Atlantic City

Jeff tells listserv -

What a fantastic show! We got a special treat about half way into the
show
when David Hidalgo showed up a day early. Elvis had seemed to be in a
good mood all
night but when David came out the band was just on fire. The first
song
they did was
Uncomplicated. We also got such gems as A Matter of Time with Elvis and
David
trading vocals and American without Tears with David on accordian.
David also sang
Mas y Mas which featured some incredible guitar and the band was just
ripping it up.
You people who are going to see the Pick-Ups should have an incredible
time.

Just back from the trip to Atlantic City. Great Show

Here's the setlist:

1. Welcome to the Working Week
2. Radio Radio
3. Clown Strike
4. You Belong to Me
5. Needle Time
6. The Delivery Man
7. Blame it On Cain
8. Either Side of the Same Town
9. Chelsea
10. Clubland (w/ I’m Feel Pretty)
11. Nothing cling Like Ivy
12. When I Was Cruel 2
13. Watching the Detectives

At that point, Elvis mentions the debut of the new band tonight, the Pick-ups. This is because ‘Mr. Nieve is off to strange lands to do strange things for the next week’. Enter David Hidalgo

14. Uncomplicated
15. Alison / Suspicious Minds
16. Monkey To Man
17. Country Darkness
18. Bedlam
19. Just a Matter of Time (w/Elvis and David sharing vocals)
20. American Without Tears (Hidalgo on accordion)
21. The Monkey (Pete started Mystery Dance and Elvis stopped him).
22. Mystery Dance
23. Why Don’t You Love Me
24. Mas Y Mas (Hidalgo on lead vocals)
25. Pump it up
26. Heart of the City
27. Peace Love & Understanding
28. The Scarlet Tide (Elvis waited for the crowd, or at least one arse to shut up before singing the 2nd verse).

Over all, just two hours. The crowd was very good, at least from where I was sitting, and the sound was wonderful.

Was very pleased with the change in the set list, but I am sure David Hidalgo presence has something to do with it. The band was great, with the best versions of Clown Strike, Needle Time and Clubland I have heard on this tour so far. And once David Hidalgo entered, the band really kicked it up a notch. I had never heard Mas Y Mas before, but this was incredible. Also really enjoyed American Without Tears, very rare performance.

I also thought Sondre Lerche was very good. One of the better opening acts I have seen. I will have to get some of his music.
Why are we racing to be so old?

I am hoping for a great show tonight in Baltimore.

Hope it is tonight too. I was getting worried with some of the prior reviews. Maybe adding DH has gotten them back on track.

Spent the weekend in Atlantic City to see the show. We had a great time. I was wearing my Brutal Youth t-shirt which prompted some exchanges from some of the other Elvis fans there for the show.

What can I say? I love EC and the band, so obviously I enjoyed the show. But it wasn't one of the better shows of Elvis' that I've seen.
I agree, the band was incredible and so was David Hidalgo. (Mas Y Mas was great!) It was really cool to have a chance to preview the Pick Ups.....those shows will really crank.
Elvis really has become quite the guitarist! He was incredible. He looked GREAT (looks like he lost some weight) and was in a fine mood, although he really didn't say a whole lot. He seemed to be enjoying himself though.
(AH! They didn't play Kinder Murder!! I wanted to hear that so badly.)

I'll tell ya though, the crowd sucked. They really did. It bummed me out. I kinda think it was bumming E out too. There was so much "milling about" during the entire show. People, LOTS of people, just constantly up and down getting drinks and drinks and more drinks. It was a very strange crowd. Toward the end, it felt like EC couldn't wait to get out of there. People yelling out during the Scarlet Tide when EC was attempting to sing off mike. Could barely hear him at all.
I had a severe post show let-down.

But I got a cool t-shirt and a fancy, shmancy program and a deluxe Delivery Man disc w/the extra song (She's Pulling Out the Pin) and the Clarksdale Session songs w/a DVD included. Haven't opened it yet though.
I'm not angry anymore....

He did play it last night in Baltimore and it was a highlight. Great show although I was stuck on the far side up high so got the bass blast. EC vocals were strong and enjoyed DH although not having SN did hurt some of the classics. The crowd was lively and EC appeared to enjoy himself. I will let the others fill in the details on the official thread but very similar set to AC.

REVIEW

Elvis is sheriff in this casino town

Published in the Asbury Park Press 04/26/05
By MICHAEL SYPNIEWSKI
STAFF WRITER

When Chris McKelvey, 42, Pennsauken, a security guard working Elvis Costello's Saturday concert at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, noticed the singer/songwriter/guitarist wearing a cowboy hat and a sheriff's badge while eating backstage with other Borgata employees, it was a prelude of his authority performing at the Atlantic City venue.

Costello entered the stage with the cowboy hat in hand — but minus the badge and with The Imposters as his posse.

Fans in the Borgata's sold-out, 3,700-seat Event Center did not know what the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer would play from his vast repertoire.

"He's still unique and fresh today," said Eric Wiener, 45, Monmouth Beach, who last saw Costello in 1979. "I want to hear the new stuff, but I hope he does "Watching The Detectives.' "

Wiener got his wish along with 27 other songs, ranging from the opening number, "Welcome to the Working Week," (from "My Aim Is True," Costello's debut album) and ending with "The Scarlet Tide" (from "The Delivery Man," his latest).

Costello's spirited guitar playing was most apparent when he walked away from the microphone in the middle of songs, especially on "Needle Time" and "Clubland." Bassist Davey Faragher not only kept in time with his rhythm partner, drummer Pete Thomas, but also provided indispensable background vocals during "Alison," "Nothing Clings Like Ivy" and "Blame It on Cain." Keyboardist Steve Nieve moved nonstop, standing in a hunched-over position working different keyboards, as well as using the theremin on "Bedlam" and a melodica on "The Scarlet Tide."

A real treat for the last half of the concert was Los Lobos member David Hidalgo, who played the accordion during "American Without Tears," accompanied the band on guitar, sang lead on "Mas Y Mas" and shared vocals on "Matter of Time," a Los Lobos song Costello recorded for the group's album "The Ride." Hidalgo felt right at home with "Uncomplicated" — he covered this Costello tune on a Los Lobos EP titled "Ride This."

Fans were not cheated during the two hour, nonencore concert, but likely would have stayed for more if the house lights did not come up at 11 p.m.
