Elvis's newest songs - more detail please!!

Post by Danny »

Hi all - anyone here got to know the new songs (Nothing Clings Like Ivy, Monkey To Man, Country Darkness etc etc...) through concert recordings or the like?

I'm dying to hear a rundown on 'em! Anyone care to try and capture the sound of them in words or compare them to other songs?

Cheers xxx

Well, I probably seem a little biased, but all the new songs sound great to me. I was fortunate enough to be standing right in front of Elvis for the early show at the Hi-Tone in Memphis last month when he sang them. Delivery Man is my favorite of the new songs. They have a great sound and the Imposters are in marvelous form.

I am anxiously awaiting the new album as well.

I think "Country Darkness" is my favourite. It reminds me of "Motel Matches" quite a bit. Very soulful, piano driven. At least the version at the Nieve/Costello show.
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Cool. What's the gist of the lyric for Country Darkness? And what does the Delivery Man actually sound like? Is that the one that goes 'I dreamed of my last lover tonight. I keep my lipstick twisted tight etc...'?

Delivery Man has the lyrics:

"In a certain light, you look like Elvis/In a certain way you seem like Jesus"

Cool song. Very cool.

That's 'I Dreamed Of My Old Lover Last Night'. EC & SN were playing this on the '99 tour. I have it on a tape from a BBC recording at Newcastle from then.

I dreamed of my old lover last night
I wonder if I spoke out loud
And if by chance my lover overheard
He put my face back in the crowd

His eyes were clear and gentle then
He kissed the troubles from my brow
I long to fall to sleep again
And I wonder how he would look now

Would our kids grow sullen or grow strong?
Would their limbs bronze in solitude and sun?
I like the way it feels but then
I rarely dream of anyone
I the songs of shame and the tales of dread
Where they seal the lovers' lips with lead
And all the vines wind through their eyes

Oh but no one knows this passion now
Oh no one knows this passion now
So I keep this fancy to myself
I keep my lipstick twisted tight
I long to fall to sleep again
I dreamed of my old lover last night
I long to fall to sleep again
'Cause I dreamed of my old lover last night
There's more to life than books, you know, but not much more

Nice transcription, Otis. That was my favorite of the new songs on the '99 tour. He always introduced "I Dreamed of My Old Lover Last Night" as part of the Delivery Man project. Of course, that was nearly six years ago, so who knows how many changes may have occurred?

It seems there were others (maybe "Soul for Hire"?) that were included as part of the project. My memory may be failing on this, but I don't recall an actual song called "The Delivery Man" performed until these recent shows.

Have to say I've listened to the new songs over and over again during my jaunt...Needle Time is awesome, The Deliveryman will be a classic IMHO, Nothing clings like Ivy and County Darkness too are great. Cannae wait for the new album....I also hope it has the EC version of Scarlet Tide on it. That would be ace.

Any chance of other stuff he played in '99 popping up, you think?
Especially hoping for Burnt sugar (Is So Bitter) and Suspect My Tears, which I think beats most of what he's released since then.

All the new tunes are exactly that, tunes and good ones at that. The arrangements are pretty good as well, September can't come too soon.
Good to see LTZ back on board.

"Abel was able, so Vivian said
Her shoulders flexed forward
Her lips in a purse
There would be a promise"

Err...beg to differ, but those aren't the lyrics...even though they are posted on a website..the lyrics sung at Masey Hall, Toronto were;

"Abel was able" so Vivian said,
her shoulders flung forward and lips in her purse,
she talks like the beauty that she never was,
and of the fabulous wild nights that she never has.

In a certain light - he looked like Elvis,
In a certain way - he feels like Jesus,
Everyone dreams of him just as they can,
But he's only the humble deliveryman.

Geraldine blushes as she brushes away,
the cigarette ashses that Vivian scatters,
stares out of the window at the things that she says,
while the gossip within her competes with the widow.

Ever since he's gone - she feels like cryin' all the time,
She knows for sure - Vivian is lying,
But she has a daughter to raise as she can,
And she just cannot trust that deliveryman.

Ivy puts down the ghost story she's reading,
looks up at that face on the wall,
thinking about how her father lay bleeding,
shot in the back 'cos orders were misleading,
how a flag and a medal don't have any meaning.

On the 5th of July as they tore down the fair,
and he'd seen all the local girls who were worth kissing,
with the smell of the gunpowder still in the air,
they noticed that Abel and Ivy were missing.

In a certain light he looked like Elvis,
In a certain way he seems like Jesus,
Now can't you be kind to me,
like you were meant to be?
When they let me out I am a brand new identity.
Now everyone dreams of me just as they can,
I want to be your deliveryman.

In a certain way - he looked like Elvis,
In a certain way - he felt like Jesus,
(repeat diminuendo)

I got those lyrics from:

In some live performances those are the words.

