Some great 80s artists/albums mentioned earlier in this discussion!

I hope there are people that can look beyond the top 40 of the 80s & see the creativity & talent that would never have found an outlet in the corporate owned 90s.

Lots of those above plus;

Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth
The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms (or anything they did)
Grandmaster Flash/Public Enemy & so many other others, before rap degenerated into an endless booty call.
The Go-Betweens
Husker Du
Billy Bragg
Gang Of Four

Point taken, noiseradio.

I'm not big on nu-metal or its precursors, so I won't pretend to know every last detail. For some reason I've never gotten around to hearing Helmet, so I couldn't factor them in.

Good on you, Richard, and a great selection. Always lovelly to know there are other people who still love the Young Marble Giants! And agree 100% with your points about the two decades.

Am I the only person here who remembers Creem magazine?
Back in the 80's, out of Ann Arbor Michigan, the only true rock magazine (Articles about the Ramones, "Deborah Harry Plucks Her Legs!",
Top 10 reasons not to eat junk food ("Teeth like Keith Richards"), Top 10 reasons to eat junk food ("Ladies like Anita Pallenberg!!") "Why is Mick Jagger so thin? Because he gave up food for Lent--5 years ago!!"

"I Ran", Flock of Seagulls...one of the great first videos of all time!!!
The Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star" (how prophetic!) Missing Persons "What Are Words For?"...God, I adored MTV when it first hit the airwaves, when it really seemed to be about music , not hype.

Sorry, had a bad case of italicism there for a few moments...

I agree with the "early MTV" years (1981-84, approximately). One great '80's band, IMHO, is the Smithereens. "Especially For You" rocks!!

I think I would choose Get Happy over Imperial bedroom..

But there are so many great 80s albums that might be better than imperial bedroom...

The River
Argy Bargy
Nebraska
Joshua Tree
Bleach
Green

just to name a few...

sinead o' conner--the lion and the cobra
sade--promise
peter gabriel--so
dire straits--making movies

and all kinds of stuff you can't mention on here: building the perfect beast, now and zen, back in black, signals, wild planet

the 80's was full of great and varied stuff, but nothin beats IB.
