Re: The wonder of the game!

Well then this one will be even harder to view- Good game Big Papi and the rest of the men as well. David should have had a grand slam earlier in the game-just missed it: http://oak.ctx.ly/r/fj1a On to game two tonight and hopefully another Sox victory. Yeah, the game was out of hand at that point ...

2004, my bad.

Cards win tonight, lose tomorrow, and then take all 3 here in St. Louis. Cards in 5.

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

As collaborative records go, I would rate WUG a distant 4th place to Painted From Memory, River in Reverse, and even Juliet Letters. The problem with WUG is that too many of the tracks feel like the collaboration was over-influenced by the other party. And it seems like it was more of a 50-50 affair...

Re: Best Country Songs by Elvis Costello?

What was the one he did recently with the Time Jumpers and Vince Gill in that Nashville bar? And any song with Charlie Haden. And the song with Nick Lowe and Ry Cooder, My Baby's Gone, at the Austin Delone Housing project concert. Thats MY favorite by far . Can't find the youtube clip of that. Can a...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

I've given it a couple spins and I wish I hadn't read the rave reviews. I don't see what all the fuss is about. Unfortunately, other than a couple of tracks like If I Could Believe, Tripwire, and Sugar Doesn't Work . . . this album for me just doesn't work. Sounds like Elvis sings the Fugees, very p...

Re: EC Live at Apple's iPhone event

This leaves me a little 'queasy'. EC, in essence, shilling for a corporate giant that is far from stellar in its ethical and business practices on the eve of the release of his latest record which, on the strength of the initial single released, "Walk Us Up Town", expresses a moral and so...

No talent here, but younger sister Rosie Winstead has written and illustrated some children's books which are published. "Someday" written by children's author Eileen Spinelli, in which she did the illustrations only. Great little story. And then "Ruby and Bubbles" she both wrote...

Very proud of my older sister, Julie. She has become quite the photographer with her works being snatched up by the likes of Elton John, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Downey Jr, and a few others. Kind've funny because most of her subjects are my nieces and nephews.

How much of a Lowe fan do you have to be to get excited about this in a sultry July?
Bah humbug!

made my pre-order purchase on the yeproc site. Got the CD, vinyl, and Nick Lowe snow-globe coming. Was tempted by the Nick Lowe wrapping paper and greeting cards, but couldn't do it. Tawdry commercialism indeed! Really looking forward to this new Christmas album. ALL of the tracks sounded great on t...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Good grief the song is very eerie in the wake of this Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman deal. Did it strike anyone else the same way? The words immediately hit me with it, but maybe I've been dwelling too much on that whole sad tale. Even the title of the album "Wise Up Ghost", the black and...

Tenth of December by George Saunders. His fourth collection and currently #3 on the NY Times bestseller list for fiction. Imagine that a collection of stories. I have been singing this book's pleasures to anyone who will listen. It is that good. Saunders can take the most mundane of acts or situati...

Its a cool place for sure. You really get a buzz just being in there, looking up at that clock, knowing the history of all the travelers who have come through there. Thanks for posting. St. Louis Union Station also has one of those echo-arches and it is eerie. You only have to whisper and it travels...

No surprise with A-rod. Wouldn't surprise me if his slump late last year was because he went off the PED's. If you got 20 minutes to burn . . . do yourself a favor and watch this very stirring eulogy given by Bob Costas at Stan the Man's funeral this past saturday. Lots of great stories about Mickey...

RIP Stan the Man Musial. One of the all time greats, if not THE all-time great . . . . in the top 5 anyway, and the greatest player to ever wear the birds on bat forever and always. A true national hero.

Re: Graham Parker

Elvis borrowed/stole so blatantly from GP in the early days its ridiculous . . . and it IS very curious that Elvis hasn't acknowledged this in the least. Didn't really matter much after TYM, because Elvis was off in another direction and so was Graham. The Spectacle/Sunglasses thing was a hoot. GP s...

Last good 007 flick you have to go all the way back to Moonraker !!!! The one with the laser battle in space? On my list of the worst - certainly Roger Moore's low point. Well, yeah okay, 1979 special effects weren't quite there yet. :D But still way better than watching Daniel Craig call Judi Denc...

Re: Recently viewed films

Skyfall - I give it 2.5 stars. The first half of the movie started out pretty good, but then the whole castle scene and return to his home w/ Albert Finney, good lord, that was boring, cheesy, and predictable. Hand grenades and machine guns never looked so dull. Albert deserves better than that. And...

Re: national ransom two years next week

Not a big fan of NR -- its too over-wrought and not easy on the ears. It has aged better than I thought it would, and I still give it the occasional spin, but too many clunkers mixed in with too few gems. Much prefer the SP & S. Last great work of Elvis' was Delivery Man.
