Thanks, gang. It's good to be back. I only hope that EC's scheduled September release for his new album doesn't delay the reissues even further, like CRUEL SMILE did last time.

norman brain wrote:I wonder if the UK reissues are really coming out in July? In America, RHINO has pushed them back to September. I would like to think that RHINO has better business sense than to lose sales to imports two months early. As avid as EC collectors are, we will not wait. I'll be importing them ASAP to hear those new bonuses, not to mention the bound-to-be-glorious Bill Inglot remastering of the immortal GET HAPPY!!
Great to have you back, Norman. The previous batch of re-issues did come out this side of the water earlier, so I can't see why they'll change the July dates. Over here they'll be treated as more of standard re-issue, i.e. very low key, while they'll probably be given more of a push in the States where EC's profile is higher. I see the Neil Young re-issues have been bumped to mid-July, the old credit card is going to take quite a hammering.

Just as well we're re-mortgaging the house. And there are still at least 4 reissues I haven't got round to yet... I don't think I could handle these three (all of which will be immediate compulsory purchases) coming out in the same month as North and A Reality, so good job we'll have them here sooner. Be still my quaking heart...

According to JE's site the re-issues are out on 28/07/2003 in the UK.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, and you can see the tracklistings on http://www.playserver2.com/play247.asp?page=front&r=CD (then search for 'costello' and all three are there).

And they will be delivered for £11 a throw. Not bad, eh? Play are good and reliable, highly recommended.

The tracklistings look almost unbearably exciting. 50 songs on Get Happy!!!!!! Can't fail to with that in prospect. Generally a nice mix of demos, obscurities and live stuff, and even Stand Down Margaret from a BBC session (which reminds me The [English] Beat are playing an open-air freebie in Cambridge this Friday, I bet they sing Stand Down Tony!).

19 days. I just can't wait.

Thanks for the track listings, Martin. I think they've grown since the last time I saw them (especially GH!!) I can't wait to get a good copy of the early "High Fidelity." I'm betting it's the slow arrangement. If so, we're all in for a treat.

I'm also interested in hearing the studio Mersey-version of "Everyday I Write the Book." That's the way I first heard it live, and my favorite arrangement. I thought the PUNCH THE CLOCK version was too busy.

Pete Thomas said they way they play it live now is the way it was originally, straighter, Beatlesier/Mersey-Beatier. The tricksy rhythm bits were a Langer/Winstanley addition. Personally I've always reall liked them, but can't wait to hear the originals. This is the big excitement for me with PTC, to gauge how much the sheer quality of song comes from the demos. Also, to hear it properly on CD, not on crappy old tape (not to mention Hoover Factory, et al).

How many of the bonus songs are unknown to you hardcore specialists? there are lots I haven't heard, some of which have familiar titles, and some I've never heard of, e.g. Weeper's Dream. Would be great to know if any of these are genuine unknowns.

Otis

Weeper's Dream is an instrumental and one of the first tunes EC wrote. The version I have is on the earlier re-issue of Trust and is a demo.
Quite a pleasant little guitar tune, but unlikely to make your (or anyopne elses) all time top ten.

Hey, Otis, what's up? I can't wait until Sept., so I'm ordering the UK editions as well. Thanks for the info!

"Weeper's Dream" is a guitar instrumental by EC alone (not bad, but not the most memorable track ever).

The only new title to me is "Seven O'Clock."

You don't own TRUST!!!!!?????????

My god. You are one lucky SOB LTZ.

I played it on my way to London today. It is so fantastic and by far his most underrated record. Clubland, You'll never..., Watch your Step (love it), New lace Sleeves, Different Finger, Shot with his Own Gun, Big Sister's Clothes....

The bonus tracks are also damn fine. I adore his version of 'Gloomy Sunday'.......so atmospheric.

TRUST IS BRILLIANT!!!!!

I've never owned Trust, haven't heard it in 20 years+, and have been saving myself for this moment. For some reason I just never got hold of it. A friend had it when it came out, and for some reason I didn't bother.

I just can't wait.

Good question.

I wonder if there'll be some sort of "mopping up" disc(s) - like Plugging the Gaps.

I have no desire to buy certain albums for just one track so this would be very much welcome although there would (I suspect) be copyright problems.

The thing about TAKING LIBERTIES is that we are getting all those tracks tacked onto the bonus discs of the albums or sessions they were originally intended for, but wound up as B-sides or outtakes.

Like most of you, I grew up looking at TL as an album itself. It's funny, for unrelated B-sides, it hangs together great!

Early in this reissue program, RHINO spoke of a super-expanded TAKING LIBERTIES at the end of the program. I hope this still happens, but I'm very curious as to what it would contain. I think by then we'll have not only all those tracks, but those from OUT OF OUR IDIOT as well.

Oh well, bring it on...there's always at least one track that's new to my ears. Elvis is certainly a marketing genius, as I have bought the catalogue several times over on vinyl (from different countries for cover variations, etc.) and now on CD for the third time.

Only for you, Elvis, only for you.
