Re: The 100 most beautiful places in the world
In the spirit of competition, I had to count them up. Twelve. Not great, although I would like to point out that you can see my hometown Jersey City from the Statue of Liberty. In fact, quiet as it's kept, the Statue of Liberty is actually in Jersey City. I think that should count for extra points.

With my wisdom teeth coming out later this week Make sure you get the extracted incisors ; I have mine and keep meaning to get them put on a chain or something. I kept my wisdom tooth, too! I also want to put it on a chain, but I need to get it gilded first. Then I'll look like a badass mofo.

You know, Queen Latifah used to live in Jersey City. Just thought I'd mention it.

Re: books, books, books
Seriously, 1920's/30's Wodehouse is some of the most perfect writing ever, Summer Lightning and The Luck of the Bodkins being especially good. Would it be too, too obnoxious of me to say that a creative writing professor once said that a story of mine reminded him of Wodehouse? Yes, probably, but I...

Great cover. Better movie. I luuuurve Army of Shadows . It's about the Resistance, but made like a film noir. I could see it again, as it just struck me that I don't really remember anything else about the movie. Except in the beginning where the prison guard is thinking about someone and as things...

I'm doing a translation that contains a word that can either be translated as "friend" or "little turd." It's impossible to tell from the context which is intended! We don't have any Belgians in the house, do we?

Blue, I put Ghost Town in my queue after Salon said it was one of the ten best films of the year. I remember the trailer making me laugh. This weekend we watched Waitress (entertaining, but kind of a mess—the tone was all over the place, there was too much going on to wrap up neatly, and you can't s...

I don't know if it's different in the film, but I read The Reader a few months ago, and the person on trial is not innocent. Is it different? I saw Milk a few weeks ago, which was excellent. I highly recommend it. Sean Penn plays someone happy! For once! On DVD, the other day (or was it only yesterd...

Re: All I want for <insert appropriate seasonal holiday here> is
Red, I want a kitten for Xmas! But they're not allowed in our building. Sigh. All I really wanted was the Cute Overload Page-a-Day Calendar, which I got, thanks to some spectacularly unsubtle early-December hinting. Also some fancy booze--my sister sent me a $50 bill taped to a picture of Glenlivet,...

Re: New Year's Eve - Plans and Resolutions
What I did on my mini-vacation: Xmas Eve: Had my parents over for dinner, which was a first (both hosting a holiday and hosting my parents, I mean). Served French onion soup, purple potato pancakes and roasted Brussels sprouts with walnuts and balsamic vinegar. Xmas Day: Went to my boyfriend's siste...

hell i could drive a combine when i was 12. he can see over the steering wheel can't he? I take both pride and shame in the fact that I turn 30 in exactly three months and I still don't have a license. I could blame it on where I grew up, but everyone else around here managed to get one! I've been ...

Still working on the list, though they changed it on me, so I'm down about a dozen from where I was before... reading now: The Human Stain - Philip Roth. So good! Maybe I should try Portnoy's Complaint again... just read: The Piano Teacher - Elfriede Jelinek. So disturbing! Maybe I should avoid the ...

I read "When We Were Orphans" a few weeks ago, and thought it was kind of hilarious. It's got that same kind of passivity, even though the narrator actually goes out and does a lot of stuff. Has anyone else read it? [minor spoiler follows]: My favorite thing is that the narrator is suppose...

I know this kind of defeats the point of humane traps, but you could use humane traps and then drown the mice in a bucket. I wouldn't do it, but it is another idea.
Halloween
What are folks doing/dressing as for Halloween? I'll be throwing a party on Friday and attending one on Saturday, but my costume is still up in the air. The boyf and I were thinking of a Dr. Frankenstein/Frankenstein's monster combo, but I was looking for clothes at http://www.gentlemansemporium.com...

I just finished Lucky Jim (list) and really enjoyed it. I have just one nagging questions about the end, though--let me know if you've read it, and I'll ask you privately (so as not to spoil anything for pophead).