Ok, here's a transcript of lyrics from Massey Hall. I had trouble with three lines in Needle Time, so it's not complete...anyone else got any clues to the 'suitcase full of wisdom teeth to expense' ? I don't think these have been posted yet..apologies if they have.

Country Darkness

This tattered document,
a mystery you can solve,
some burned-out filament,
flies buzzing around a bulb.

Country darkness.

He thought of travelling,
heard an approcahing train,
drowned out his desperate pulse,
a song with no refrain.

Country darkenss.

She daydreams of forbiddens sins,
there must be something more,
the prison she lives in,
the one with the open door.

A veil that's covering,
a glistening and cruel blade,
suffer little children,
repent unfathiful maid.

Country darkness.
Country darkness.
Country darkness.

She daydreams of forbidden sins,
there must be something more.
The prison she lives in,
the one with the open door.

A veil that's covering,
a glistening and cruel blade,
suffer little children.
repent unfathiful maid.

Country darkness.
Country darkness.
Country darkness.

From Monkey to Man

A long time ago a wild point of view,
was broadcast by Mr Bartholomew,
now the world is full of sorrow and pain,
it's time for us to speak up again.

You're slack and sorry, such an arrogant brute,
the only purpose you serve is to bring us our food,
sat here staring at your pomp and pout,
outside the bars they're used to keeping to you out.

Taking everything you wanted,
broke it up, and plundered it and hunted,
and before you say that you went into the credit,
it's been headed this way since the world began,
since a vicious creature made the jump from monkey to man.

Every time man struggles and fails,
he makes up some kind of fairytales,
after all of the misery that he has caused,
he denies he descended from the dinosaurs.

Taking everything that he wanted,
he broke it up, and plundered it and hunted,
long before you say that he went into the credit,
it's been headed this way since the world began,
since a vicious creature made the jump from monkey to man.

Monkey to man!

Big and useless as man has become,
with his crying statues and his flying bomb,
goes round acting like the chosen one,
'scuse me if we treat him like our idiot cousin.

Taking everything that he wanted,
he broke it up, and plundered it and hunted,
long before you say that he went into the credit,
it's been headed this way since the world began,
when a vicious creature made the jump from monkey to man.

Monkey to man.
Monkey to man.
Monkey to man.
(repeat)

Nothing clings like Ivy

Nothing clings like Ivy,
frightened by the dark,
though she cuts deep,
it never leaves a mark.

Noone quite like Ivy,
ever gets it straight,
what she believes,
she won't negotiate.

All the words of tenderness,
that never quite got through.
She says you know that young girls arm,
from my contempt for you.

Outside in the hollow,
she may dare herself,
for there may be,
a serpent in the grass.

Nothing clings like Ivy,
trying to scare herself,
and it may strike,
or wait for her to pass.

All the words of tenderness,
she never possessed.
What's the use of promises,
I had my fingers crossed.

Nothing clings like Ivy,
frightened by the dark,
though she cuts deep,
it never leaves a mark.

Needle time

I wish that I didn't hate you,
least not as much as I do,
and squander all my contempt for a little nothing like you.
Liars like you are ten-a-penny,
women would slap you if you knew any.

Sometimes I feel just like committing a crime,
I got this suitcase of phoney wisdom to dispense, :D
These twentyseven or so years, you'd think I'd put down some sense,
but now they want me fingerprinted like I was smuggling drugs,
and the girl of ...? deals with the most convenient thugs.
Sometimes I feel just like committing a crime,
it's needle time.
It's needle time.

Im trying hard not to despise you,
with a passion that's hard to extinguish,
or maybe I really love you,
although it's hard to distinguish.
I wish I could be more like a saintness,
forgiving those who trespass against us
Sometimes I feel just like committing a crime,
I started talking nonsense,
just like I did to begin with,
around the time I tied up those sour english?
Sometimes I feel just like committing a crime,
it's needle time.
It's needle time.
It's needle time.
It's needle time.

Does anyone think Needle Time is another anti-Bruce song???

Monkey to man.
Monkey to man.
Monkey to man.
(repeat)

One thing I remember from the Chicago show, was that this ending sounded EXACTLY like the ending to Miracle Man, but I liked Miracle Man's better.

Nothing cleans like ivory.

Which ones will make the final cut on the new album? I'm guessing, just because of repeated play, that...

Needle Time
Monkey to Man
The Delivery Man
Nothing clings like ivy
Country Darkness

...will be in there.

Either Side of the Same Town doesn't have the same sound as the others, it sounds to me more like a song from the North period. I'd love to see The Scarlet Tide on there, but somehow doubt it will be (maybe as a free downloadable track :? ).

Surely Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter will be in there cos of the Carole King thing... but what about;

Suspect My Tears
The Judgement
Unwanted Number
Heart Shape Bruise
The Name of This Thing is Not Love
Button My Lip
Bedlam
She's Pulling Out the Pin
There's a Story In Your Voice
In Another Room
I'll Watch Out For You

Exciting times await us o minions of Costellodom!
