotel")

"I like your sons
And I like your daughters"
(They hire out your sons
And hire out your daughters")

"He needs a lot, the ass needs the turkey" ("He needs her like the axe need the turkey") and "You took him to be trouble" ("You took him to be true")

Oh, and:
"Now I know that you are King Horse
Built with tenderness and brute force"
("Now I know that you're all King Horse
Between tenderness and brute force")

I'm not reading the lyrics any more. I only end up disappointed.

My own personal "wash your ears out" mishearing moment was when I went to one of the Confederates shows at the Royal Albert Hall and EC did a solo spot. He decided to play a new song called (according to my ears anyway) "Any Cane Sugar". It took two years for Spike to come out before I realised what he was on about...

In case any of you have pity in that the Albert Hall is a big place, I was actually in the front row right in front of Elvis....

I thought it was "far too far" too . . .

And I liked it better that way :(

Well, since in what I assume is a bit of punk-era "listen to the songs, don't read 'em" aesthetic, EC issued NO lyrics sheets until Imperial Bedroom (and, on the original version, that was in the form of a single, almost unreadable, block paragraph printed on the inner sleeve), so there must have been thousands....Just can't remember any!

I always thought it was..

"There was a chip on Charlie
He didn't crack a smile"

instead of "checkpoint charlie"...it kinda still makes sense.

Completely off topic....I was listening to Spike last night...what is the line in This Town..

"Something about the moody doomed love of
the Fish-Finger King"

about? Anyone care to enlighten me? :?

What?

Post by A rope leash »

I always thought it was "the looney-tune love of the fish-finger king".

And "far to a flaw".

It's a line from the song that Charlie Sedarka sings, and it doesn't have to make sense on its own. It could be that Charlie's song makes no sense, which the preceding line implies, or maybe it does make sense but is misqouted here, which the "something about" allows for:

It was a song with a topical verse which I'm afraid he then proceeded to sing
Something about the moody doomed love of the Fish-Finger King
"But it's a dangerous game that comedy plays
Sometimes it tells you the truth
Sometimes it delays it"

Yeah, I got that bit...just wondered if "fish finger king" might have been some real topical reference at the time?

Oh my goodness, there's such a long list here...the first few that come to mind:

"Capital punishment"
-was-
"Got the dope for the schmoe"

"Between tenderness and brute force"
-was-
"Nipped with tenderness and crude farce"

"With an artificial limp wrist"
-was-
"Putting on a vigilant dress"

Thanks. The line makes me think of a dress you'd have to be vigilant to wear, like a dress that laces up the back and is in constant danger of coming undone...I guess that would be kind of hot.

"I'm not a junk food junkie" ("I'm not a telephone junkie")

Something about the moody doomed love of the Fish-Finger King

Noone got an inkling what he's on about then?

I'll just assume he's talking about the self-destructive oedipal love affairs that plagued Captain Birdseye as a courting youth!

Here's my theory.....weird though it may be....

Birdseye (frozen food chain) claim to be the Fish Finger Kings - they have used this in their advertising. Charley Sedaka has a grey beard and an expanding waistline - he looks like Captain Birdseye. Simple.
Later he feeds off a dead monkeys hand and has a stare like Persian cat while eating stripping puppets on a liquid stick, pulling chewing gum out of his ears, sitting on a cloud at the North Pole and chucking gollywogs under the chin.

Spike eh? - he's not compared to Dylan for nothing - very strange Elvis indeed. :?
"But they can't hold a candle to the reciprical war crimes which have plagued our policy of foriegn affairs."
