Re: Recently viewed films

No, Otis, I don't understand that. I still think The Sopranos is way more emotionally compelling, and there's also a sense of humor at work there, which is somewhat lacking in the Godfather movies. It also strips away the romanticism of the Godfather to show you just how petty and ugly these crimina...

It's sad that this John Stewart is dead, but I didn't look at the title very closely, and you made my heart skip a beat. I'm extra glad that Jon Stewart is still among the living...

Re: Recently viewed films

Okay, watched "The Godfather II" and I get it now, at least more than I did. My man thought the last scene was anticlimactic, but I thought it went a long way towards explaining Michael's abrupt switcheroo--his decision to join the Marines and pledge his loyalty to an entity other than the...

Re: Recently viewed films

Pophead, I agree with your point about the pull of the family, I just wish there were some kind of intermediary scene between "That's my family, that's not me" and "Let's hide a gun in the toilet." I have actually have Godfather II from Netflix sitting on my coffee table right no...

Re: Recently viewed films

Okay, Otis and Richard, I will try to explain what put me off about The Godfather , hopefully a little articulately. Mostly I had a problem with Michael (I haven't yet seen Godfather II , so maybe he gets better). He's just a really opaque character, and his motivations seemed to be dictated by the ...

Re: Recently viewed films

I saw "No Country" and loved it. The Coen brothers definitely have a worldview... I liked the touch of, everyone who sees the chance for a little money immediately becomes an asshole (I speak of the various passers-by that Brolin and Bardem pay for help, and their friends' reactions—hope I...

Otis, to belatedly answer your question, right now I feel like I'm listening to old albums that maybe I didn't give enough of a chance to before. Other than that, I'm not seeing a huge effect on my listening patterns. Will update as circumstances develop...

I can't really speak to your experience, mood, but didn't you think it was a little ridiculous that the son wanted to race against people who didn't have superpowers? Couldn't they organize a race for superheroes? But don't forget that the "supers" were frowned upon and the Incredibles fa...

Well, Otis, a big theme in The Incredibles is how terrible it is that everyone gets a trophy-- mediocrity is celebrated, and being extraordinary is something to hide and be ashamed of. I found this take on things a little Objectivist.

The joys of buying local: for my mother's birthday, I ordered her a copy of Brother, I'm Dying (about Haiti) from her local bookstore. I asked the guy to not let her buy it (she's his biggest customer). When my dad tried to buy a copy for his sister, the owner was like, "Why are you buying this...

I really liked Ratatouille. Usually kids' movies have weird subtexts that weird me out (like all the thugs are voiced by African-American actors, or the Objectivist leanings of The Incredibles), but I had a very good time with this one. The rat horde scenes were a little gross, though.

Which leads me to global warming.Clearly GWB is not to blame. I guess we are, as a species. And that's what makes me refrain from getting too worked up about it. It's a natural result of the way we've chosen to live. I like the expansive, resource splurging way we've chosen to live (all of us, not ...

iPod nation

I just got my first iPod. I'm a little embarrassed by it, but I just joined a gym and the exercise bike is unbearably boring without music. I think I got more iPod than I can handle, really, but I couldn't justify buying an 8Gb Nano when I could have 80 for $50 more, you know? My computer, by the wa...

Just received Regina Spektor's Begin to Hope, Jens Lekman's Night Falls on Kortedala and Sufjan Stevens's Illinois thing. All new artists for me. Am breaking in the Lekman first--I really like it. It's happy and a little depressing at the same time, which is my favorite thing.

colrow, I'm sorry if I sounded harsh, but I'm deathly scared of falling ill in this country, even *with* insurance. And the sliding scale thing sounds good, but the last time I had to take advantage of it, the people at the clinic told me that living with family (I'd just gotten back from Argentina ...
